Chapter 4: The Father Who Knew Everything

The ballroom doors closed behind Arthur Mercer.

Daniel’s father.

The man who had built the Mercer empire from a single construction company into a billion-dollar corporation.

The man whose name alone made executives lower their voices.

For years, Daniel had used his father’s reputation like a shield.

But now Arthur Mercer walked into the room carrying no pride.

Only disappointment.

Beside him stood a woman holding a large black box filled with documents.

Daniel stared at his father.

“Dad?””

Arthur didn’t answer immediately.

His eyes moved across the ballroom.

The screens.

The evidence.

The bruises on my skin.

The agents standing beside his son.

Then he looked back at Daniel.

“How long?””

Daniel swallowed.

“What?””

Arthur’s voice became colder.

“How long have you been doing this?””

The room became silent.

Daniel forced a laugh.

“You’re believing her?””

Arthur looked at him like he was seeing a stranger.

“That’s your response?””

Daniel stepped closer.

“You don’t understand what she’s trying to do.””

Arthur shook his head.

“No, Daniel.””

He looked at the guests.

“I understand exactly what happened.””

A wave of whispers moved through the ballroom.

Victoria rushed toward her husband.

“Arthur, don’t do this here.””

He turned to her.

“Don’t do what?””

His voice cut through the room.

“Tell the truth?””

Victoria’s expression changed.

For the first time, she wasn’t controlling the situation.

She was losing it.

Daniel looked between them.

“You two are acting insane.””

Arthur nodded toward the woman holding the box.

“Open it.””

She placed the box on a nearby table.

Inside were stacks of documents.

Contracts.

Bank statements.

Photographs.

Emails.

Everything Daniel thought had disappeared.

The agent stepped forward.

“What are these?””

Arthur answered without looking away from his son.

“The records of what my son did behind my back.””

Daniel’s face tightened.

“You knew?””

Arthur closed his eyes for a moment.

“That’s the question I should have asked myself years ago.””

The guests watched silently.

I stood near the altar, still holding the microphone.

For months, I had wondered if anyone powerful enough would ever stand against Daniel.

I never expected it would be the man who gave him everything.

Arthur looked at me.

“Emma.””

I nodded.

“Mr. Mercer.””

His expression softened slightly.

“I owe you an apology.””

Daniel immediately interrupted.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

He stepped forward.

“No, you don’t get to do this.””

His voice rose.

“You built this company because of me. You taught me how to win.””

Arthur stared at him.

“I taught you how to build.””

A pause.

“I never taught you how to destroy.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“So that’s it?””

He pointed at me.

“You’re choosing her over your own son?””

Arthur’s face remained still.

“I’m choosing the truth over a lie.””

The words hit Daniel harder than any accusation.

Because for the first time, his father wasn’t protecting him.

Daniel looked at Victoria.

“Mom?””

She looked away.

That small movement told everyone everything.

Daniel noticed.

His confidence cracked.

“You knew too.””

Victoria didn’t answer.

“Mom.””

Her silence became the loudest answer in the room.

I watched Daniel realize something painful.

The empire he always believed would save him…

was finally abandoning him.

The agent approached Arthur.

“Mr. Mercer, we’ll need your statement.””

Arthur nodded.

“You’ll have it.””

Then he looked at Daniel.

“But before that, there’s something he needs to know.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“What?””

Arthur reached into his coat and pulled out a small envelope.

“I found this three days ago.””

Daniel stared at it.

“What is that?””

“Something your mother tried to hide.””

Victoria suddenly moved.

“Arthur, don’t.””

Everyone turned.

Arthur handed the envelope to me.

I opened it slowly.

Inside was one photograph.

One document.

And one name.

A name I recognized immediately.

My hands went cold.

Because the person who had helped Daniel hide his crimes wasn’t just someone inside his company.

May you like

It was someone I trusted.

Someone who had been standing beside me throughout the entire nightmare.
