Chapter 3: The Empire Built On Lies

Nobody moved.

For several seconds, the ballroom felt frozen in time.

Daniel stood beneath the crystal chandeliers, surrounded by hundreds of people who had once admired him.

The perfect billionaire heir.

The golden son of the Mercer family.

The man who owned everything.

Except now, everyone was looking at him differently.

I watched his confidence disappear piece by piece.

“Those documents are fake,” Daniel finally said.

His voice was louder this time.

More desperate.

He pointed at me.

“She has been planning this. She wants money.””

A few guests looked uncertain.

That was exactly what Daniel wanted.

Confusion.

Doubt.

A room full of people wondering whether the victim was actually the villain.

It was his favorite weapon.

But I had learned from him.

Always prepare for the lie before it arrives.

I turned toward the screens.

“Play file two.””

The display changed again.

This time, it showed bank transfers.

Dates.

Account numbers.

Company names.

The guests watched as millions of dollars moved through hidden accounts connected to shell companies.

A businessman in the front row stood up.

“Those accounts belong to Mercer Holdings.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Sit down.””

The man didn’t move.

“I said sit down.””

For years, people obeyed Daniel.

That was the first time I saw someone refuse.

The agent beside Daniel looked at the screen.

“Mr. Mercer, these transactions are part of the investigation.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“This is ridiculous.””

Victoria pushed through the crowd.

She looked at me with pure hatred.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””

I almost laughed.

Because that was the same sentence Daniel used every time I tried to leave.

You don’t understand.

You’re emotional.

You’re confused.

You need me.

But I finally understood something.

They didn’t think I was weak.

They thought I was controllable.

And that was their mistake.

Victoria lowered her voice.

“You had everything. A beautiful home. A future with my son.””

I stared at her.

“A cage can still look beautiful.””

Her expression tightened.

Daniel stepped closer despite the agents.

“Emma.””

The way he said my name made my stomach turn.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I remembered the first time he said it.

Before the money.

Before the control.

Before the bruises.

He had taken me to a small coffee shop during our first date.

He spilled coffee on his expensive jacket and laughed.

“I guess I’m not as perfect as everyone thinks.””

I believed him.

That was the tragedy.

I believed the version of Daniel he created.

Not the man standing in front of me.

“Why?”” he asked.

The question surprised me.

Not because he was sorry.

Because he genuinely didn’t understand.

“Why would you do this?””

I looked around the room.

At the witnesses.

At the cameras.

At everyone who had once believed his performance.

“Because you told me nobody would believe me.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“You remember that?””

“I remembered everything.””

I reached into the folder and pulled out a small flash drive.

“This contains recordings of your private meetings.””

Daniel went completely still.

Victoria’s eyes widened.

“What meetings?””

I looked at her.

“The ones where you discussed covering up his crimes.””

For the first time, Victoria looked afraid.

Not angry.

Not arrogant.

Afraid.

The agent immediately reached for the flash drive.

“Where did you get this?””

I hesitated.

Because there was one person who had helped me.

Someone Daniel trusted.

Someone nobody expected.

“I didn’t get it,” I said.

“I was given it.””

Daniel stared at me.

“Who?””

I looked toward the entrance of the ballroom.

The doors slowly opened.

A man in a dark suit stepped inside.

The entire Mercer family turned toward him.

Daniel’s face lost all color.

Because the person walking toward us was the last person he expected to see.

May you like

His own father.

And behind him was someone carrying a box filled with documents that could destroy the Mercer empire forever.
