Chapter 8: The Man Behind The Empire

I returned to the Mercer mansion before sunrise.
The place that once felt like a dream now looked like a museum of lies.
Every expensive painting.
Every piece of furniture.
Every photograph on the walls.
Everything belonged to a family that had mastered one thing.
Looking perfect.
The agents searched through rooms while I stood in the entrance hall.
Claire stayed beside me.
Neither of us spoke much.
There were too many questions.
Too many wounds.
Finally, Arthur appeared at the top of the stairs.
He looked older than he had hours earlier.
Not physically.
Something inside him had collapsed.
“Emma.””
I looked up.
“Did you know?””
He stopped.
That was all the answer I needed.
My voice became quiet.
“How long?””
Arthur walked down slowly.
“I knew Daniel was dangerous.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
He looked away.
“I knew he had problems.””
“Problems?””
I almost laughed.
“He tried to destroy my life.””
Arthur closed his eyes.
“I know.””
The words shocked me.
“You know?””
He nodded.
“I found out six months ago.””
The room became silent.
Six months.
I had spent six months trapped.
Six months collecting evidence.
Six months wondering if I was crazy.
And Arthur knew.
“Why didn’t you help me?””
His face tightened.
“Because I was afraid.””
I stared at him.
The billionaire who built an empire.
Afraid.
“Of your son?””
Arthur looked toward the window.
“Of what he would become if I turned against him.””
I stepped closer.
“Arthur, he was already that person.””
He nodded slowly.
“I know.””
His voice cracked.
“And that is something I will regret forever.””
The agent walked over holding a folder.
“Mr. Mercer, we need to discuss these.””
Arthur looked at the folder.
“I expected this.””
I frowned.
“You expected what?””
He opened the folder.
Inside were more documents.
But these weren’t Daniel’s.
They were Arthur’s.
“I prepared this before the wedding.””
I looked at him carefully.
“Why?””
“Because I knew Daniel would eventually destroy himself.””
He handed me a page.
It was a legal document.
A transfer agreement.
My eyes moved across the words.
Daniel’s inheritance.
His access to Mercer Holdings.
His control over company accounts.
All suspended.
Unless approved by Arthur.
I looked at him.
“You could have stopped him.””
Arthur nodded.
“Yes.””
“Then why wait?””
His answer was quiet.
“Because I wanted proof.””
The anger inside me returned.
“You wanted proof?””
I held up the documents.
“While I was being hurt?””
Arthur looked down.
“I was wrong.””
The honesty surprised me.
Not enough to forgive him.
But enough to listen.
“There is something else you need to know.””
He opened another file.
“This is why Daniel was desperate to marry you.””
Inside was a contract.
Not my marriage contract.
Something else.
A merger agreement.
My company’s name was written at the top.
I stared.
“He wasn’t after my shares.””
Arthur shook his head.
“No.””
His voice became serious.
“He was after your company’s technology.””
I frowned.
“My designs?””
Arthur nodded.
“Your research division created something valuable.””
I felt confused.
Something I had built.
Something Daniel pretended to support.
“He wanted to use your company to cover his financial losses.””
The pieces connected.
The money.
The marriage.
The control.
The bruises.
Everything.
Daniel didn’t want a wife.
He wanted an escape.
The agent suddenly looked toward the hallway.
“Everyone stay where you are.””
His hand moved toward his weapon.
A sound came from outside.
A car door closing.
Then another.
Arthur’s face changed.
“What?””
The agent looked at the security monitor.
A group of people stood outside the mansion.
Not police.
Not reporters.
Private security.
At the center stood a man holding a folder.
Arthur went pale.
“Impossible.””
I looked at him.
“Who is that?””
May you like
Arthur whispered:
“The man who controls the money Daniel stole.””
