Chapter 13: The Last Witness

The hospital room was nothing like the ballroom.

No crystal chandeliers.

No cameras.

No powerful people pretending everything was under control.

Just white walls, quiet machines, and Victoria Mercer sitting alone on a hospital bed.

For the first time since I met her, she looked small.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Just a woman who had finally run out of places to hide.

When I walked inside, her eyes immediately found mine.

“Emma.””

I stopped near the door.

“You wanted to see me.””

Victoria looked away.

“Yes.””

The agent remained beside me.

Arthur stood behind me.

Claire stayed near the hallway.

Nobody trusted anyone anymore.

And honestly…

I couldn’t blame them.

Victoria looked at Arthur.

“You came.””

He didn’t answer.

That silence between them carried years of secrets.

I stepped forward.

“Why did you turn yourself in?””

Victoria took a slow breath.

“Because I realized something.””

Her eyes moved to mine.

“I spent years protecting my family.””

A bitter smile appeared.

“But I was never protecting them.””

I said nothing.

She looked down at her hands.

“I was protecting the monster I helped create.””

The room became quiet.

The machine beside her continued its steady rhythm.

“I need proof,” I said.

Victoria nodded.

“I know.””

She reached toward the drawer beside her bed and pulled out a small envelope.

The agent immediately stepped forward.

“Careful.””

Victoria placed it on the table.

“I’m not trying to run.””

The agent opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

And a small memory card.

My heart tightened.

“What is this?””

Victoria looked at me.

“The truth about your father.””

Arthur closed his eyes.

He already knew.

The agent examined the documents.

“Where did you get these?””

Victoria answered:

“I collected them for years.””

“Why?””

Her expression changed.

“Because I knew one day Daniel would become worse than Richard.””

That surprised me.

“You knew?””

Victoria nodded.

“I saw the signs.””

I stared at her.

“You watched him hurt me.””

Her eyes filled with shame.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt more than another lie.

“I knew he was controlling you.””

“Then why didn’t you stop him?””

Victoria looked at Arthur.

“Because I was afraid of losing everything.””

There it was again.

Fear.

The excuse that destroyed so many lives.

I stepped closer.

“People always say they were afraid.””

Victoria looked at me.

“But fear doesn’t erase what we do.””

For the first time, I heard something real in her voice.

Regret.

She continued.

“Your father discovered Richard’s operation.””

She looked at Arthur.

“And Arthur tried to negotiate.””

Arthur lowered his head.

“I thought I could fix it.””

Victoria nodded.

“You thought you could control dangerous people.””

She looked back at me.

“You were both wrong.””

The agent removed the memory card.

“What’s on this?””

Victoria whispered:

“A recording.””

My heart stopped.

“Of what?””

“Of the night your father died.””

Nobody moved.

The agent immediately prepared the device.

The recording began.

Static.

A car engine.

Then voices.

My father.

And Daniel.

I froze.

Daniel.

His voice was younger.

But unmistakable.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””

My father replied:

“I understand exactly what I found.””

Daniel sounded nervous.

“You should give me the documents.””

“No.””

A pause.

Then my father said:

“You’re not your father’s son anymore, Daniel.””

Silence.

Then Daniel spoke.

“You don’t know what I’m capable of.””

The recording ended.

But that wasn’t all.

A second voice appeared.

Richard.

“Do it.””

The room went cold.

The agent looked at Victoria.

“Is there more?””

She nodded.

“There’s another file.””

The second recording played.

This one was clearer.

Richard’s voice.

“Your father chose honesty over survival.””

Daniel answered.

“He was always difficult.””

Then Victoria’s own voice.

“Stop.””

Everyone looked at her.

She closed her eyes.

“I tried to stop them.””

The recording continued.

“I’m warning you, Daniel. If you do this, you will destroy everything.””

Daniel replied:

“Everything is already mine.””

The file ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Arthur whispered:

“My son.””

Not anger.

Not sadness.

Something worse.

Disappointment.

The agent immediately stood.

“We have enough.””

Victoria looked at me.

“I know I can’t undo what happened.””

I stared at her.

“No.””

She nodded.

“But I can finally tell the truth.””

I looked at the memory card.

The evidence.

The years of lies.

Then my phone rang.

The screen showed a number I didn’t recognize.

I answered.

A voice spoke immediately.

“Emma.””

My body froze.

Because I knew that voice.

Daniel.

But he wasn’t angry.

He sounded calm.

Almost amused.

“You finally found the truth.””

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“How are you calling me?””

A quiet laugh.

“Because you still don’t know the biggest secret.””

I looked around the room.

“What secret?””

Daniel paused.

May you like

Then whispered:

“The wedding wasn’t my plan.””
