Chapter 6: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

The address was an abandoned office building on the edge of the city.

I knew I shouldn’t go.

Every logical thought in my mind screamed the same warning.

It was a trap.

Daniel had spent months controlling every situation.

This could be another one.

But there was one thing stronger than fear.

The need to know why.

Two hours later, I stood outside the empty building with an agent nearby.

I wasn’t alone.

Not anymore.

That was the difference between today and eight months ago.

The old Emma would have walked inside believing she could fix everything.

The new Emma walked inside knowing she deserved answers.

The hallway smelled like dust and old paper.

My footsteps echoed.

Then I heard a voice.

“Emma.””

I stopped.

Claire stepped out from the shadows.

Her face looked exhausted.

Her eyes were red.

Not from fear.

From guilt.

“Why?”” I asked.

She looked down.

“I wanted to tell you.””

“When?””

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I laughed softly.

A painful laugh.

“Was there ever a moment when you planned to?””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

She looked away.

“Because Daniel had something on me.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

Claire took a breath.

“My brother.””

The room became quiet.

“He was involved in one of Daniel’s companies. Daniel threatened to destroy his life.””

I shook my head.

“So you helped him destroy mine?””

Claire cried.

“I thought I could control the damage.””

I stepped closer.

“You thought you could control Daniel Mercer?””

She closed her eyes.

“No.””

A tear fell.

“I thought I could protect you.””

The answer made me angry.

Because it sounded like the same excuse everyone used.

Everyone who hurt me claimed they were protecting me.

Daniel.

Victoria.

Now Claire.

“Protection doesn’t look like betrayal.””

Claire looked at me.

“I know.””

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she reached into her bag.

“I have something.””

She pulled out a small recording device.

My eyes narrowed.

“What is that?””

“The reason Daniel can’t escape.””

She handed it to me.

“He doesn’t know I recorded him.””

I stared at the device.

“What did you record?””

Claire looked terrified.

“The conversation where Daniel planned everything.””

My fingers closed around it.

“What everything?””

Claire whispered:

“The accident.””

My blood ran cold.

“What accident?””

She looked at me.

“The one he told everyone was a mistake.””

The hallway suddenly felt smaller.

Because I remembered.

The night my car brakes failed.

The night Daniel said I was lucky to survive.

The night everyone called it an accident.

Claire stepped closer.

“Emma, Daniel didn’t just hurt you.””

She swallowed.

“He tried to make sure you couldn’t leave him.””

I stared at the recording device in my hand.

Eight months of bruises.

Eight months of fear.

Eight months of believing Daniel was simply cruel.

But now I wondered if the truth was much darker.

My phone rang.

The screen showed a blocked number.

I answered.

Nobody spoke at first.

Then a familiar voice whispered.

“Emma.””

I froze.

Because the voice wasn’t Daniel’s.

It was Victoria’s.

“Do you want to know what really happened the night you almost died?””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Tell me.””

A pause.

Then Victoria said:

“Because Daniel wasn’t the person who planned it.””

The call ended.

And on the recording device in my hand…

a new file appeared.
