Chapter 7: The Woman Who Knew My Husband's Secrets

“Your husband left you something that was never supposed to be yours.””

Vanessa Cole stood beneath the vineyard's stone archway, holding a document between two perfectly manicured fingers.

She looked nothing like the criminal I had imagined.

Her cream-colored suit was immaculate. Her blonde hair fell neatly over her shoulders, and her expensive handbag probably cost more than the first car Daniel and I had ever owned.

She looked like someone who belonged in a corporate boardroom.

Not someone who had just threatened my family.

I stared at the paper in her hand.

“Where did you get that?””

Vanessa smiled.

“Daniel gave it to me.””

Thomas immediately stepped forward.

“That's impossible.””

“Is it, Thomas?””

“You weren't authorized to handle any of his estate documents.””

Vanessa laughed softly.

“Still pretending you're the responsible one? That's adorable.””

Richard moved beside me.

“Who exactly are you, Ms. Cole?””

Vanessa turned toward him.

“Richard Whitmore. It's been a long time.””

Richard's expression hardened.

“I remember you. Your investment company approached my family years ago.””

“And you declined a very profitable opportunity.””

“Because your financial projections didn't make sense.””

Vanessa shrugged.

“Your loss.””

Ethan looked between them.

“Can somebody explain what's happening?””

Vanessa glanced at Olivia.

“Your fiancée understands perfectly well.””

Olivia shook her head.

“You said you wouldn't come here.””

“I said I'd come if you failed to complete the transfer.””

“I told you I needed more time!””

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

“You've had eighteen months.””

I turned toward my daughter.

“Eighteen months?””

Olivia wouldn't look at me.

Vanessa approached the table and placed the document beside Daniel's photograph.

“This is an assignment agreement. Daniel signed it before his death, transferring certain rights in his investment portfolio to my company.””

Thomas grabbed the paper.

“That's a photocopy.””

“It's a legally executed agreement.””

“No. It's missing the original notarial certification.””

Vanessa tilted her head.

“Then perhaps you should look at the original.””

She opened her handbag and removed another folder.

Thomas examined the first page.

His hands began trembling.

“What is it?”” I asked.

He looked at me.

“It's Daniel's signature.””

I leaned closer.

There it was.

My husband's familiar handwriting.

The same signature he'd used on birthday cards, Christmas presents, and the mortgage documents for our house.

But something was wrong.

“Daniel never told me about this.””

Vanessa smiled.

“Of course he didn't.””

“Why?””

“Because he understood that you wouldn't have approved.””

I looked directly at her.

“What did you do to him?””

Her expression remained calm.

“Nothing that wasn't business.””

Thomas slammed the folder shut.

“Daniel refused to authorize the transfer. I was present during his final meeting with the attorney.””

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

“Were you?””

“Yes. He explicitly instructed us to reject any agreement that transferred control of the trust.””

“Then explain his signature.””

Thomas didn't answer.

Richard stepped forward.

“Enough. I'm calling the police.””

Vanessa didn't flinch.

“Go ahead. But before you do, perhaps you should ask Margaret why Daniel kept an entire investment portfolio hidden from her.””

I felt the air leave my lungs.

“Hidden from me?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Your husband wasn't the ordinary businessman you thought he was. He was involved in a property investment network that included several very wealthy families.””

She looked at Richard.

“Some of those families lost substantial money when Daniel refused to complete the deal.””

Richard's jaw tightened.

“Are you accusing Daniel of stealing money?””

“I'm suggesting he wasn't entirely honest with his wife.””

I turned toward Thomas.

“Is any of this true?””

Thomas took a breath.

“Daniel invested in commercial property. He never hid the existence of the investments from me, but he kept the details private because he was protecting the trust.””

“Why?””

“Because the original investment partners had begun making unauthorized withdrawals.””

Vanessa laughed.

“That's a convenient story.””

Then she turned toward Olivia.

“Tell your mother what happened when you first found the documents.””

Olivia began shaking.

“Stop.””

“Tell her how you contacted me.””

“Please.””

“Tell her how you asked me to help you access the trust.””

I looked at my daughter.

“Is that how this started?””

Olivia whispered, “I just wanted to know what Dad left me.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“And I helped her.””

Thomas shook his head.

“You exploited her.””

“I gave her an opportunity.””

“You gave her forged documents.””

Vanessa's smile returned.

“Proof?””

Before Thomas could respond, Richard's phone rang.

He answered.

“Yes?””

A moment later, his expression changed.

“What do you mean the original trust documents have been accessed?””

He listened carefully.

Then he looked at Thomas.

“Your attorney says someone attempted to transfer the controlling interest in the Hayes Family Trust this morning.””

Thomas went completely still.

“That's impossible. The trust administrator placed a hold on it.””

Richard continued listening.

“Apparently, the request was submitted before the hold became effective.””

My heart pounded.

“Richard, what does that mean?””

He lowered the phone.

“It means someone may already have transferred a portion of the assets.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She smiled.

Then she leaned toward me and whispered:

“Your daughter wasn't the only person who signed those papers, Margaret.””

I turned toward Olivia.

She was crying again.

“Mom, I didn't know she was going to—”

“Going to what?””

Olivia swallowed.

“Transfer the money before the wedding.””

Thomas grabbed the folder.

“Which account received the transfer?””

Vanessa closed her handbag.

“That's something you'll have to discover yourselves.””

Then she walked toward the SUV.

Richard shouted after her.

“Vanessa! You're not leaving!””

She stopped.

Without turning around, she said:

“Richard, you should be more worried about your own son.””

Ethan frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa finally looked back.

“Ask him who approved the first investment.””

Then she climbed into the SUV.

And as the vehicle disappeared down the driveway, Ethan turned toward his father with an expression I'd never forget.

“Dad, what investment is she talking about?””

May you like

Richard didn't answer.

He was staring at his son as though he had just remembered something terrible.
