Chapter 10: The Envelope on My Doorstep

“Mom, please don't open that envelope.””

Olivia's voice trembled.

I stared at her across the courtyard.

“Why?””

She wiped her cheeks and shook her head.

“Because whoever sent that photograph is trying to destroy our family.””

I looked down at my phone again.

The photograph showed Olivia standing beside Vanessa outside a bank. They were holding hands, and Olivia was smiling.

Six months earlier.

Before the wedding.

Before the lies about my death.

Before the fraudulent guardianship papers.

And beneath the photograph was a message claiming my daughter had been hired.

“Olivia, who hired you?””

She looked toward Ethan.

Then at Thomas.

Finally, her eyes settled on me.

“I can't tell you.””

Richard stepped forward.

“You've reached the point where silence is no longer protecting you.””

Olivia shook her head.

“You don't understand what these people can do.””

“Who are they?”” Ethan demanded.

She began crying.

“Vanessa isn't the person in charge.””

The words silenced everyone.

Thomas immediately pulled out his phone.

“Margaret, we need to get to your house. Whatever is in that envelope may be important.””

Richard offered to arrange transportation.

I declined.

“I want to go home in my own car.””

Eleanor touched my shoulder.

“Would you like someone to come with you?””

I looked at Thomas.

“Yes. But I want to speak to Olivia alone first.””

Ethan frowned.

“Mrs. Hayes, I don't think that's safe.””

“I don't intend to be alone with her for long. I just need one honest conversation with my daughter.””

Olivia lowered her head.

Ethan stepped away.

“I'll wait here.””

Before leaving, I looked at Olivia.

“You're coming with me.””

She nodded reluctantly.

We drove through Nashville in silence.

The late afternoon sunlight reflected off the windshields of passing cars. I kept both hands on the steering wheel, occasionally glancing at Olivia in the passenger seat.

She looked exhausted.

Her wedding dress was wrinkled, her makeup streaked, and the diamond bracelet I had given her was still on her wrist.

Finally, she spoke.

“Mom?””

“Yes?””

“Do you remember when Dad used to take us to the lake?””

I swallowed.

“Of course.””

“He always let me choose the music.””

“He did.””

Olivia stared out the window.

“I remember him telling me I could become anything I wanted.””

“He meant it.””

She began crying again.

“I think I disappointed him.””

I didn't answer.

There were too many things I wanted to say.

But none of them would change what had happened.

When we reached my house, I immediately noticed the envelope on the welcome mat.

It was large, cream-colored, and sealed with black tape.

A small handwritten note was attached.

MARGARET — OPEN THIS ALONE.

I looked at Olivia.

“Did you know someone was coming here?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

I picked up the envelope.

It was heavier than I expected.

Inside the house, I locked the front door and placed the envelope on the kitchen table.

The same table where Daniel used to review his investment papers.

I carefully cut the tape.

Inside were three items.

A USB drive.

A photograph.

And a handwritten letter.

The photograph showed Daniel standing beside Vanessa Cole.

But this time, another man stood with them.

I recognized him immediately.

My brother-in-law, Thomas.

All three were standing outside a building with a sign reading HAYES PROPERTY DEVELOPMENT.

I stared at the photograph.

“Olivia, did you know Thomas worked with Vanessa?””

She shook her head.

“Not like that.””

I opened the letter.

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

Margaret,

Your husband discovered that the original investment partners were diverting money from the development company. He refused to participate.

But he wasn't the only person who knew.

Someone close to him agreed to help Vanessa conceal the transactions.

The person who signed the original agreement was not Vanessa.

It was Thomas.

I stopped reading.

My hands began trembling.

Olivia moved closer.

“Mom?””

I continued.

Do not confront him until you have watched the recording on the USB drive.

There is a reason Daniel never told you everything.

And there is a reason Thomas has been protecting Olivia.

At the bottom was a name.

Eleanor Whitmore.

I looked up.

“Eleanor sent this?””

Olivia stared at the letter.

“I don't know.””

I inserted the USB drive into my laptop.

A video file appeared.

The date was seven years earlier.

I pressed play.

The screen showed Daniel sitting in his office.

He looked tired.

There were papers scattered across his desk.

Then Thomas entered.

Daniel looked up.

“Tom, I need you to tell me the truth.””

Thomas closed the office door.

“What truth?””

“Did you transfer the money?””

Thomas looked toward the camera.

Then back at Daniel.

“Listen, Daniel. I can explain.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“You told me the investment was secure.””

“It was.””

“Then why is Vanessa moving money through accounts I never authorized?””

Thomas rubbed his face.

“Because we had no other choice.””

Daniel stood up.

“There is always another choice.””

Thomas lowered his voice.

“Daniel, if we expose this now, everyone loses everything.””

The video ended abruptly.

I sat motionless.

Olivia whispered:

“Mom, there's another file.””

A second recording appeared.

This one was dated two weeks before Daniel's accident.

I pressed play.

Daniel was speaking to someone outside the camera's view.

“I've decided to remove Thomas from the investment structure.””

A woman's voice answered.

“You can't do that.””

Daniel turned.

“I can, and I will.””

The woman stepped into view.

It was Vanessa.

She leaned across the desk.

“Then you should consider what happens to the people you leave behind.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Are you threatening my family?””

Vanessa smiled.

“I'm giving you advice.””

The recording stopped.

I slowly turned toward Olivia.

“Your father knew she was dangerous.””

Olivia nodded.

Then she whispered something that made my blood run cold.

“Mom, there's one more thing. Vanessa didn't hire me to steal the trust.””

I stared at her.

“Then what did she hire you to do?””

Olivia looked directly into my eyes.

“To make sure you signed something before the wedding.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What?””

She began shaking.

“A document that would permanently transfer the family trust.””

“And if I refused?””

May you like

Olivia lowered her eyes.

“Vanessa said she would reveal what really happened the night Dad died.””
