Chapter 11: What Really Happened the Night Daniel Died
I couldn't move.
“What did you just say?””
Olivia covered her face.
“She told me Dad's accident wasn't what everyone thought.””
I stared at her.
“Your father died in a highway accident. The police investigated it.””
“I know.””
“Then what are you talking about?””
Olivia looked toward the laptop.
“Vanessa said there was another car involved. She said Dad had been followed that night.””
I felt my knees weaken.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because I didn't know whether it was true!””
I gripped the edge of the kitchen table.
For twenty-four years, I had lived with the memory of that phone call.
A police officer telling me there had been an accident.
A hospital hallway.
A doctor shaking his head.
I had spent years accepting that Daniel was gone.
Now someone was suggesting that the tragedy might have been connected to the very people trying to steal his money.
“Where did Vanessa get this information?””
“She said Thomas knew.””
I looked at the photograph again.
Daniel, Thomas, and Vanessa.
Three people standing outside a building.
One dead.
One possibly involved.
And one still threatening my family.
I reached for my phone.
“I need to call Thomas.””
Olivia grabbed my wrist.
“Please don't!””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because I don't know what he'll do.””
“Olivia, he's your uncle.””
“He isn't the person you think he is!””
Before I could respond, someone knocked on the front door.
Three firm knocks.
I checked the security camera.
Thomas stood outside.
His face was pale.
I opened the door but kept the chain attached.
“Thomas, we need to talk.””
He looked past me.
“Is Olivia inside?””
“Yes.””
He lowered his voice.
“Margaret, you need to let me explain before you watch anything else.””
I stared at him.
“I've already watched the recording.””
His expression changed.
“Which one?””
“The one showing you and Daniel discussing the missing money.””
Thomas closed his eyes.
“Then you know I made a mistake.””
“A mistake?””
“I was trying to protect him.””
“You were helping Vanessa?””
He shook his head.
“Not at first.””
I removed the chain.
He entered slowly.
Olivia stood near the kitchen table, looking terrified.
Thomas glanced at the laptop.
“You watched the second recording?””
I nodded.
“Vanessa threatened Daniel.””
Thomas sat down heavily.
“She threatened all of us.””
“Tell me what happened the night Daniel died.””
He stared at his hands.
Then he began speaking.
“Seven years ago, Daniel discovered that Vanessa and two other investors were transferring money out of the development company. He contacted an attorney and planned to report everything.””
“Why didn't you go with him?””
“Because I was involved in the original investment structure. I had signed documents without properly reviewing them. I thought I could correct the problem before anyone found out.””
“You were taking money?””
“No. But I allowed transactions I should have questioned.””
I looked at him.
“And the night Daniel died?””
Thomas swallowed.
“He called me at 8:15 p.m. He said he had found proof that Vanessa was moving money through a private account.””
“Did you meet him?””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
“At a restaurant near the interstate.””
My heart pounded.
“Was Vanessa there?””
Thomas nodded.
“She arrived about twenty minutes later.””
Olivia whispered, “You never told me that.””
Thomas looked at her.
“You weren't supposed to know.””
I felt sick.
“What happened afterward?””
“Daniel left first. I stayed behind with Vanessa. She was furious. She said Daniel was going to destroy everything.””
“And then?””
Thomas looked directly at me.
“About forty minutes later, I received a call. Daniel had been involved in an accident.””
I sat down.
“Did you see him?””
“No. By the time I reached the hospital, he'd already been pronounced dead.””
I covered my mouth.
Thomas continued.
“I should have told the police about the meeting. But I was afraid my involvement in the financial transactions would become public. I convinced myself the accident had nothing to do with Vanessa.””
“Did you ever investigate?””
“Yes.””
He reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded document.
“This is a copy of the police incident report. The original investigation found no evidence of foul play. But there was something unusual.””
“What?””
“The vehicle that struck Daniel's car was never identified.””
I stared at him.
“You mean the other driver left?””
Thomas nodded.
“According to the report, Daniel's car was forced off the road. The other vehicle disappeared before witnesses could identify it.””
Olivia began crying.
“Why didn't anyone tell me?””
Thomas looked at her.
“Because I thought keeping quiet would protect you.””
I shook my head.
“Keeping quiet protected the people who did this.””
Thomas lowered his head.
“I know.””
My phone rang.
It was Richard.
I answered immediately.
“Margaret, where are you?””
“At home. Thomas is here.””
Richard's voice grew urgent.
“Don't let him leave. Our attorney has found something in the original company records.””
“What?””
“An insurance policy connected to Daniel's investment company. It was issued shortly before his death.””
My blood ran cold.
“An insurance policy?””
“Yes. And the beneficiary wasn't you.””
I looked at Thomas.
He had gone completely still.
Richard continued.
“The beneficiary was a company registered under Vanessa Cole's name.””
I whispered, “How much?””
“Three million dollars.””
I nearly dropped the phone.
Richard added:
“There's another problem. The policy was paid out two weeks after Daniel's death.””
I looked at Thomas.
“Did you know about this?””
He didn't answer.
Richard's voice became sharper.
“Margaret, listen. Our attorney has just received a call from the insurance company's legal department. They believe the policy may have been issued using fraudulent medical and financial declarations.””
I closed my eyes.
Then Richard said:
“Someone has requested the original application, and the signature on it belongs to Daniel.””
I turned toward the laptop.
On the screen was a photograph of Daniel and Vanessa.
Beside it, another file had appeared.
A scanned insurance application.
I opened it.
The document contained Daniel's signature.
But beneath his name was a handwritten note.
If anything happens to Daniel Hayes, contact the beneficiary immediately.
The emergency contact wasn't Vanessa.
It was Olivia.
I slowly looked at my daughter.
“Why were you listed on your father's insurance policy?””
Olivia began sobbing.
“I was only seventeen, Mom. I didn't know anything!””
Thomas stood up abruptly.
“Margaret, we need to stop this conversation.””
I stared at him.
“Why?””
He looked toward the front window.
“Because somebody has been outside your house for the last ten minutes.””
I turned.
A dark vehicle was parked across the street.
May you like
The headlights were off.
And someone inside was watching us.
