Chapter 4: The Secret Daniel Left Behind
“Your husband didn't die without leaving a fortune.””
Thomas's words echoed through my head.
I stared at my phone, unable to process what he had just said.
“What fortune, Thomas?””
Across the courtyard, Olivia was shaking her head violently.
“Uncle Thomas, hang up!””
Thomas ignored her.
“Margaret, listen to me. Daniel established a trust shortly before his accident. He never told you because he wanted to protect you from something.””
“Protect me from what?””
“Not over the phone.””
I looked at Richard.
He was watching Olivia with an expression of growing disgust.
“Thomas, I need you to explain this right now. My daughter has been using my identity. She's submitted documents claiming she has authority over my home. What does Daniel have to do with this?””
Thomas sighed.
“Do you remember the insurance paperwork I helped you organize after Daniel died?””
“Of course.””
“There was an additional document in his office. A sealed envelope addressed to you. I found it when I was going through his belongings, but Olivia took it before I could give it to you.””
My stomach tightened.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because she told me you had already received it.””
I looked directly at Olivia.
She wouldn't meet my eyes.
Thomas continued.
“Last year, Olivia contacted me. She said she needed information about Daniel's estate. She claimed you were becoming forgetful and had asked her to handle your financial affairs.””
“That's a lie!””
“I know that now.””
Richard stepped closer.
“Thomas, what exactly was in that envelope?””
“A letter from Daniel's attorney and the original trust documents. Daniel had invested in a commercial property development company several years before his death. His shares were placed in a family trust.””
“How much?”” Richard asked.
Thomas hesitated.
“Approximately $2.4 million at the time Daniel died. The assets have appreciated considerably since then.””
I felt the ground shift beneath my feet.
Two million dollars.
The same amount Olivia had claimed I left her.
Except the money had never been mine to give.
“Who controls the trust?”” I asked.
“You do, Margaret. Daniel named you the primary beneficiary and trustee. Olivia was supposed to receive distributions for education and major life expenses.””
I closed my eyes.
Daniel had always been careful with money. He used to joke that he wanted to leave us something more valuable than his old fishing boat.
I remembered him sitting at our kitchen table, reviewing investment statements while Olivia colored pictures beside him.
He had never mentioned millions.
Thomas lowered his voice.
“There's a condition. The trust has a protection clause. If someone attempts to obtain control through fraud, the trustee can freeze distributions and request an independent investigation.””
I looked at Olivia.
“Did you know about this trust?””
She said nothing.
Thomas answered for her.
“She found the documents last year. She wanted access to the assets.””
Richard shook his head.
“So she invented the inheritance story?””
“That's what I believe.””
Olivia suddenly stepped forward.
“That's not true! Uncle Thomas is twisting everything!””
I turned toward her.
“Then explain it.””
She pointed at the phone.
“He was supposed to help me! He told me Dad left money, but he wouldn't let me have it!””
Thomas's voice sharpened.
“I told you the trust had rules. You wanted me to transfer the entire balance into an account you controlled.””
“Because it was mine!””
“No, Olivia. It was established to protect your future, not finance your lifestyle.””
Ethan stared at her.
“Is that why you told me your mother inherited two million dollars?””
Olivia looked at him.
“I didn't want you thinking I was poor.””
“You told me you had no family!””
“I was ashamed!””
Eleanor Whitmore shook her head.
“Being ashamed of your circumstances is one thing. Erasing your mother is something else entirely.””
Olivia's face crumpled.
Then she looked at me.
“Mom, please. You don't understand what I was trying to do.””
I waited.
“I wanted to access the trust. Uncle Thomas wouldn't cooperate, so I thought if I could prove you weren't capable of managing it, I could become the administrator.””
The courtyard went silent.
I felt something inside me break.
“You wanted to have me declared incompetent?””
“Not permanently!””
The answer came too quickly.
I stepped backward.
“Not permanently?””
Olivia started crying.
“I only needed temporary control. Once the money was transferred, I could fix everything.””
“Fix what?””
She looked away.
For the first time, I noticed her hands trembling.
Ethan grabbed her arm.
“Olivia, what debt are you hiding?””
She pulled away.
“Nothing.””
“Then why do you need millions of dollars?””
“I said nothing!””
Richard took out his phone.
“Thomas, can you come here?””
“I've already called my attorney. I'll be there in twenty minutes.””
Olivia's head snapped up.
“You called a lawyer?””
“Yes,” Thomas replied.
“Because I finally understand what you've been doing.””
The call ended.
I stared at the phone screen.
Then I looked at my daughter.
“Olivia, I want the truth. All of it.””
She wiped her face.
But before she could answer, Ethan's phone rang.
He checked the number.
His expression changed.
“It's my bank.””
He answered.
“Hello?””
A few seconds passed.
Then he looked at Olivia.
“What do you mean the loan application?””
His voice grew louder.
“No, I never authorized a loan against the property.””
Richard stepped forward.
“What loan?””
Ethan listened for another moment.
Then he slowly lowered the phone.
“Someone applied for a $600,000 business loan using my financial information.””
He looked at Olivia.
“And the collateral listed is a property I don't own.””
Olivia closed her eyes.

Ethan whispered:
“Your mother's house.””
