Chapter 6: The Recording My Husband Left
Thomas placed the photograph on the table.
I stared at the woman standing beside my husband.
She appeared to be in her early forties, with shoulder-length blonde hair and a familiar smile.
But I had never seen her before.
“Who is she?”” I asked again.
Thomas opened his briefcase and removed a sealed envelope.
“I don't know her full story. But Daniel's attorney identified her as Vanessa Cole.””
Richard Whitmore looked up.
“Vanessa Cole?””
Thomas nodded.
“Does that name mean anything to you?””
Richard's expression changed.
“Unfortunately, yes.””
He pulled out his phone and searched through his contacts.
“Vanessa Cole used to work for a private investment company. She approached our family about a property development deal several years ago.””
“Was she connected to Daniel?”” I asked.
Richard looked at the photograph.
“Not that I knew of.””
Thomas tapped the envelope.
“Daniel's attorney believes she was involved in the original investment structure.””
Olivia suddenly stepped forward.
“Can we stop talking about this?””
I turned.
“Why?””
“Because this has nothing to do with the wedding anymore!””
Thomas looked at her.
“Actually, Olivia, it has everything to do with the wedding.””
He opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter from Daniel's attorney, dated shortly before his death.
Thomas read the first paragraph aloud.
“Daniel Hayes established the Hayes Family Trust to protect his wife and daughter. Any attempt to obtain control through coercion, fraudulent representation, or unauthorized legal guardianship shall trigger an immediate review of all beneficiary rights.””
Richard nodded slowly.
“So the trust can be frozen?””
“Temporarily, yes. Until the matter is investigated.””
Olivia's face tightened.
“You can't freeze my inheritance!””
Thomas looked at her.
“It's not your inheritance to withdraw whenever you want.””
“I am his daughter!””
“And Margaret is the trustee.””
Olivia turned toward me.
“Mom, please. You can't let them take everything away from me.””
I stared at her.
“Everything?””
She looked down.
I took a slow breath.
“Olivia, I spent my retirement savings on your wedding. I trusted you with my personal information. I let you into my home. And you used that trust to try to take my house.””
Her lips trembled.
“I made mistakes.””
“You told people I was dead.””
“I was ashamed!””
“You forged my signature.””
“I was desperate!””
“You tried to have me declared incompetent.””
She started crying harder.
I shook my head.
“Stop giving every decision a different name. At some point, you have to call it what it is.””
Thomas placed a small digital recorder on the table.
“This is the recording Daniel left with his attorney.””
I froze.
“My husband recorded something?””
“Yes. He asked that it be preserved until the trust was properly reviewed.””
Thomas pressed the button.
A burst of static filled the courtyard.
Then I heard a voice I hadn't heard in twenty-four years.
“Margaret, sweetheart. If you're hearing this, something has happened that I hoped would never happen.””
My hand flew to my mouth.
Daniel.
It was Daniel.
His voice was warm, slightly rough, and unmistakably familiar.
“First, I want you to know that I love you. I love Olivia. Everything I built was meant to give you both security.””
I began crying silently.
Ethan lowered his head.
Even Richard looked away.
Daniel continued.
“The trust is not a prize. It's a responsibility. I created it because someone approached me with an offer that seemed too good to be true. I discovered that the investment structure was being manipulated.””
Thomas glanced at Richard.
The recording continued.
“I refused to sign the final agreement. But the people involved know about the trust. If anyone tries to access it improperly, please contact my attorney immediately.””
There was a pause.
Then Daniel said something that made my heart stop.
“Margaret, if Olivia is involved, please don't assume she understands what she's doing. Someone has been influencing her.””
I looked at my daughter.
Her tears had stopped.
Daniel's voice continued.
“I know our little girl. She wants to be admired. She wants to prove she can stand on her own. But there are people who will use that desire against her.””
The recording ended with a soft click.
Nobody spoke.
I looked at Thomas.
“Who was influencing her?””
He closed his eyes.
“Vanessa Cole.””
Olivia suddenly grabbed the edge of the table.
“Uncle Thomas, stop!””
He looked at her.
“You know her?””
Olivia didn't answer.
Richard stepped forward.
“Olivia, who is Vanessa Cole?””
She shook her head.
“I don't know what you're talking about.””
Thomas removed another document from the envelope.
“This is a transfer request submitted to the trust administrator last year. The beneficiary information was altered, and the authorization section contains Margaret's forged signature.””
He placed it beside the wedding guarantee.
The signatures were almost identical.
But there was another name on the form.
Vanessa Cole.
I stared at the paper.
“Why is her name here?””
Thomas lowered his voice.
“Because Olivia wasn't working alone.””
Ethan looked at his fiancée.
“Olivia, tell me the truth.””
She backed away.
“I don't know what you want me to say.””
Richard took the document.
“Vanessa was involved in an investment company that lost millions several years ago. If this is the same person, we need to contact the authorities.””
Olivia's eyes filled again.
“Please don't.””
Ethan stared at her.
“Why are you protecting this woman?””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Then her phone vibrated.
Everyone looked at it.
A message appeared on the screen.
Olivia glanced down and immediately tried to hide the phone.
But Richard had already seen the name at the top.
VANESSA COLE.
He reached for the phone.
“Don't touch that,” Olivia snapped.
Richard stopped.
“What did she send you?””
Olivia clutched the phone against her chest.
I stepped closer.
“Olivia, what does Vanessa want?””
My daughter looked at me.
For one brief moment, I saw the little girl who used to run into my arms after school.
Then her expression changed.
She whispered:
“She said if I didn't get the trust transferred today, she'd make sure none of us ever saw the money.””
Thomas went pale.
“Margaret, we need to leave this venue.””
“Why?””
He looked toward the driveway.
A black SUV had just pulled up.
The passenger door opened.
A blonde woman stepped out wearing oversized sunglasses and a cream-colored suit.
Olivia whispered her name.
“Vanessa.””
The woman removed her sunglasses, looked directly at me, and smiled.
Then she said:
May you like
“Margaret Hayes. We've finally met. Your husband left you something that was never supposed to be yours.””
And before I could respond, she held up a document bearing Daniel's signature.
