Chapter 5: The Six-Hundred-Thousand-Dollar Loan

Ethan looked like a man who had just watched his entire future collapse.

“Olivia,” he said, “tell me you didn't do this.””

She shook her head.

“It's a misunderstanding.””

“Then explain why my bank has an application with my name on it.””

“I was trying to help us.””

“Help us do what?””

She looked toward the guests gathering behind the glass doors.

“Can we please discuss this somewhere private?””

Richard pointed toward the courtyard.

“No. You have spent months creating a false story. We're finished pretending everything is fine.””

Ethan held up his phone.

“The bank says the application was submitted three days ago. It includes my income statements, identification, and a property valuation.””

I frowned.

“Why would my house be listed as collateral?””

Ethan looked at the screen.

“Because the application claims Olivia has legal authority to pledge it.””

I felt sick.

My house wasn't luxurious.

It was a modest three-bedroom home in a quiet Nashville neighborhood. Daniel and I had bought it when Olivia was two.

It had a small backyard, a cracked driveway, and a kitchen where I'd spent thousands of evenings preparing dinner.

It was the only place that still felt like Daniel was somewhere nearby.

And my daughter had apparently decided it belonged to her.

“Did you submit the application?”” I asked Olivia.

She rubbed her forehead.

“Mom, I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

“When everything was settled.””

“What does that mean?””

She looked at Ethan.

“I had a business opportunity.””

Richard gave a cold laugh.

“A $600,000 business opportunity that requires a forged signature and your mother's house?””

Olivia's voice rose.

“You don't know what I've been dealing with!””

Ethan stepped closer.

“Then tell us.””

She hesitated.

Finally, she whispered, “I owe money.””

“How much?”” Ethan asked.

She said nothing.

“How much, Olivia?””

“Four hundred thousand.””

Ethan stared at her.

Richard slowly lowered his phone.

“Four hundred thousand dollars?””

Olivia nodded.

The silence that followed was unbearable.

I remembered the designer handbags she'd shown me in photographs. The expensive vacations she posted online. The restaurant dinners and luxury shopping trips.

I'd assumed Ethan's family was helping her maintain that lifestyle.

Now I understood that something else had been happening.

“Where did the money go?”” I asked.

Olivia started pacing.

“Investments. Business expenses. A few bad decisions.””

“What investments?””

She hesitated.

“An online company.””

“What company?””

“Luxury property rentals.””

Richard frowned.

“You told us you worked in marketing.””

“I did.””

“For whom?””

Olivia looked down.

“I was running the company.””

Ethan's expression hardened.

“You told me you were earning a six-figure salary.””

“I was.””

“From what?””

She didn't answer.

Richard took out his phone.

“I want our attorney involved immediately.””

Olivia grabbed his sleeve.

“Please don't!””

He removed her hand.

“You have dragged my son into a financial situation he knows nothing about. You have apparently used Margaret's identity. And now you want us to protect you?””

Olivia looked at Eleanor.

“Mrs. Whitmore, please. You said you considered me family.””

Eleanor's eyes filled with disappointment.

“I did. That's why this hurts so much.””

A few minutes later, the wedding coordinator approached with two security personnel.

“Mr. Whitmore, several vendors are requesting clarification about the outstanding balances. Also, the photographer has informed us that the final payment account was changed yesterday.””

I frowned.

“Changed to what account?””

The coordinator opened her tablet.

“A new account ending in 8421.””

I recognized the numbers.

They matched the account shown on the fraudulent property deposit receipt.

Richard leaned over.

“Who authorized that?””

“Miss Olivia Hayes.””

Ethan looked at her.

“You diverted the wedding payments?””

Olivia's eyes widened.

“I was going to replace the money!””

“How much?””

She didn't answer.

The coordinator spoke quietly.

“Approximately $32,000 was redirected.””

My knees nearly gave out.

Thirty-two thousand dollars.

Money I had worked decades to save.

Money intended to pay for the celebration Olivia had dreamed about since childhood.

I sat down on a nearby bench.

For a moment, I was no longer standing outside a wedding venue.

I was back in my little kitchen, watching six-year-old Olivia blow out birthday candles while Daniel laughed beside her.

I remembered promising him I would give our daughter every opportunity I could.

I had kept that promise.

But somewhere along the way, Olivia had learned to confuse love with unlimited access.

Ethan crouched in front of me.

“Mrs. Hayes, I'm sorry.””

I shook my head.

“You didn't do this.””

He looked toward Olivia.

“I should have asked more questions.””

Before I could respond, a black sedan pulled into the courtyard.

A man in a navy suit stepped out carrying a leather briefcase.

Thomas Hayes.

My brother-in-law.

He looked older than I remembered. His hair had turned almost completely gray, and his face was drawn with exhaustion.

He approached me first.

“Margaret.””

I stood.

“Thomas, what have you done?””

He lowered his eyes.

“I should have come to you months ago.””

“Why didn't you?””

“Because I thought I could handle Olivia without involving you.””

I stared at him.

“You knew she was using my information?””

He nodded slowly.

“I discovered the fraudulent account six months ago. I confronted her. She promised to stop.””

Olivia immediately interrupted.

“Uncle Thomas, don't!””

He turned toward her.

“You promised me you would destroy the documents.””

“I was going to!””

“No. You created more.””

He placed his briefcase on a nearby table and removed a thick envelope.

“Margaret, this contains copies of the original trust documents, Daniel's attorney correspondence, and the messages Olivia sent me.””

I took the envelope.

My husband's handwriting appeared on the front.

TO MY WIFE, MARGARET.

My hands began shaking.

Thomas spoke softly.

“There's something else. Daniel left a recorded message with his attorney. He specifically instructed that it should only be played if someone attempted to take control of the trust through deception.””

I looked at him.

“Why would Daniel anticipate something like this?””

Thomas glanced toward Olivia.

“Because he knew someone had already approached him about the money.””

“Who?””

Thomas opened his briefcase again.

He removed a small photograph.

It showed Daniel standing outside a restaurant with a woman I didn't recognize.

On the back was a handwritten date.

Three weeks before his accident.

And beneath it were five words.

THE WOMAN WHO KNOWS EVERYTHING.

I looked up.

“Thomas, who is she?””

May you like

His face tightened.

“That's what Daniel was trying to warn you about.””
