Chapter 9: The Recording I Was Never Meant To Hear

The video paused.

Nobody wanted to press play.

It was strange.

After everything I had learned, I still wasn’t ready for the final piece.

Because part of me was still holding onto the old Mark.

The man who made pancakes on Sunday mornings.

The man who sat beside Noah during homework.

The man who promised me forever.

But the man on that screen was someone else.

“Play it,” Noah whispered.

I looked at him.

His face was pale.

But he didn’t look away.

I pressed the button.

The video continued.

The hallway camera showed Jason standing outside our apartment.

Then Mark walked closer.

The audio crackled.

For a few seconds, there was only static.

Then I heard it.

Mark’s voice.

“You need to leave.””

My breath caught.

Jason on the screen shook his head.

“I’m not leaving my son.””

The younger Mark stepped closer.

“You don’t get to walk back in after everything.””

Jason replied:

“I made mistakes. I know that. But I’m still his father.””

I covered my mouth.

Those words.

Those exact words.

They were the words I had been waiting years to hear.

Then Mark said something that made my blood run cold.

“He already has a father.””

The room went silent.

Noah looked at Mark.

Mark looked away.

On the screen, Jason laughed sadly.

“You?””

Mark didn’t answer.

Jason continued.

“You think buying him school supplies makes you his father?””

The younger Mark’s expression changed.

“I’ve done more for him than you ever did.””

Jason nodded.

“Maybe.””

A pause.

“But you don’t love him.””

Mark stepped forward.

“Yes, I do.””

“Then why are you trying to make him forget me?””

The video shook slightly.

Then came the sentence that destroyed everything.

Mark said:

“Because if you stay, I lose my family.””

I felt something inside me break.

Not because he was afraid.

Because he admitted it.

Everything he did was never about Noah.

It was about keeping me.

The video continued.

Jason lowered his voice.

“Sarah deserves to know.””

Mark looked around.

“No.””

“You can’t control her forever.””

Then Mark said:

“If she finds out, she’ll hate me.””

Jason replied:

“Maybe she should.””

The screen went dark.

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Noah wiped his face.

“So that’s it?””

Mark didn’t answer.

I looked at my husband.

Nine years.

Nine years of birthdays.

Christmas mornings.

Family vacations.

All built on something he stole.

“You let me hate him.””

Mark’s eyes filled.

“I was wrong.””

“You let my son think his father abandoned him.””

“I know.””

“You watched him hurt.””

“I know.””

His voice broke.

“I know.””

I wanted to scream.

I wanted answers.

I wanted the last nine years back.

But time doesn’t return what people steal.

It only reveals who took it.

Jason quietly picked up the USB.

“I’m sorry you had to see that.””

I looked at him.

“You were telling the truth.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

Noah turned toward him.

For a moment, neither of them moved.

Then Noah said:

“I don’t know how to do this.””

Jason’s eyes filled with tears.

“Neither do I.””

It was the first honest thing I had heard all day.

Not a promise.

Not an excuse.

Just two people admitting they didn’t know how to fix something broken.

My phone suddenly rang.

I looked down.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice spoke.

“Sarah?””

I frowned.

“Who is this?””

There was a pause.

Then:

“My name is Claire. I’m Mark’s sister.””

My body went still.

“Why are you calling me?””

Her voice trembled.

“Because there’s something Mark never told you.””

I looked at my husband.

He had heard the name.

And his face changed.

“What?””

Claire whispered:

“The night Jason was arrested…”

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“Yes?””

“He wasn’t the one who called the police.””

My heart stopped.

“Then who did?””

Silence.

Then her answer came.

And it was the one thing nobody in that room expected.

“Sarah…”

May you like

Her voice broke.

“It was me.””
