Chapter 12: The Letter I Never Sent
I couldn’t move.
The letter shook in my hands.
My own handwriting stared back at me.
My own words.
My own feelings.
Hidden for nine years.
I looked at Mark.
“How did you get this?””
He didn’t answer.
Again.
Silence.
The answer I hated most.
Noah picked up the letter.
“Mom?””
I nodded.
“Read it.””
His eyes moved across the page.
Then his expression changed.
“What?””
“What?””
He looked at me.
“Mom…”
He handed it back.
I read the words myself.
Jason,
I know Mark said you don’t want to be part of Noah’s life anymore. I don’t believe that. I know you love him.
I don’t understand why you’re pushing us away, but I won’t let Noah think his father doesn’t care.
Please call me.
Please come home.
I stopped reading.
Because I remembered writing it.
The night after Jason disappeared.
I remembered sitting on the kitchen floor.
Crying.
Waiting for him to call.
Waiting for an explanation.
I looked at Jason.
“You never got this.””
He shook his head.
“No.””
I looked at Mark.
“You took it.””
He looked away.
That was his confession.
Noah stepped back.
“Why?””
Mark’s eyes filled.
“I thought if Jason came back…”
He stopped.
“No.””
I walked closer.
“Finish.””
His voice broke.
“If Jason came back, I would lose everything.””
There it was.
The truth.
Not protection.
Not love.
Fear.
Selfish fear.
Jason looked at him.
“You didn’t just take Sarah from me.””
His voice became quiet.
“You took my son from me.””
Mark sat down.
For the first time, he looked small.
“I know.””
Noah looked at him.
“Do you?””
Mark looked up.
Noah continued.
“Because I spent years wondering why my dad didn’t love me.””
A tear fell down my son’s face.
“I wondered what was wrong with me.””
Mark closed his eyes.
“Noah…”
“No.””
My son shook his head.
“I needed you.””
The words destroyed the room.
“I thought you were the only father I had.””
Mark covered his face.
And I almost felt sorry for him.
Almost.
Then I remembered the letters.
The documents.
The years stolen.
My phone buzzed.
I looked down.
A message.
From Claire.
*I found something else. Mark doesn’t know I have it.*
I opened the attachment.
A photograph appeared.
A page from an old journal.
At the bottom was a signature.
Mark’s.
I read the message below.
*This is the reason Jason never fought back after the arrest.*
My heart started racing.
I showed Jason.
He looked confused.
“I’ve never seen this.””
I zoomed in.
The page contained a confession.
Not complete.
Not clear.
But enough.
One sentence stood out.
*I know what happened that night wasn’t Jason’s fault.*
I looked at Mark.
He saw the screen.
And his face changed.
Not guilt.
Panic.
“What did you do?””
The question left my mouth before I realized it.
Mark stood.
“I can explain.””
“No.””
Jason stepped forward.
“Not this time.””
Mark backed away.
Because he knew.
Whatever came next…
was the one thing he had spent nine years trying to hide.
Noah looked at the journal page.
Then at Mark.
“What happened that night?””
Mark said nothing.
The silence stretched.
Then his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
And all the color left his face.
I saw the name.
Claire.
Mark answered.
“Hello?””
A few seconds passed.
Then his expression collapsed.
“What do you mean you told them?””
Everyone froze.
Mark slowly lowered the phone.
May you like
And whispered:
“She found the missing recording.””
