Chapter 7: The Night Everything Changed
For nine years, I had carried one memory in my heart.
Jason standing outside our apartment.
His face full of anger.
His voice full of frustration.
Me holding Noah behind me, believing I had to protect my son from a man who was walking away.
But now every piece of that memory felt wrong.
Like a photograph that had been edited before I ever saw it.
I looked at Mark.
“What happened that night?””
He didn’t answer.
The silence was louder than any confession.
“Mark.””
He rubbed his hands together.
“I didn’t want you to know this.””
My stomach tightened.
“You don’t get to decide what I know anymore.””
Noah stood beside me.
His voice was quiet.
“Tell her.””
Mark looked at him.
For a second, I saw something in his eyes.
Regret.
But it disappeared quickly.
“I made a mistake.””
I shook my head.
“No more of that word.””
His jaw tightened.
“Fine.””
He looked down.
“I made a choice.””
The room became still.
“Jason came to the apartment that night,” Mark said.
I held my breath.
“Yes.””
“What did you say to him?””
Mark didn’t answer immediately.
That was enough.
“You told him something.””
He nodded.
“I told him you didn’t want him there.””
My heart sank.
“You lied.””
“I thought it was better.””
“Better for who?””
Mark looked at me.
“For Noah.””
Noah laughed bitterly.
“Everyone always says that.””
Mark ignored him.
“Jason was unstable. He was angry. He had problems.””
Jason stepped forward.
“You knew why I was angry.””
Mark looked at him.
“I knew you were going to destroy everything.””
Jason’s expression changed.
“Everything?””
“Yes.””
Mark’s voice cracked.
“You had a chance to leave. You had a chance to move on. But you kept coming back.””
I stared.
“You were jealous.””
Mark looked at me.
“I loved you.””
“No.””
The word came out before I could stop it.
“You wanted me.””
He looked hurt.
But I continued.
“You wanted Noah to need you. You wanted to be the only father he remembered.””
Mark said nothing.
Because silence was his answer.
Jason slowly pulled out his phone.
“There’s something else.””
My chest tightened.
“What else could there possibly be?””
Jason looked at Noah.
“I didn’t leave because I wanted to.””
Noah looked up.
Jason continued.
“I left because I was arrested.””
The room froze.
I stared.
“What?””
Jason swallowed.
“That night, after I argued with Mark, the police showed up.””
Mark immediately stepped forward.
“That’s because you threatened me.””
Jason looked at him.
“I never touched you.””
“You scared me.””
Jason laughed softly.
“Because I told you I was going to tell Sarah the truth?””
I looked at Mark.
“What truth?””
Jason unlocked his phone.
He showed me an old message.
A message from nine years ago.
From Mark.
My hands shook as I read it.
*I know what happened with the money. Tell Sarah and I’ll make sure everyone knows what kind of person you are.*
I looked at Jason.
“What money?””
Nobody answered.
My eyes moved to Mark.
“What money?””
Mark’s face went pale.
“Sarah…”
“No.””
My voice rose.
“What money?””
Jason took a deep breath.
“Before we separated, Mark found out about a business deal I was involved in.””
“What kind of deal?””
“A failed investment.””
Mark interrupted.
“He was hiding debt.””
Jason looked at him.
“I was trying to fix it.””
“And you lied to Sarah.””
Jason nodded.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
“But I was working on it.””
I looked between them.
“So both of you lied?””
Jason lowered his head.
“Yes.””
The answer hurt.
Because suddenly the story wasn’t simple.
There wasn’t one perfect person and one terrible person.
There were mistakes.
There were secrets.
But only one person had spent nine years controlling the truth.
Mark.
Jason looked at me.
“The difference is I admitted my mistakes.””
Mark looked away.
Jason continued.
“But Mark used mine to erase me.””
My phone buzzed again.
Another message.
This time from Jason’s lawyer.
A document attachment.
I opened it.
My eyes scanned the page.
Then I stopped.
The date.
The signature.
The words.
My breath caught.
“What?””
Noah looked at me.
“What is it?””
I slowly raised my eyes.
“It says the custody agreement was never finalized.””
Jason frowned.
“What?””
I handed him the phone.
He read it.
Then his face changed.
“This isn’t possible.””
Mark stood up.
“What?””
Jason looked at him.
“The agreement you showed Sarah…”
May you like
He held the phone tightly.
“It was fake.””
