Chapter 11: The Room Full Of Secrets

Mark refused at first.

Of course he did.

He stood in the driveway with his keys in his hand, shaking his head.

“Sarah, this isn’t necessary.””

I stared at him.

“You don’t get to decide what’s necessary anymore.””

Noah stood beside me.

Jason waited near the car.

For the first time in years, I wasn’t following Mark’s version of events.

I was following the truth.

The old office was twenty minutes away.

A small building Mark rented before we bought our house.

He told me it was for storage.

For old work files.

For things he didn’t need anymore.

Apparently, it was also where he kept pieces of my son’s life.

When we arrived, Mark stayed behind.

“I don’t want Noah here.””

Noah looked at him.

“You didn’t want me knowing before either.””

The words hit.

Mark opened the door.

The smell inside was old paper and dust.

I walked in first.

Shelves lined the walls.

Boxes covered the floor.

For a moment, it looked normal.

Then Jason pointed.

“Over there.””

A small filing cabinet sat in the corner.

Locked.

Mark noticed.

His expression changed.

“You can’t just open that.””

I turned.

“Why?””

“Because it’s private.””

I almost laughed.

“Private?””

I walked closer.

“You hid my son’s entire childhood.””

Mark said nothing.

Jason looked at the cabinet.

“Where’s the key?””

Silence.

Then Noah spoke.

“Check his desk.””

Everyone looked at him.

“How do you know?””

Noah shrugged.

“Because people hide things close to themselves.””

The sentence was painful.

Because he had learned that from experience.

I searched the desk drawer.

Under old papers.

Under receipts.

I found a key.

Mark whispered:

“Sarah, don’t.””

I unlocked the cabinet.

Inside were folders.

Lots of them.

My hands started shaking.

The first folder had Noah’s name.

I opened it.

Inside were printed emails.

Letters.

Photos.

Every birthday card Jason had sent.

Every message.

Every attempt.

All organized.

All hidden.

Noah reached for one.

His hands trembled.

“He kept them.””

I looked at Mark.

“You kept everything.””

He looked down.

“I couldn’t throw them away.””

That almost made me angry enough to break.

“You couldn’t throw them away?””

My voice cracked.

“But you could keep them from him?””

Mark had tears in his eyes.

“I didn’t know how to fix it.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You knew exactly what you were doing.””

At the bottom of the cabinet was another folder.

Different from the others.

No name.

No label.

Just a date.

The date Jason supposedly left.

I opened it.

Inside was a handwritten note.

Not from Jason.

Not from Claire.

From Mark.

I read the first line.

*If Sarah believes Jason abandoned Noah, she will finally stop waiting for him.*

My breath disappeared.

Noah looked over my shoulder.

He read it too.

His face changed.

Jason closed his eyes.

Mark whispered:

“Sarah…”

I stepped back.

The note fell from my hand.

“You planned this.””

“No.””

“You wrote it.””

“I was angry.””

“You planned my son’s pain.””

Mark shook his head.

“I never wanted to hurt Noah.””

But Noah interrupted.

“You just wanted to hurt my dad.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Jason found something else.

A small envelope hidden behind the folder.

He pulled it out.

His expression changed.

“What is it?””

He handed it to me.

My name was written on the front.

My handwriting.

Not Mark’s.

Not Jason’s.

Mine.

I opened it.

Inside was a letter I had written nine years ago.

A letter I never sent.

A letter I wrote after Jason left.

The first sentence made my blood run cold.

*Jason, I know Mark told you I don’t want you near Noah, but that isn’t true.*

I looked up.

Mark went completely still.

Because suddenly we knew.

May you like

There was another secret.

A secret even Mark had tried to bury.
