Chapter 4: The Father At The Door

Jason stood on my doorstep like a ghost from a life I thought had ended.

For a moment, nobody moved.

The man I had spent nine years blaming was standing in front of me, older, tired, and carrying the weight of a thousand unanswered questions.

Behind him, the morning sun barely broke through the gray clouds.

Behind me, the man I married stood frozen.

“Sarah,” Jason said softly.

Hearing my name from his mouth felt strange.

Familiar.

Painful.

I gripped the door tighter.

“I don’t know what to believe anymore.””

Jason nodded slowly.

“I know.””

His eyes moved toward Noah.

And the second he saw him, his expression broke.

Noah didn’t move.

He just stared.

Sixteen years old.

Too old to be a little boy.

Too young to carry this much pain.

Jason swallowed.

“Noah…”

My son’s face tightened.

“You knew where we were?””

The question hit harder than anger.

Jason looked down.

“No.””

“Then how did you find me?””

Jason reached into his jacket and pulled out a small folder.

“I didn’t.””

He looked at Mark.

“He did.””

The silence that followed felt heavier than anything before.

Mark stepped forward.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Jason’s eyes hardened.

“You still do that.””

“Do what?”” Mark snapped.

“Pretend you’re protecting people when you’re only protecting yourself.””

I looked at my husband.

“Mark.””

He stopped.

Jason opened the folder.

Inside were printed emails, returned envelopes, and copies of documents.

“I spent years trying to contact Sarah.””

He looked at me.

“I called the old number. I wrote letters. I visited your old apartment.””

My stomach twisted.

“We moved because I thought you disappeared.””

Jason shook his head.

“No.””

He pointed at the papers.

“You moved because Mark told you I was gone.””

Mark’s face turned red.

“That’s a lie.””

Jason laughed quietly.

“A lie?””

He pulled out a document.

“Then explain this.””

I took it from him.

It was a forwarding request.

My old address.

My new address.

And a signature.

My hands went cold.

It was Mark’s handwriting.

The same handwriting I saw every day.

The same handwriting I trusted.

“You changed my mail?””

Mark immediately stepped closer.

“Sarah, wait.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“You changed my mail?””

His silence answered me.

Noah stepped beside Jason.

“You knew.””

Mark looked at him.

“I was trying to keep you safe.””

Noah’s eyes filled with anger.

“From my dad?””

Jason looked away.

And that hurt more than anything.

Because even after everything…

he still looked like someone who had lost years he could never get back.

I turned to Jason.

“Why didn’t you come yourself?””

Jason took a deep breath.

“Because every time I tried, something happened.””

“What does that mean?””

He looked at Mark.

“It means every door closed.””

Mark shook his head.

“You’re making yourself the victim.””

Jason’s jaw tightened.

“No. I’m telling Sarah the truth.””

He pulled out another paper.

“This is the police report from nine years ago.””

My heart jumped.

“A police report?””

Jason nodded.

“The night I came to see Noah.””

I stared at him.

“You came?””

“Yes.””

My breath caught.

“I waited outside your apartment for three hours.””

“Why didn’t you knock?””

Jason’s eyes became full of regret.

“Because someone called the police.””

The room went silent.

My eyes slowly moved toward Mark.

He looked away.

Noah whispered.

“You called them?””

Mark said nothing.

“You told everyone Dad was dangerous?””

Mark finally snapped.

“I was trying to protect you!””

“No,” Noah said.

His voice was shaking.

“You were trying to erase him.””

The words landed like a final blow.

Mark looked at me.

“Sarah, please.””

But I couldn’t look at him the same way anymore.

Not after learning that every memory I had built with him was sitting on top of a secret.

Jason stepped back.

“I didn’t come here to destroy your family.””

He looked at Noah.

“I came because my son deserved the truth.””

Then he reached into the folder one more time.

“There’s one thing I never told you.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Jason looked directly at Mark.

“The letters weren’t the only things he returned.””

My stomach dropped.

“What else?””

Jason slowly placed another envelope in my hand.

“This one was sent by the court.””

I stared at the envelope.

“Court?””

Jason nodded.

“Because nine years ago, I was fighting for custody.””

May you like

The air left my lungs.

“And someone made sure you never knew.””
