Chapter 10: The Woman Who Made The Call
The room went silent after Claire said those words.
It was like time stopped.
Everyone heard it.
Mark.
Noah.
Jason.
And me.
“It was me.””
I held the phone tighter.
My first thought wasn’t anger.
It was confusion.
Because for nine years, I had believed there was one person who destroyed my family.
Mark.
But now another name had entered the story.
His sister.
“Why?”” I whispered.
Claire’s breathing trembled on the other end.
“I need you to hear everything before you judge me.””
I looked at Mark.
His face had lost all color.
“You knew she would call.””
He didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“Mark.””
He closed his eyes.
“I didn’t know.””
Jason stepped closer.
“Ask him why he looks terrified.””
Mark turned toward him.
“Stay out of this.””
“No.””
Jason’s voice was calm.
“Not anymore.””
I walked away from both of them and focused on the phone.
“Claire, start talking.””
A long pause followed.
Then she said:
“The night Jason came to your apartment, Mark called me.””
My stomach tightened.
“What did he say?””
“He said Jason was threatening him.””
Jason immediately shook his head.
“That’s not true.””
Claire continued.
“I believed him.””
I closed my eyes.
Another person.
Another lie.
“So you called the police?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Her voice cracked.
“Because Mark told me Jason was dangerous.””
I looked at Mark.
He looked down.
“You told your sister that?””
He swallowed.
“I was scared.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You were building a story.””
Mark didn’t respond.
Claire continued.
“But when the police arrived, I realized something was wrong.””
“What?””
“Jason wasn’t attacking anyone.””
The words hit hard.
Claire took a breath.
“He was standing outside the building. He was crying.””
Jason looked away.
I noticed.
He remembered.
“He kept saying one thing,” Claire whispered.
“What?””
“He said, ‘I just want to see my son.’”
Nobody moved.
Noah lowered his head.
Claire continued.
“I knew I had made a mistake.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
The silence lasted several seconds.
“Because Mark begged me not to.””
My chest tightened.
“Begged?””
“He said if you knew, you would leave him.””
I looked at Mark.
Again.
The same reason.
The same selfish fear.
“Claire,” I said quietly, “you watched me believe my son’s father abandoned him.””
“I know.””
“You watched Noah grow up thinking he wasn’t wanted.””
“I know.””
Her voice broke.
“I was wrong.””
I wanted to forgive her.
But forgiveness wasn’t something I could hand out that easily.
Not after nine years.
“Why are you telling me now?””
Another pause.
Then Claire said:
“Because Mark is still lying.””
Everyone looked at him.
Mark stepped forward.
“What are you talking about?””
Claire ignored him.
“He never told you the whole reason Jason left that night.””
My heart started racing.
“What reason?””
Claire whispered:
“Because Mark showed him something.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“A document.””
Jason’s expression changed.
“What document?””
Claire answered:
“A paper saying Sarah had already signed away your parental rights.””
The room went cold.
I stared at Mark.
“What?””
Mark shook his head quickly.
“No.””
Claire continued.
“He showed Jason a fake agreement.””
Jason looked stunned.
“He told me Sarah didn’t want me involved.””
My knees weakened.
“He made you believe I chose this?””
Jason nodded.
“Yes.””
I looked at Mark.
The person I had trusted more than anyone.
The person who knew exactly which lies would hurt the most.
“You told him I wanted him gone.””
Mark’s eyes filled.
“I was trying to stop the fighting.””
“No.””
My voice became stronger.
“You were trying to win.””
Mark had no answer.
Claire spoke again.
“There’s one more thing.””
I looked at the phone.
“What?””
“The original documents.””
Jason moved closer.
“What original documents?””
Claire said:
“Mark kept them.””
My heart stopped.
“Where?””
She hesitated.
“In his old office.””
I looked around.
Mark’s face changed instantly.
And that reaction told me everything.
“Sarah…”
I ended the call.
Slowly.

Then I looked at my husband.
“Take me there.””
