Chapter 8: The Man Behind The Lies

Nobody spoke after Jason said the word.

Fake.

It hung in the air.

Heavy.

Impossible.

Mark stared at him.

“You’re lying.””

Jason didn’t react.

“I spent nine years trying to get copies of those documents.””

He pointed at my phone.

“That agreement was never filed.””

I looked at Mark.

“Then what was it?””

Mark’s face changed.

Not confusion.

Not surprise.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Mark?””

He looked at me.

“I can explain.””

I shook my head.

“You always say that.””

He stepped closer.

“Because I can.””

“No.””

I backed away.

“Because every explanation you’ve given me has been another lie.””

Noah watched him silently.

And I realized something painful.

My son wasn’t angry anymore.

He was disappointed.

That was worse.

Mark sat down.

“I was afraid.””

Jason crossed his arms.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

Mark looked at Noah.

“When you came into my life, I finally had something worth fighting for.””

Noah’s eyes narrowed.

“But you fought the wrong person.””

Mark looked down.

“I knew Jason had made mistakes.””

Jason nodded.

“I did.””

“But I thought if he came back, he would take everything away.””

I stared.

“You mean me?””

Mark didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“You didn’t trust me to choose.””

“No.””

His voice was barely audible.

“I didn’t.””

The honesty hurt more than another lie.

Because it meant he had always seen me as someone who could be manipulated.

Jason walked toward the table.

“Where did you get those documents?””

Mark looked up.

“What?””

“The fake custody agreement.””

Mark’s face tightened.

Jason’s eyes narrowed.

“You didn’t create that alone.””

The room changed.

A new fear entered.

“What are you saying?”” I asked.

Jason looked at me.

“I’m saying someone helped him.””

My phone buzzed again.

This time, the message was from an unknown number.

One sentence.

*Stop digging. You already know enough.*

I felt a chill.

Noah saw my expression.

“Mom?””

I handed him the phone.

His face changed.

“Who sent that?””

“I don’t know.””

Jason took the phone.

He studied the number.

Then his expression darkened.

“I know.””

Everyone looked at him.

“Who?””

Jason hesitated.

Then he said:

“Mark’s brother.””

Mark immediately stood.

“Leave him out of this.””

I looked at Mark.

“Your brother?””

Jason nodded.

“He was there that night.””

My heart raced.

“What night?””

“The night I was arrested.””

Mark’s face went pale.

Jason continued.

“He helped create the story.””

I felt sick.

“So there were two people lying to me?””

Mark shook his head.

“No.””

But he didn’t sound convincing.

Jason looked at him.

“You told him to delete the security footage.””

I froze.

“What security footage?””

Mark closed his eyes.

Jason answered.

“The apartment building camera.””

My hands became cold.

“There was footage?””

Jason nodded.

“The camera captured everything that night.””

Noah whispered:

“Everything?””

Jason looked at him.

“Everything.””

I stared at Mark.

“Where is it?””

He didn’t answer.

That was the moment I knew.

Whatever happened that night…

he had spent nine years trying to bury it.

Jason pulled out another folder.

“I found one copy.””

My heart pounded.

“Show me.””

He opened it.

Inside was a small USB drive.

Mark stepped forward.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

He froze.

Then slowly stepped back.

I picked up the drive.

“What’s on it?””

Jason looked at me.

“The truth.””

I walked toward the living room.

My hands were shaking as I opened my laptop.

Noah stood beside me.

Jason stood behind us.

And Mark stayed near the door.

Like he was waiting for an escape.

The video loaded.

The screen flickered.

Then the security footage appeared.

A dark hallway.

A familiar apartment door.

A younger version of myself walking inside.

Then Jason appeared.

My breath stopped.

He wasn’t angry.

He wasn’t shouting.

He looked terrified.

Then another person entered the frame.

Mark.

The younger version of my husband walked toward Jason.

They talked.

I couldn’t hear the audio yet.

Then I saw Jason step back.

And Mark reached into his pocket.

My heart stopped.

May you like

Because whatever happened next…

was the moment my entire life changed.
