Chapter 8: The Man Who Knew Too Much

The next morning, I woke up before sunrise.

I didn’t sleep.

Not really.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the photo of Noah.

I saw Daniel standing too close.

I saw Laura choosing him.

I saw the fake signature.

But now there was something else.

A question.

Who else was involved?

I went downstairs quietly.

Laura was already there.

She sat at the kitchen table holding a cup of coffee she wasn’t drinking.

“You got the message too?”” I asked.

She looked up.

“Yes.””

“Who sent it?””

“I don’t know.””

I sat across from her.

“You said Daniel talked to Noah without me knowing.””

She looked uncomfortable.

“Mark…”

“Tell me.””

She stared at her hands.

“He asked Noah questions.””

“What questions?””

“About you.””

My stomach tightened.

“What kind of questions?””

“Where you keep important papers. Whether you planned to sell the house. Whether you were angry.””

I stood up.

“He was questioning our son?””

“I didn’t know it was happening.””

“You should have known.””

She closed her eyes.

“I know.””

I walked away before I said something I couldn’t take back.

Later that morning, James called.

“We found something.””

I grabbed my jacket.

“What?””

“Your wife’s business records.””

“I thought we already knew about the company.””

“Not everything.””

When I arrived at his office, he placed a folder in front of me.

Inside were financial records.

Transfers.

Emails.

Contracts.

My eyes stopped on one page.

A payment.

$25,000.

From Daniel.

To Ethan.

I looked up.

“Ethan took money from him?””

James shook his head.

“No.””

“Then what is this?””

“Look closer.””

I did.

The payment description read:

*Investigation services.*

I stared.

“Ethan was working against him.””

“Yes.””

A strange mix of relief and confusion hit me.

“Why didn’t he tell us?””

“Because Daniel had already convinced everyone that Laura was leaving you.””

I leaned back.

“He isolated her.””

“Exactly.””

James pointed to another document.

“This is the part that matters.””

I looked down.

It was an email from Daniel.

The recipient was someone named Victor Hale.

I didn’t know the name.

The subject line made my blood run cold.

*Carter Property Acquisition Plan.*

I opened it.

The email was short.

*The husband is resisting. Need additional pressure. Wife remains emotionally attached. Son can be used as leverage if necessary.*

I couldn’t breathe for a second.

My son.

They were talking about my son like he was a tool.

A piece on a chessboard.

I closed the folder.

“We go to the police.””

James nodded.

“We can.””

“But?””

“But we need more.””

I hated hearing that.

More proof.

More waiting.

More danger.

That evening, Laura and I met Ethan at a quiet restaurant.

He looked older than I remembered.

Tired.

Guilty.

When he saw me, he immediately stood.

“Mark.””

I didn’t shake his hand.

“You knew.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

“You knew my wife was involved with him.””

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing.””

His face tightened.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I laughed.

“By letting me walk into a trap?””

“No.””

He leaned forward.

“I needed proof.””

Laura looked at him.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Ethan looked at his sister.

“Because you wouldn’t believe me.””

The silence said everything.

Laura looked away.

Ethan pulled out his phone.

“I found something yesterday.””

“What?””

He placed the phone on the table.

A video.

Security footage.

From the gym.

Daniel talking to another man.

The quality wasn’t perfect.

But the audio was clear.

Daniel said:

“She’ll convince him eventually.””

The other man laughed.

“And if she doesn’t?””

Daniel smiled.

“Then we make sure he has nowhere to go.””

My hands curled into fists.

Laura covered her mouth.

Ethan paused the video.

“There’s more.””

“What?””

He looked at me.

“Daniel never wanted the gym.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“He wanted the house.””

The restaurant suddenly felt too quiet.

“Why?””

Ethan hesitated.

Then he said:

“Because your house isn’t worth $385,000.””

I stared.

“What?””

“It’s worth almost three times that.””

My blood ran cold.

The loan wasn’t the goal.

It was just the beginning.

And then Ethan said the one thing none of us expected.

“Daniel wasn’t planning to take your home.””

May you like

He looked at Laura.

“He was planning to take everything you owned.””
