Chapter 7: The Photograph That Changed Everything
For several seconds, neither Laura nor I moved.
The message on Daniel’s phone wasn’t just a threat.
It was a reminder.
He wasn’t thinking about the house.
He wasn’t thinking about the business.
He was watching us.
And now he was watching Noah.
I stared at the photo.
My son was standing outside his school with his backpack over one shoulder, looking down at something in his hands.
It looked innocent.
A normal moment.
But knowing Daniel had taken it made my stomach turn.
“Where did he get this?”” I asked.
Laura wiped her tears.
“I don’t know.””
“When did he send it?””
She checked the time.
“Ten minutes ago.””
I grabbed my phone.
“I’m calling him.””
“No.””
Her voice stopped me.
I looked at her.
“Why not?””
“Because he’ll know we know.””
I stared at her.
“That’s the point.””
“No, Mark.””
For the first time in days, she sounded afraid of something other than losing money.
“He’s not the kind of person you confront.””
I almost laughed.
“You’re telling me this now?””
Her face dropped.
“I made a mistake.””
I looked at her.
“A mistake?””
She nodded slowly.
“I thought he cared about me.””
The honesty in her voice surprised me.
But it didn’t erase what happened.
“You let him into our family.””
“I know.””
“You let him stand between me and Noah.””
“I know.””
“You watched him hurt me.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I know.””
The room became quiet.
A strange thing happened in that moment.
I still felt betrayed by her.
I still didn’t trust her.
But for the first time, I saw that Laura wasn’t standing beside Daniel anymore.
She was scared of him too.
My phone rang.
I looked at the screen.
Richard.
I answered immediately.
“Did you know about Ethan?””
There was silence.
Then:
“What happened?””
“Daniel was working with him.””
Another pause.
“Mark…”
“Tell me you knew.””
“I didn’t.””
I believed him.
Because his voice sounded different.
Not defensive.
Not careful.
Afraid.
“Richard, Daniel has a picture of Noah.””
The line went silent.
“What kind of picture?””
“A school photo.””
“Mark, listen to me.””
His voice became serious.
“Get Noah somewhere safe.””
I looked toward the stairs.
“He’s upstairs.””
“Don’t let him leave with anyone.””
The words hit me.
“Why?””
“Because I found something.””
“What?””
“I checked Ethan’s business records.””
“And?””
“He wasn’t helping Daniel.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Then what was he doing?””
Richard took a breath.
“He was investigating him.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“Ethan discovered Daniel had done this before.””
My eyes moved to Laura.
“What do you mean?””
“Different women. Different businesses. Same pattern.””
The room seemed to tilt.
“Daniel dates someone connected to money. He convinces them to invest. He creates debt. Then he moves on.””
Laura covered her mouth.
“No…”
I looked at her.
“You didn’t know?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
Richard continued.
“Ethan was trying to collect evidence.””
“Why didn’t he tell us?””
“Because he thought he needed proof.””
I looked at the message again.
*Once Mark signs, the house is ours.*
My anger turned cold.
“He was planning to steal our home.””
“Yes.””
I looked at Laura.
“And your brother knew?””
“He suspected.””
I ended the call.
For a few seconds, the only sound in the room was the clock ticking.
Then Noah walked downstairs.
“Daddy?””
I turned quickly.
“Hey, buddy.””
He looked at Laura.
“Why is Mommy crying?””
Neither of us answered.
I walked over and knelt down.
“Come here.””
He hugged me.
“Are we moving?””
The question broke my heart.
“Why would you ask that?””
He looked at the floor.
“Because Mommy said grown-ups have to make choices.””
I looked at Laura.
Her face changed.
“What did you tell him?””
“I didn’t tell him anything.””
But Noah’s eyes said otherwise.
Children hear everything.
Even when adults whisper.
I held him tighter.
“We’re staying right here.””
“Promise?””
I hesitated.
Then said:
“I promise I’ll do everything I can.””
It wasn’t the same.
But it was the truth.
That night, after Noah fell asleep, Laura and I sat across from each other at the kitchen table.
For the first time in weeks, we weren’t fighting.
We were planning.
“We need evidence,” I said.
She nodded.
“I have Daniel’s messages.””
“Not enough.””
“What else?””
“We need to know exactly what he planned.””
Laura looked at me.
“And how do we do that?””
I opened my laptop.
“There’s one person who can help.””
“Who?””
I turned the screen toward her.
The name appeared in my contacts.
A private investigator James had recommended.
Laura stared.
“You’re really doing this?””
I looked at the stairs where Noah slept.
“Yes.””
Then my phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
A message appeared.
*You should ask your wife why Daniel has been talking to your son without you knowing.*
I looked at Laura.
Her face went pale.
Because the message wasn’t from Daniel.
May you like
It was from someone else.
Someone who knew exactly how to hurt us.
