Chapter 12: The Choice Laura Had to Make

I couldn’t hear anything after that.

Not the television.

Not the traffic outside.

Not even my own breathing.

Laura.

Her name.

On the custody filing.

I slowly lowered the phone.

Everyone looked at me.

“What happened?”” James asked.

I stared at Laura.

“Did you file for custody?””

Her face went blank.

“What?””

“The courthouse just called.””

She stood.

“No.””

“They said your name.””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“Mark, I swear I didn’t.””

Richard stepped forward.

“Laura?””

She looked terrified.

“I would never do that.””

I wanted to believe her.

But a month ago, I would have said the same thing about the loan.

Trust wasn’t rebuilt with words.

It was rebuilt with proof.

James immediately made calls.

Within an hour, we learned what happened.

Someone had submitted the filing using Laura’s information.

Another forgery.

Another attempt to control the situation.

But this time, Daniel had made a mistake.

The filing contained something impossible.

A statement claiming Laura was the primary caregiver.

That she had raised Noah alone.

That I was rarely involved.

I stared at the words.

After twelve years of marriage.

After thousands of nights reading bedtime stories.

After every school meeting.

Every doctor appointment.

Every scraped knee.

Daniel had tried to erase me.

Laura looked at the document.

Then she started crying.

“He wrote this.””

I looked at her.

“How do you know?””

“Because I recognize his words.””

She touched the page.

“He always said you were too attached to Noah.””

My anger returned.

“He said that?””

She nodded.

“He said children need the parent who can give them a better life.””

I laughed bitterly.

“A better life.””

A life without me.

That was the plan.

Destroy my reputation.

Take my house.

Take my son.

Leave me with nothing.

That night, Laura made a decision.

A decision I never expected.

She called Daniel.

I watched her hold the phone.

“Put it on speaker,” James whispered.

She nodded.

The call connected.

Daniel answered immediately.

“Laura.””

His voice sounded confident.

Like he had already won.

“Did you get the documents?””

Laura looked at me.

“Yes.””

“Good.””

Silence.

Then she said:

“You lied to me.””

A pause.

“What are you talking about?””

“You never loved me.””

Daniel laughed softly.

“Laura.””

“You used me.””

His tone changed.

Cold.

“You’re emotional.””

“No.””

Her voice became stronger.

“I’m finally thinking clearly.””

I watched her.

The woman who had betrayed me was now confronting the person who manipulated her.

Daniel sighed.

“You know what happens if you walk away.””

“Yes.””

“You lose everything.””

Laura looked at me.

Then toward the stairs.

Toward Noah.

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“But my son keeps his father.””

The line went silent.

Then Daniel said:

“You really think Mark will forgive you?””

Nobody spoke.

Because it was the question none of us had an answer for.

Laura closed her eyes.

“Maybe he won’t.””

A tear fell down her cheek.

“But I won’t let you hurt him anymore.””

Daniel’s voice became angry.

“You’re making a mistake.””

“No.””

She looked at the phone.

“You did.””

Then she ended the call.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then James’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

“What?””

We all looked at him.

He slowly stood.

“The police found Daniel.””

My heart started pounding.

“What happened?””

James looked at Laura.

“He was arrested.””

A strange silence filled the room.

But before anyone could celebrate, James added:

“They found something in his car.””

“What?””

He looked at me.

“A folder.””

My stomach tightened.

“What was inside?””

James opened the message he received.

Then he said:

“Everything Daniel planned to do after he took your house.””

May you like

And there was one document inside that folder none of us expected.

A document with Noah’s name at the top.
