Chapter 14: The Person We Never Suspected

The next morning, we discovered the worst part.

Daniel was never working alone.

James had traced the documents.

The fake signatures.

The financial transfers.

The property filings.

Someone had been helping him from inside our circle.

Someone close enough to know everything.

“Who?”” I asked.

James placed a folder on the table.

“We’re still confirming.””

I opened it.

The first page showed account transfers.

Small amounts.

Thousands of dollars.

Sent over several months.

The recipient name was hidden behind a company.

But the address was familiar.

I looked closer.

Then my heart dropped.

“No.””

Laura leaned over.

“What?””

I pointed.

“This address.””

She read it.

Her face changed.

“That’s…”

“My old accountant’s office.””

Silence.

My accountant.

The man who handled my taxes.

The man who knew my finances.

The man who knew exactly how much our house was worth.

James nodded.

“His name is Martin Wells.””

I felt betrayed all over again.

Another person.

Another secret.

Another person who had access to my life.

“We need to talk to him.””

We found Martin that afternoon.

He looked nervous the second he saw us.

That told me everything.

“Mark.””

I sat across from him.

“Why did you help Daniel?””

His face changed.

“I didn’t.””

James placed the documents on the table.

“Your company received payments.””

Martin looked down.

“I was pressured.””

“By who?””

He didn’t answer.

“Martin.””

He sighed.

“Daniel knew about my financial problems.””

I stared.

Another person.

Another weakness.

Another person Daniel controlled.

“He threatened me.””

“With what?””

“My family.””

Laura looked disgusted.

“So you helped him destroy ours?””

Martin looked ashamed.

“I didn’t know how far he would go.””

I leaned forward.

“You helped fake my signature.””

“I only prepared documents.””

“That’s enough.””

He lowered his head.

Then he said something unexpected.

“Daniel wasn’t the biggest threat.””

Everyone became silent.

“What?””

Martin looked at Laura.

“He wasn’t supposed to take your house.””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“He wanted something bigger.””

“What?””

Martin swallowed.

“He wanted access to your father’s company.””

I looked at Richard.

“What?””

Richard went pale.

“My company?””

Martin nodded.

“Daniel discovered your father had invested in several properties.””

Richard stood.

“How did he know that?””

Martin looked away.

“Laura told him.””

The room went silent.

I looked at my wife.

“Laura?””

She immediately shook her head.

“No.””

Martin looked at her.

“You told him about your family’s assets.””

Laura’s eyes filled with tears.

“I told him things because I trusted him.””

“But he collected everything.””

She looked broken.

And I realized Daniel’s plan was much bigger.

He wasn’t after one house.

He was building a network.

Using people.

Using secrets.

Using love.

That evening, Laura sat alone in the backyard.

I found her there.

“I didn’t know.””

I sat beside her.

“I know.””

She looked at me.

“No, Mark.””

Her voice cracked.

“I need you to understand.””

She wiped her eyes.

“I didn’t just hurt you.””

She looked toward the house.

“I put Noah in danger.””

I didn’t answer.

Because she was right.

After a while, she whispered:

“Do you hate me?””

The question surprised me.

I looked at her.

“I hated what you did.””

She looked down.

“But not you?””

I thought about it.

The answer wasn’t simple.

“No.””

She cried quietly.

“I don’t deserve that.””

Maybe she didn’t.

But Noah deserved parents who could heal.

Not parents who stayed broken.

Then my phone rang.

James.

Again.

I answered.

“Mark.””

His voice was different.

“Daniel made bail.””

I stood immediately.

“What?””

“He had help.””

“Who?””

A pause.

Then:

“The person who paid his bail used an account connected to your family.””

My blood ran cold.

“What family member?””

James hesitated.

Then said:

“Your wife.””

I looked at Laura.

She was staring at me.

Confused.

Terrified.

Because she knew one thing.

She didn’t pay anything.

Which meant someone had used her identity again.

And this time…

May you like

They weren’t trying to steal our money.

They were trying to make us destroy each other.
