Chapter 3: The Signature That Wasn't Mine
I stared at the screen until my eyes hurt.
The signature looked like mine.
That was the terrifying part.
Someone hadn’t simply written my name.
Someone had studied it.
The curve of the M.
The way I crossed the t.
The small line I always added at the end without thinking.
It was close enough to fool a stranger.
But I knew my own handwriting.
And I knew I had never signed that paper.
I printed the document and placed it on the kitchen table.
When Laura came home that evening, she saw it immediately.
Her face changed.
Not surprise.
Fear.
“You found it,” she said.
I stood there silently.
The fact that she wasn’t asking what I found told me everything.
“How long?””
She put her bag down.
“Mark—”
“How long have you been planning this?””
She looked toward the stairs.
“Noah is home.””
“He’s upstairs. Answer me.””
Laura sighed.
“Months.””
The word hit harder than I expected.
Months.
Not days.
Not one terrible decision.
Months of conversations I wasn’t part of.
Months of plans that involved my house.
My money.
My future.
“Did Daniel help you fake my signature?””
She looked away.
“That’s not what happened.””
“Then tell me what happened.””
She was quiet.
Finally, she whispered:
“I signed for you.””
I felt like the floor moved beneath me.
“You signed for me?””
“I knew you wouldn’t understand.””
“So you committed fraud because I wouldn’t agree?””
Her eyes narrowed.
“You always say no to risks.””
“Because risks involving losing our home are usually bad ideas.””
“You never supported my dreams.””
I shook my head.
“I supported every dream you told me about.””
“No. You supported the safe ones.””
I looked at her.
“Laura, you weren’t building a business with a partner. You were building a new life.””
Her silence confirmed it.
Then footsteps came from upstairs.
Noah appeared at the top of the stairs holding his stuffed dinosaur.
“Mom?””
Laura immediately changed her expression.
“Hey, sweetheart.””
Noah looked between us.
“Are you and Daddy fighting again?””
Again.
That word hurt.
Because children notice everything.
Even when adults think they hide it.
I walked over and knelt down.
“No, buddy.””
Noah looked at the papers on the table.
“Is our house okay?””
I froze.
He understood more than I wanted him to.
Laura quickly stepped forward.
“Of course it is.””
But Noah looked at me.
Kids know when adults are lying.
I forced a smile.
“Go back upstairs, buddy. I’ll come read your bedtime story.””
He nodded slowly.
Before he left, he looked at Laura.
“Mommy?””
“Yes?””
“Why did you let Daniel yell at Daddy?””
Laura’s face went pale.
She didn’t answer.
Noah walked away.
And for the first time, Laura looked ashamed.
But it disappeared quickly.
“I never wanted him involved.””
“He was already involved.””
She sat down.
“Mark, I need you to understand something.””
“What?””
“Daniel and I have investors waiting.””
I stared.
“You still care about the business?””
“Yes.””
“More than your marriage?””
She looked down.
“I think our marriage has been over for a while.””
I swallowed.
The strange thing was, hearing it out loud hurt less than seeing her choose him.
Because at least now the truth had a voice.
“What happens if I don’t sign?””
Her expression changed.
The calm disappeared.
“Then everything falls apart.””
“What everything?””
She didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“Laura.””
She finally looked at me.
“The gym lease. The business contracts. The money Daniel put in.””
There it was.
The missing piece.
Daniel wasn’t just her trainer.
He had invested in this.
He needed my house.
He needed my signature.
And suddenly, the kiss in the gym looked different.
It wasn’t just betrayal.
It was a transaction.
That night, after everyone was asleep, I opened the documents again.
There was one page I hadn’t noticed before.
A page listing the company’s emergency contacts.
My eyes moved down the list.
Then stopped.
Because beneath Laura’s name and Daniel’s name was a third contact.
Someone I knew.
Someone who had no reason to be involved.
My father-in-law.
I picked up my phone and stared at his number.
Then a message appeared before I could call.
It was from him.
May you like
One sentence.
*Mark, we need to talk before Laura and Daniel find out I warned you.*
