Chapter 6: The Secret Behind Daniel’s Smile

Laura didn’t sit back down.

She just stood there.

Frozen.

The confident woman who walked into the coffee shop ready to convince me to sign away my rights was gone.

For the first time in weeks, she looked scared.

“What happened?”” I asked.

She shook her head.

“It’s nothing.””

I almost laughed.

“Nothing?””

She grabbed her purse.

“I have to go.””

I stepped in front of her.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“What?””

“You don’t get to run every time the truth shows up.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“Move.””

“No.””

People at nearby tables started looking over.

Normally, I would have cared.

Normally, I would have lowered my voice.

But I was tired of protecting everyone’s comfort except my own.

“Tell me what Daniel said.””

Laura looked away.

“I can’t.””

That answer told me more than anything.

“You can’t?””

She swallowed.

“Not here.””

“Then where?””

She hesitated.

“Your house.””

I stared at her.

“Our house.””

She looked uncomfortable.

“Yes.””

The drive home was silent.

Neither of us spoke.

When we arrived, Noah was sitting on the living room floor drawing.

He looked up.

“Mommy?””

Laura smiled.

But it looked forced.

“Hey, sweetheart.””

Noah held up his drawing.

“It’s our family.””

I looked down.

There were four people.

Me.

Laura.

Noah.

And Daniel.

My heart sank.

“Who is that?”” I asked softly.

Noah looked confused.

“Daniel.””

Laura immediately looked away.

“He said he could teach me basketball.””

I felt something inside me break.

Not because of the drawing.

Because Daniel had already started entering my son’s world.

While I was still trying to understand how he entered my marriage.

“Noah,” I said gently, “why don’t you go upstairs and put your drawing in your room?””

He nodded.

After he left, I turned to Laura.

“How long has he been around Noah?””

She didn’t answer.

“How long?””

“A few weeks.””

I closed my eyes.

A few weeks.

She had brought another man into my son’s life while I was still living in the same house.

Then she whispered:

“Daniel found something.””

“What?””

She sat down.

“He found out the loan company noticed irregularities.””

“So?””

“So they started investigating.””

I waited.

“And?””

Her hands trembled.

“They discovered the signature issue.””

I stared.

“That’s what you’re afraid of?””

She looked at me.

“No.””

The room went quiet.

“Then what?””

Laura took a deep breath.

“Daniel wasn’t the one who submitted the paperwork.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What?””

“He said someone else handled it.””

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

“Laura.””

Her eyes filled with fear.

“My brother.””

I froze.

“What?””

“My brother Ethan helped prepare the documents.””

I knew Ethan.

Her older brother.

The person who had spent years telling me I was “like family.””

The person who came to our house for holidays.

The person who held Noah when he was born.

I felt sick.

“Your family knew?””

“No.””

“You just said Ethan helped.””

“He thought it was just paperwork.””

“That doesn’t make sense.””

Laura looked down.

Then she whispered:

“Because Ethan wasn’t helping Daniel.””

I stared at her.

“What are you saying?””

She looked toward the front door.

Like she was afraid someone might be listening.

Then she said:

“Daniel has been lying to me too.””

The words hung there.

For the first time since this nightmare began, Laura wasn’t defending him.

She was afraid of him.

“What did you find out?””

She opened her phone.

Her fingers shook as she pulled up a message.

“I found this on Daniel’s tablet.””

She handed it to me.

It was a conversation.

Between Daniel and someone named Ethan.

My eyes moved across the screen.

And then I saw the message that made my entire body go cold.

*Once Mark signs, the house is ours. Laura doesn’t need to know the whole plan.*

I looked at Laura.

She was crying now.

And for the first time in a long time, we were both looking at the same enemy.

But before I could say anything, another message appeared.

A new one.

From Daniel.

*I know Mark saw the documents. It’s time to move faster.*
