Chapter 10: The Name They Tried to Steal
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
“My son’s name?””
I gripped the phone tighter.
“What do you mean his name was used?””
James didn’t answer immediately.
That silence terrified me more than the words.
“Mark, I need you to come here.””
“I need an answer now.””
Another pause.
“The application included a family trust document.””
I frowned.
“A trust?””
“Yes.””
“I never created a trust.””
“I know.””
I looked toward the hallway.
Noah’s bedroom door was closed.
My son was asleep.
Safe.
At least I hoped he was.
“What does the trust say?””
James lowered his voice.
“That Noah would become the beneficiary of the property after certain conditions were met.””
I didn’t understand.
“Why would that matter?””
“Because the conditions were written so that Laura would control the property.””
My stomach dropped.
“So they weren’t just taking my house.””
“No.””
James exhaled.
“They were creating a legal path to control your assets through your son.””
I felt anger rush through me.
Cold.
Heavy.
The kind of anger that didn’t make you shout.
The kind that made you very quiet.
“Who signed it?””
“That’s what we’re trying to determine.””
I looked at Laura.
She was sitting across the room.
Watching my face.
She already knew something was wrong.
“James.””
“Yes?””
“Send me everything.””
“I already did.””
The email arrived seconds later.
I opened it.
The documents loaded one by one.
Loan application.
Business agreement.
Trust paperwork.
Then I saw it.
A signature line.
*Guardian Consent.*
Below it was Laura’s name.
And underneath…
A forged signature pretending to be mine.
I felt sick.
They had used my identity.
They had used my house.
Now they were using my child.
Laura saw my expression.
“What is it?””
I turned the laptop toward her.
She read the page.
The color disappeared from her face.
“No.””
I watched her.
“Did you know about this?””
She shook her head immediately.
“No.””
“Laura.””
“I swear.””
Her voice cracked.
“I knew about the loan. I knew about the business. I didn’t know about this.””
I wanted to believe her.
I really did.
But trust was a bridge she had burned herself.
“Then why was your name on it?””
She covered her mouth.
“I don’t know.””
The front door suddenly opened.
Both of us froze.
Richard walked in.
He looked exhausted.
“I got your message.””
I stood.
“You knew about the trust?””
His face changed.
A terrible answer before he even spoke.
“I found out today.””
I stared at him.
“And you still didn’t tell us?””
“I was trying to confirm it.””
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
My voice rose.
“Everyone keeps protecting information while my son is being dragged into this.””
Richard looked down.
“You’re right.””
That surprised me.
No excuses.
No defense.
Just guilt.
“I failed both of you.””
Laura looked at her father.
“What do you mean?””
Richard sat down.
“Daniel contacted me six weeks ago.””
The room went silent.
“What?””
“He wanted my help convincing you to sign.””
I stared.
“And what did you say?””
“I refused.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because he threatened me.””
Laura stepped forward.
“Threatened you how?””
Richard looked at his daughter.
“He said if I interfered, he would tell you things about your past.””
Laura froze.
“What things?””
Richard looked away.
That reaction told me there was another secret.
Another hidden piece.
“Laura.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice was barely audible.
“Dad.””
He looked at her.
“I’m sorry.””
I watched them.
“What aren’t you telling me?””
Neither answered.
Then Noah appeared at the top of the stairs.
“Daddy?””
We all turned.
His small face looked confused.
“Why is everyone here?””
Immediately, we changed.
Adults are good at pretending.
Even when everything is falling apart.
I walked over.
“Hey buddy.””
He looked at Richard.
“Grandpa?””
Richard smiled weakly.
“Hey, champ.””
Noah looked at us.
“Are we okay?””
That question destroyed me.
Because a child should never have to ask that.
I knelt down.
“Yes.””
He studied my face.
“Really?””
I forced myself to smile.
“Really.””
After he went back upstairs, Laura whispered:
“My past.””
I looked at her.
“What did your father mean?””
She sat down slowly.
“There’s something I never told you.””
I felt the familiar weight return.
Another secret.
Another hidden truth.
“What?””
She looked at the floor.
“Before I met you…”
She stopped.
Then continued.
“I had financial problems.””
I waited.
“How bad?””
She looked up.
“Bad enough that Daniel found out.””
The room became silent.
And suddenly, I understood.
Daniel hadn’t discovered Laura by accident.
He had searched for her.
He had found her weakness.
And he had used it.
But before Laura could explain more, Richard’s phone rang.
He answered.
Then his face changed.
“What?””
We all looked at him.
He slowly lowered the phone.
“Daniel knows about Ethan.””
My heart sank.
“What happened?””
Richard looked at me.
“He sent a message.””
“What did it say?””
Richard swallowed.
May you like
Then he read it.
*Tell Mark to enjoy his last night in that house. Tomorrow, everything changes.*
