Chapter 8: The Secret Before Emma

I stared at the envelope.

It sat on the desk between us.

Small.

Ordinary.

But somehow it felt heavier than anything else in that room.

“What is that?”” I asked.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

She didn’t move.

“Answer him,” Marcus said.

Vanessa’s voice was barely audible.

“It’s nothing.””

I looked at Marcus.

Then back at her.

“Why does everyone keep saying that?””

Nobody answered.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a hospital record.

The name at the top caught my attention.

*Vanessa Carter.*

The date was eight years ago.

Before Emma was born.

I read the first page.

Then the second.

My hands went cold.

“What is this?””

Vanessa finally spoke.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

I looked up.

“Let me understand.””

My voice shook.

“Before we had Emma, you were in the hospital?””

She looked down.

“Yes.””

“For what?””

Silence.

Then Marcus answered.

“She had another baby.””

The room stopped.

I looked at Vanessa.

“What?””

She started crying.

“Daniel, please.””

“No.””

I stepped back.

“No, you don’t get to say please.””

My mind was trying to catch up.

Another baby.

A child I knew nothing about.

“Where is the baby?””

Vanessa covered her face.

“I lost him.””

The words hung in the air.

I stared at her.

“You lost him?””

She nodded.

“It was years ago.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Her tears fell.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

“That you would leave.””

I looked at her.

“I would have stayed.””

She shook her head.

“You don’t know that.””

“Yes, I do.””

My voice broke.

“Because I loved you.””

Marcus looked away.

I realized then he wasn’t just a stranger.

He was someone who had been carrying this secret too.

“Who are you to her?”” I asked.

Marcus was quiet.

Then:

“I was her therapist.””

I froze.

Vanessa looked up.

“Marcus.””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“You deserve the truth.””

My chest tightened.

“You were her therapist?””

“Yes.””

“And now you’re in my house?””

“I stopped being her therapist years ago.””

“Then why are you here?””

He looked toward the laptop.

“Because after therapy ended, I realized something was wrong.””

Vanessa wiped her tears.

“You’re destroying everything.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No, Vanessa.””

His voice was gentle.

“You did that yourself.””

I looked at the documents again.

“What happened after the baby?””

Vanessa sat down.

Her shoulders collapsed.

“I couldn’t handle it.””

The anger inside me fought with something else.

Pain.

Because I had never seen my wife look this broken.

“I blamed myself.””

She continued.

“I couldn’t sleep. I couldn’t eat. I couldn’t accept that I lost him.””

“And then?””

She looked at me.

“Then Emma was born.””

The room became silent.

“She saved me.””

Her voice softened.

“She was the only thing that made me feel alive again.””

I frowned.

“Then why did you treat her like this?””

Vanessa started crying harder.

“I don’t know.””

That answer wasn’t enough.

It would never be enough.

Marcus spoke quietly.

“Vanessa became obsessed with controlling everything.””

I looked at him.

“What do you mean?””

“She believed if she controlled every detail, nothing bad would happen again.””

I thought about the locked pantry.

The food.

The schedules.

The hidden room.

The videos.

Control.

That was the word.

But control didn’t feel like love.

It felt like fear wearing a mask.

I closed the folder.

“Where is Emma’s birth certificate?””

Vanessa looked confused.

“Why?””

“Because I want to see it.””

“Daniel—”

“Now.””

She hesitated.

Then walked to a cabinet in the basement.

She pulled out a box.

Inside were old documents.

Photos.

Medical records.

I searched through them.

Then I found it.

Emma’s birth certificate.

I looked at the name.

The date.

Everything seemed normal.

Until I saw something else.

A handwritten note attached to the back.

I removed it carefully.

Only four words were written.

My heart stopped.

Because the handwriting wasn’t Vanessa’s.

May you like

It said:

*“She knows about him.””*
