Chapter 13: The Message From Noah

The video kept playing.

But I couldn’t move.

The boy on the screen wasn’t much older than a teenager.

Yet his eyes carried years of things no child should have carried.

Pain.

Confusion.

A need to be heard.

Emma stood beside me, holding her stuffed bear.

“Daddy…”

I looked down.

“Yes?””

“Is that Noah?””

I swallowed.

“Yes.””

She stared at the screen.

“My brother?””

I nodded.

Her face changed.

Not fear.

Not anger.

Curiosity.

A child trying to understand something adults had made complicated.

The video continued.

Noah looked directly at the camera.

“Emma, I don’t know if you’re going to see this.””

He paused.

“I almost didn’t make it.””

My heart tightened.

“I almost left without saying anything.””

He looked down.

“But then I saw you.””

Emma moved closer to the phone.

“I saw you sitting on the floor with the dog.””

My breath stopped.

“She told me she loved you.””

Noah’s voice cracked.

“But I’ve heard those words before.””

The room became silent.

“Mom loved me too.””

A pause.

“But sometimes love can hurt when someone doesn’t know how to handle their own pain.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She was crying quietly.

Noah continued.

“I wanted to hate her.””

His eyes moved away.

“I really did.””

“But when I saw you…”

He took a shaky breath.

“I remembered being six.””

Emma covered her mouth.

“Noah…”

She whispered his name.

Like she already felt connected to him.

“I know you’re probably confused.””

The boy on the screen smiled sadly.

“But none of this is your fault.””

Emma looked at me.

Then back at the phone.

Noah continued.

“Mom will probably tell you she was scared.””

He paused.

“And she was.””

“Mom was scared of losing people.””

A tear rolled down his cheek.

“But she never understood that trying to control people makes them leave faster.””

I looked at Vanessa.

For once, she didn’t look angry.

She looked like someone hearing the truth from someone she had hurt.

Noah leaned closer to the camera.

“Daniel…”

My body froze.

He was talking to me now.

“I don’t know if you hate me.””

I shook my head slightly.

I didn’t.

I couldn’t.

“I don’t blame you for not knowing.””

His voice became quieter.

“Mom made sure nobody knew.””

The video stopped.

The room stayed silent.

Then Emma spoke.

“Daddy?””

“Yes?””

“Did he think nobody wanted him?””

I looked at her.

“Yes.””

She looked down.

“Like me?””

That sentence hurt more than anything.

I knelt beside her.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“You are wanted.””

“But he wasn’t?””

I didn’t know how to answer without hurting her.

So I told her the truth.

“He was wanted too.””

Emma looked toward Vanessa.

Then whispered:

“Why did Mommy do that?””

Nobody answered.

Because there was no simple answer.

Later that night, after Emma fell asleep, I sat downstairs with Vanessa.

No anger.

No shouting.

Just exhaustion.

“I need to know where Noah is.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I do too.””

“You haven’t looked?””

“I did.””

“Then where is he?””

She hesitated.

“There’s one place.””

I looked at her.

“Where?””

She took a deep breath.

“The old lake house.””

The place she had never mentioned.

The place hidden behind years of secrets.

“Why would he go there?””

“Because Ethan took him there after the custody case.””

I stood.

“Then we go.””

Vanessa looked surprised.

“You would come with me?””

I stared at her.

“I’m going for Noah.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

The next morning, we drove two hours north.

The lake house was old.

Weathered.

Almost forgotten.

When we arrived, the front door was unlocked.

My hand immediately went to the handle.

“Stay behind me,” I said.

Vanessa looked at me.

“You think he’s dangerous?””

“No.””

I looked inside.

“I think he’s hurt.””

We entered slowly.

Dust covered the furniture.

Old pictures lined the walls.

Then I heard something.

A sound upstairs.

A floorboard creaking.

“Hello?””

No answer.

I climbed the stairs.

At the top was a bedroom.

The door was open.

Inside was a teenage boy sitting by the window.

He turned around.

And I saw his face.

The same eyes from the video.

Noah.

He looked at me.

Then at Vanessa.

And whispered:

“You brought him.””

I stopped.

“Who?””

May you like

Noah looked at me.

“My little sister’s father.””
