Chapter 7: The Stranger In My House

For a few seconds, nobody spoke.

The basement felt smaller.

The air felt heavier.

And the man standing at the top of the stairs looked like he had walked into a nightmare he never expected to see.

Marcus.

I had seen his name on Vanessa’s phone.

I had seen his messages.

But seeing the person behind them was different.

He was younger than me.

Early forties.

Dark hair.

A nervous expression.

The kind of face that looked harmless until you realized he was standing inside a house he had no reason to enter.

I stepped in front of the basement doorway.

“Who are you?””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

Not me.

Her.

That was enough.

“Daniel,” Vanessa said quietly.

I turned toward her.

“No.””

My voice was calm.

Too calm.

“You don’t get to explain this while he stands there.””

Marcus slowly raised his hands.

“Look, I can explain.””

I looked at him.

“You better.””

He swallowed.

“My name is Marcus Reed.””

“I know your name.””

His eyes moved to the desk.

Then the laptop.

Then the folders.

He looked guilty.

Not surprised.

Guilty.

“How long have you been coming here?””

He didn’t answer.

“Marcus.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

I looked at her.

“Don’t what?””

Her eyes filled with fear.

“Don’t do this in front of Emma.””

I froze.

Because she said Emma’s name like she was afraid of something else.

Not just what I knew.

What Emma might hear.

“Where is my daughter?””

“She’s upstairs.””

“Alone?””

Vanessa nodded.

I immediately walked past them.

But Marcus spoke.

“Daniel.””

I stopped.

“What?””

His voice was low.

“You need to know something.””

I turned.

“What could you possibly tell me?””

He looked at Vanessa.

Then back at me.

“The videos weren’t taken to hurt Emma.””

I stared at him.

“Then why were they taken?””

Silence.

Then he said:

“To prove what was happening.””

I laughed once.

A bitter sound.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“No.””

Marcus shook his head.

“I expect you to watch the rest.””

My eyes narrowed.

“The rest?””

Vanessa moved toward the laptop.

“No.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Vanessa, it’s too late.””

That sentence changed everything.

Because it wasn’t a husband and wife argument anymore.

It was two people who knew something I didn’t.

I opened the laptop again.

There were more videos.

Dates.

Times.

Months.

I clicked the newest one.

The screen showed the living room.

Emma was sitting on the floor drawing.

Vanessa walked in.

At first, nothing seemed unusual.

Then Vanessa said something that made my blood run cold.

“You know your father only stays because he feels guilty, right?””

I stopped the video.

I couldn’t breathe.

Marcus looked away.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

I turned slowly.

“Why?””

She didn’t answer.

“Why would you say that to her?””

“I was angry.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“That wasn’t anger.””

I pointed at the screen.

“That was cruelty.””

Vanessa’s face crumpled.

“I didn’t mean it.””

“But you said it.””

She covered her mouth.

For the first time, she looked like she understood what she had done.

Not because I caught her.

Because she finally heard herself.

I looked at Marcus.

“You recorded my family.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His expression changed.

“Because I tried to warn you.””

“When?””

“Several times.””

I frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

He looked at Vanessa.

“She deleted my messages before you saw them.””

My stomach dropped.

The phone.

The messages.

The schedule.

Everything.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Who are you?””

Her face went pale.

“What?””

“Who are you?””

The woman standing in front of me suddenly felt like a stranger.

“You’ve been lying to me.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

I stepped closer.

“You lied about Emma.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You lied about Marcus.””

“Daniel—”

“And you lied about yourself.””

A long silence followed.

Then Marcus spoke.

“Daniel, there’s something else.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He hesitated.

Then said:

“Emma wasn’t the only person Vanessa controlled.””

My heart stopped.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

And placed it on the desk.

“Before you decide what to do next…”

May you like

He looked at Vanessa.

“…you need to know what happened before Emma was born.””
