Chapter 5: The Man Who Knew My Schedule

Vanessa grabbed the phone from the table.

“Daniel, this isn’t what you think.””

I looked at her.

“I’m starting to hate that sentence.””

She turned the screen off.

“Marcus is a friend.””

“A friend who knows when I’m out of town?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Silence.

That silence answered more than words could.

I stepped back.

“How long?””

Vanessa frowned.

“How long what?””

“How long have you been talking to him?””

Her expression changed.

Not shock.

Not confusion.

Calculation.

“I don’t know what you’re accusing me of.””

“I’m asking a question.””

“And I don’t like where this is going.””

I laughed quietly.

“You don’t like where this is going?””

I pointed upstairs.

“Our daughter was eating from a dog bowl.””

Then I pointed at her phone.

“And now there’s a man who knows exactly when I’m supposed to be gone.””

Vanessa’s voice became defensive.

“You’re trying to make two unrelated things connect.””

“Are they unrelated?””

“Yes.””

“Then prove it.””

She stared at me.

For the first time in eight years, I saw someone unfamiliar standing in front of me.

Not my wife.

Someone protecting herself.

“I want to see the messages.””

Her eyes widened.

“No.””

That single word said everything.

I nodded slowly.

“Okay.””

“Daniel—”

“No.””

I held up my hand.

“I don’t need to force anything.””

She looked confused.

“I’m your wife.””

“And I’m your husband.””

The room went quiet.

“But right now,” I continued, “I’m also Emma’s father.””

Vanessa’s face softened slightly.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t get to use our marriage as a reason for me to ignore what happened to her.””

She looked toward the stairs.

“She needs her mother.””

“Yes.””

I nodded.

“She does.””

Then I looked back at her.

“But she also needs someone who believes her.””

That night, I slept in Emma’s room.

Not because I was angry.

Because I didn’t want her to wake up alone.

At 2:17 in the morning, I heard a sound.

A small voice.

“Daddy?””

My eyes opened.

Emma was sitting up.

“What happened?””

She looked scared.

“I had a bad dream.””

I sat up immediately.

“What did you dream?””

She hugged her blanket.

“That you left again.””

My heart broke.

“I’m right here.””

She nodded.

Then she whispered:

“Daddy?””

“Yes?””

“Can I tell you something else?””

I sat beside her.

“Anything.””

She looked toward the bedroom door.

Then lowered her voice.

“Mommy has another room.””

I frowned.

“What room?””

“In the basement.””

I stared at her.

“The basement?””

She nodded.

“She told me never to go there.””

“Why?””

Emma swallowed.

“Because there are things inside.””

I felt a cold feeling move through me.

“What things?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

“Have you seen inside?””

“No.””

“Then how do you know?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because I heard Mommy crying there.””

That caught me off guard.

“Crying?””

Emma nodded.

“Sometimes she talks to someone.””

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

I brushed her hair back.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

She looked down.

“Because Mommy said if you found out, you would leave her.””

I sat there silently.

My wife had spent months teaching my daughter that honesty would destroy our family.

But what was she hiding?

The next morning, I waited until Vanessa left the house.

Then I walked downstairs.

The basement door was locked.

I tried the handle.

Nothing.

I looked around.

Then I noticed something taped underneath the wooden railing.

A small key.

May you like

My hands went still.

Because I knew exactly what it was for.
