Chapter 6: The Room Beneath The House
The key felt cold in my hand.
I stood in front of the basement door for almost a minute.
Not because I was afraid of what was behind it.
Because some part of me already knew.
And I didn’t want to be right.
I unlocked the door.
The basement light flickered when I turned it on.
The stairs creaked beneath my feet.
Each step sounded louder than it should have.
At the bottom was a hallway.
I had lived in this house for five years.
I had walked past this door hundreds of times.
But I had never seen what was behind it.
The door at the end of the hallway was slightly open.
I pushed it.
Inside was a small room.
And my entire body froze.
It wasn’t a storage room.
It wasn’t a guest room.
It was an office.
A hidden office.
There was a desk.
A laptop.
Stacks of papers.
And photographs.
I walked closer.
The first photograph was of me.
Taken outside my office building.
The second was of me getting into my car.
The third was of me boarding a plane.
My stomach turned.
Why was someone photographing me?
I picked up a folder from the desk.
Inside were printed schedules.
My business trips.
My meetings.
My flight times.
Everything.
Someone had been tracking my life.
Then I saw a name written on a document.
*Daniel Carter — Travel History.*
My hands shook.
This wasn’t normal.
This wasn’t a misunderstanding.
Someone had planned around my absence.
I opened the laptop.
No password.
That scared me even more.
The screen showed a folder.
One folder.
Named:
*Emma.*
I clicked it.
Inside were videos.
My heart stopped.
I opened the first one.
The camera angle was from the kitchen.
The date was two months earlier.
Emma was sitting at the table.
Vanessa was standing over her.
I couldn’t hear the beginning.
Then the audio became clear.
“You don’t deserve dinner if you keep lying.””
Emma’s tiny voice answered.
“I’m not lying.””
Vanessa leaned closer.
“You always make yourself the victim.””
I stopped the video.
I couldn’t watch anymore.
My hands were shaking.
Then I heard footsteps upstairs.
Vanessa.
She was home.
I quickly closed the laptop.
But it was too late.
Her voice came from the doorway.
“Daniel.””
I turned around.
She was standing there.
And she wasn’t angry.
She looked terrified.
“You weren’t supposed to find this.””
I stared at her.
“Who is Marcus?””
Her face went pale.
I held up the folder.
“Who has been tracking me?””
She said nothing.
“Why are there videos of Emma?””
Still nothing.
Then she whispered:
“Because you don’t know the truth.””
I took a step forward.
“What truth?””
Vanessa looked at the laptop.
Then at me.
And tears filled her eyes.
“The reason I kept you away…”
She stopped.
Her voice broke.
“Was because I was afraid of what you would discover.””
I stared at her.
“What did I discover?””
She looked toward the stairs.
Toward where Emma was sleeping.
Then she said the words I never expected.
“Emma isn’t the only child I was hiding.””
My blood went cold.
“What?””
Vanessa took a shaky breath.
And before she could continue, the basement door behind her opened.
A man’s voice came from the hallway.
“Vanessa…”
She turned.
I turned.

And standing at the top of the stairs was the man from the messages.
Marcus.
