Chapter 10: The Child Who Was Erased

The paper slipped slightly in my hand.

I read the sentence one more time.

*“Please come get me. Mom said Daddy doesn’t want me.””*

The handwriting was messy.

Small.

Desperate.

Not written by Emma.

A child had written those words.

A child who believed their own father didn’t want them.

I looked at Vanessa.

She was standing in the doorway.

The moment she saw the paper in my hand, all the color disappeared from her face.

“Where did you get that?””

Her voice wasn’t angry.

It was terrified.

I stood slowly.

“Emma found it.””

Vanessa looked at my daughter.

Then back at me.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

I held up the paper.

“You are going to tell me everything.””

Emma watched from the bed.

I immediately softened my voice.

“Sweetheart, can you go get your stuffed bear?””

She looked confused.

“Why?””

“Because Daddy needs to talk to Mommy for a minute.””

Emma looked between us.

Then she nodded and hugged her bear.

Before leaving, she whispered:

“Don’t let her be mad at me.””

Those words followed me even after she walked away.

I turned back to Vanessa.

“She’s afraid of you.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I never wanted that.””

“But it happened.””

She sat down on the edge of the bed.

For the first time, she looked exhausted.

Not defensive.

Not angry.

Just broken.

“The child who wrote that letter…”

I waited.

“His name was Noah.””

The name felt strange in my ears.

A child.

A person.

A life Vanessa had hidden.

“Who was Noah?””

She looked at me.

“He was my son.””

My throat tightened.

“You told me you lost a baby.””

“I did.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You told me you lost him.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I lost custody.””

The room went silent.

“Why?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Because I wasn’t okay.””

I said nothing.

She continued.

“After Noah was born, I changed. I became scared of everything. I thought everyone was trying to take him away from me.””

“Who was his father?””

She hesitated.

Then:

“His name was Ethan.””

I frowned.

“Not you?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

The answer hit me strangely.

Because I realized there were years of Vanessa’s life I knew nothing about.

Years before me.

Years she had buried.

“What happened to Ethan?””

“He left.””

“When?””

“When Noah was three.””

I looked at the paper again.

“Then why would Noah write that you said his father didn’t want him?””

Vanessa covered her face.

“Because I said it.””

My heart sank.

“You told your son that?””

“I was angry.””

“That’s not an excuse.””

“I know.””

Her voice broke.

“I know.””

I looked toward the door where Emma had left.

“You did the same thing to her.””

Vanessa looked up.

“What?””

“You made her believe she was unwanted.””

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“That she would leave me too.””

I stared at her.

“So you hurt her first?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Because she knew.

She had.

A knock came from the hallway.

Marcus appeared.

“Daniel.””

I turned.

“What?””

He held another folder.

“I found this in the basement.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She immediately stood.

“No.””

Marcus ignored her.

“It’s Noah’s file.””

My chest tightened.

I took it.

Inside were court documents.

Reports.

Medical records.

Then one page caught my attention.

A custody evaluation.

I read the first sentence.

*“The child demonstrates signs of emotional distress caused by inconsistent affection and repeated statements of rejection.””*

My hands trembled.

This wasn’t new.

This pattern had existed before Emma.

Before me.

Before our marriage.

Vanessa whispered:

“I thought I could fix it.””

I looked at her.

“You didn’t fix it.””

She nodded slowly.

“I know.””

Downstairs, I heard Emma call my name.

“Daddy?””

I immediately moved toward the stairs.

But before I left, Marcus said:

“There’s something else.””

I stopped.

“What?””

He looked at Vanessa.

“She never told you what happened after Noah disappeared.””

Vanessa went completely still.

I turned back.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus lowered his voice.

“Because Noah wasn’t gone.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

He looked at the folder.

“Your wife didn’t lose her son.””

May you like

A pause.

“She gave him away.””
