Chapter 12: The Brother Emma Never Knew

I stared at Vanessa.

“What does that mean?””

She looked away.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You don’t get to stop now.””

Marcus quietly said:

“There’s more.””

I turned toward him.

“Of course there is.””

He looked at Vanessa.

“You need to tell him.””

Vanessa sat down.

Her hands were shaking.

“When Noah came back, he wasn’t looking for me.””

I frowned.

“Then who?””

She swallowed.

“You.””

I felt confused.

“Why would he look for me?””

“Because he knew about you.””

The room went quiet.

“How?””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“Because I told him.””

I stared.

“You told your son about me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She took a shaky breath.

“Because he wanted to know what kind of person his mother became.””

Those words hurt.

Not because of Noah.

Because I understood what they meant.

Somewhere out there was a boy who had spent years wondering why his mother left.

And he had searched for answers.

“What did he want from me?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“He wanted to meet Emma.””

My heart jumped.

“Why?””

“Because she was his sister.””

I looked toward the hallway.

Toward Emma’s room.

“She knows?””

“No.””

“Then why hide it?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Because Noah blamed me.””

“For what?””

“For ruining his life.””

I nodded slowly.

“And he was right?””

Vanessa cried harder.

“I don’t know.””

That answer made me angry.

“You don’t know?””

“I was young.””

“So was he.””

She looked at me.

“I know.””

For the first time, there was no excuse.

No defense.

Just regret.

I looked at Marcus.

“Where is Noah now?””

He hesitated.

That hesitation scared me.

“Marcus.””

“He left.””

“When?””

“Two weeks ago.””

My stomach tightened.

Two weeks.

That was when I was on my last business trip.

The same time Vanessa said everything at home was fine.

“What happened?””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

She whispered:

“He came here.””

I waited.

“He saw Emma.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Vanessa nodded.

“He saw her eating outside with the dog.””

The room went silent.

I couldn’t breathe.

Noah had seen it.

Someone else had known.

Someone else had watched my daughter suffer.

“What did he do?””

Vanessa covered her face.

“He confronted me.””

“And?””

“He said I was repeating the same mistake.””

Her voice broke.

“He said I lost one child because I pushed him away.””

A tear fell.

“And I was about to lose another.””

I looked at the floor.

Everything suddenly connected.

The videos.

The hidden room.

Marcus watching.

Noah returning.

The secrets.

But one question remained.

“Where is he?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

“Why?””

“He left after we argued.””

“When?””

“The day before you came home.””

I felt cold.

“He was here the day before?””

She nodded.

“He left something.””

“What?””

She stood slowly.

Walked to the basement.

And returned with a small box.

“This.””

I opened it.

Inside was a phone.

An old one.

A note attached.

My hands shook as I read it.

*For Emma.*

I looked at Vanessa.

“Why would he leave this?””

She whispered:

“Because he wanted her to know the truth.””

I turned on the phone.

The screen lit up.

One video.

One message.

One name.

*Noah.*

I pressed play.

The video began.

A teenage boy appeared on the screen.

His eyes looked tired.

But familiar.

And his first words made my heart stop.

“Hi, Emma.””

A pause.

“I’m your brother.””

Then he looked directly into the camera.

May you like

And said:

“Your dad doesn’t know what Mom did to us.””
