Chapter 9: The Man Who Knew Vanessa First

Nobody spoke.

The knock came again.

Harder this time.

“Daniel?””

Vanessa looked like she had seen a ghost.

And maybe she had.

Because the man outside wasn’t supposed to exist.

Not in my life.

Not in my house.

Not in my marriage.

I looked at her.

“You told me you were divorced.””

She couldn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

Her lips trembled.

“He’s lying.””

“Then why are you scared?””

She looked away.

That was enough.

I walked to the door.

Vanessa grabbed my arm.

“Please.””

I looked at her hand.

Then at her face.

“Five years.””

She started crying.

“Daniel…”

“Five years I trusted you.””

I opened the door.

A man stood on the porch.

He was in his late forties.

Tired eyes.

A worn jacket.

And a photograph in his hand.

He looked past me.

Straight at Vanessa.

“You found out.””

Vanessa stepped back.

“Mark.””

The man laughed bitterly.

“You still use that name.””

My stomach tightened.

“What is going on?””

Mark looked at me.

“I’m sorry you had to learn this way.””

“Who are you?””

He handed me the photograph.

“I was married to Vanessa before you.””

I looked at the picture.

It showed a younger Vanessa.

A baby.

And another woman.

Rachel.

My hands shook.

“You knew Rachel?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Mark looked at Vanessa.

“She was the only person who tried to help us.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Stop.””

Mark ignored her.

“She knew my daughter was in danger.””

My chest tightened.

“Your daughter?””

He nodded.

“Her name was Ava.””

The room behind me went silent.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Mark, please.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“You don’t get to hide anymore.””

I stepped outside.

“What happened to Ava?””

Mark looked at me.

“She disappeared.””

“When?””

“Fifteen years ago.””

I felt sick.

The same timeline Sarah mentioned.

“What does this have to do with Rachel?””

Mark looked down.

“Rachel found out Vanessa was lying.””

Vanessa shouted:

“Enough!””

Everyone froze.

It was the first time I had heard fear in her voice.

Not anger.

Fear.

Mark pointed at her.

“She told Rachel that Ava died.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“But she didn’t?””

“No.””

Mark shook his head.

“She gave her away.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“She believed Ava was the reason her life fell apart.””

Vanessa’s face collapsed.

“You don’t understand.””

Mark stepped closer.

“You locked her away from everyone.””

“I was sick.””

“You were cruel.””

I looked back at my house.

At Emma.

At my daughter who had been sitting hungry at a table while I was away working.

My voice was barely a whisper.

“Is that what you did to Emma?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“No.””

But she didn’t sound convincing.

Mark pulled another envelope from his pocket.

“Rachel left this with me.””

My eyes widened.

“Why didn’t you give it to me?””

“Because Vanessa threatened me.””

The silence was immediate.

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked defeated.

“What was in it?””

Mark handed it over.

“Read it.””

I opened the envelope.

Rachel’s handwriting appeared again.

But this time, the first sentence wasn’t about Vanessa.

It was about Emma.

“Daniel, if Vanessa ever tries to take Emma away from you…”

I stopped.

My hands trembled.

The next words made my heart race.

“…it means she has found out that Emma is connected to Ava.””

I looked up.

“What does that mean?””

Nobody answered.

Then Mark whispered:

“Daniel…”

I looked at him.

“She never wanted Emma because she loved her.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Then why?””

Mark looked toward Vanessa.

“Because Emma was the last piece of evidence that could expose what happened to Ava.””

And behind me, from inside the house, Emma suddenly screamed.

“Daddy!””

I turned around.

May you like

Vanessa was gone.

And the front door to the backyard was wide open.
