Chapter 8: The Memory Box

I reached Emma’s room in seconds.

The door was open.

Tyler was standing beside the bed.

Emma was sitting on the floor, crying.

And Vanessa was holding something.

A small wooden box.

The same kind Tyler described.

The same box with Emma’s name on it.

I stopped in the doorway.

Vanessa looked up.

Her face changed.

She knew I had seen it.

“Give me that.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Vanessa.””

“You don’t understand.””

“I’m done hearing that.””

Emma crawled toward me.

“Daddy.””

I picked her up immediately.

She buried her face against my shoulder.

Vanessa looked at her.

And something about that expression made me angry.

Not hatred.

Not rage.

Something worse.

Disappointment.

“You found this box,” I said.

Vanessa looked down.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She didn’t answer.

Tyler stepped forward.

“She was going to take it away.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You don’t know anything.””

Tyler flinched.

I moved between them.

“Stop.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I was trying to protect Emma.””

“From what?””

She looked at the box.

“From the truth.””

I stared at her.

“Open it.””

“No.””

“Open it.””

Her hands shook.

Slowly, she placed the box on the bed.

Then she opened the lid.

Inside were dozens of things.

A hospital bracelet.

Photos.

Letters.

A tiny baby blanket.

And a small recording device.

My breath caught.

Vanessa immediately reached for it.

I grabbed her wrist.

“Don’t.””

She looked at me.

“You don’t want to hear this.””

I released her.

“Play it.””

She didn’t move.

“Play it.””

Tyler pressed the button.

Static filled the room.

Then Rachel’s voice.

Weak.

But unmistakable.

“Daniel…”

My knees almost gave out.

Emma looked up.

“Mommy?””

I held her tighter.

Rachel’s voice continued.

“If you’re hearing this, it means Vanessa couldn’t keep the truth hidden forever.””

Vanessa started crying.

“Stop it.””

Nobody listened.

“I wanted to believe she could change.””

Rachel paused.

“She promised me she would.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“What did she promise?””

The recording continued.

“She promised she would love Emma like her own.””

My chest tightened.

“Rachel knew,” I whispered.

The recording continued.

“But I was wrong.””

The room became silent.

“I saw how Vanessa looked at Emma when nobody was watching.””

Emma’s fingers gripped my shirt.

“She wasn’t looking at my daughter.””

Rachel’s voice shook.

“She was looking at the child she lost.””

Vanessa covered her face.

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

The recording continued.

“Vanessa blamed herself for what happened to her baby.””

A pause.

“She blamed me.””

The room went completely still.

Tyler looked confused.

I looked at Vanessa.

“What happened to your baby?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

The recording did.

“She thinks I took something from her.””

My heart stopped.

Rachel’s voice became softer.

“But I never did.””

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“You don’t know what it’s like to lose a child.””

I stared at her.

“Where is your child?””

She looked at Emma.

And the answer on her face terrified me.

Before she could speak, someone knocked on the front door.

Three slow knocks.

Tyler looked toward the hallway.

“Who is that?””

I didn’t know.

But Vanessa did.

Her face went white.

“No.””

I stepped toward the door.

“Who is it?””

She grabbed my arm.

“Daniel, don’t open that door.””

I pulled away.

“Why?””

Because then the person outside called out:

“Daniel, my name is Mark.””

A pause.

“I’m Vanessa’s husband.””

May you like

My entire body went cold.

Because I was Vanessa’s husband.
