Chapter 5: The Room She Kept Locked

The nursery door had been closed for almost five years.

At first, I thought it was because Vanessa was trying to respect my grief.

After Rachel died, I couldn’t walk past that room without remembering the hospital.

The baby blankets.

Rachel’s tired smile.

The promises we made.

So when Vanessa told me, “Maybe we should leave it alone for a while,” I agreed.

A while became months.

Months became years.

And somehow, I stopped asking why.

Until that night.

I stood in front of the door with the old brass handle.

Vanessa appeared behind me.

“Don’t.””

I slowly turned.

“Why?””

Her face was tense.

“Because there’s nothing in there.””

“Then why won’t you let me open it?””

She didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

I grabbed the handle.

“Daniel.””

I looked at her.

“No more secrets.””

I opened the door.

The smell hit me first.

Dust.

Old fabric.

A room frozen in time.

Emma’s crib was still there.

The little stars Rachel painted on the walls were still there.

But something felt wrong.

The room looked untouched.

Too untouched.

Like someone had preserved it.

Not because they loved it.

Because they were hiding something.

I stepped inside.

Vanessa stayed in the doorway.

“You’re being dramatic.””

I ignored her.

I searched the shelves.

The closet.

The drawers.

Nothing.

Then I noticed the crib.

One of the wooden panels looked different.

I ran my fingers along the edge.

A small gap.

I pushed.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside was a tiny envelope.

My hands shook as I picked it up.

My name was written on the front.

“Daniel.””

Rachel’s handwriting.

Again.

Vanessa moved forward.

“Give me that.””

I stepped back.

“No.””

“Daniel, listen to me.””

“No. I’ve been listening to you for five years.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

This one was longer.

And the first sentence made my chest tighten.

“Daniel, I’m writing this because I’m afraid you won’t believe me when I tell you what I discovered.””

I kept reading.

“Vanessa is not the person she says she is.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She was crying now.

Not angry tears.

Desperate tears.

“Daniel, please.””

I continued.

“After my diagnosis, Vanessa became closer to me. She offered to help with Emma. I wanted to trust her because I was scared and needed support.””

My fingers tightened around the paper.

“But I started noticing things.””

The next paragraph was underlined.

“Emma cried whenever Vanessa held her. She would apologize for things she didn’t do. She became afraid to ask for food.””

I stopped breathing.

The exact words.

The exact nightmare.

Rachel knew.

Before she died, she knew.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“She was sick.””

I looked up.

“She wrote this before she was too sick to think clearly.””

“You don’t get to decide that.””

“She hated me.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“She trusted you.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You weren’t there.””

I looked back at the letter.

The next line made my stomach drop.

“Daniel, I also found out Vanessa has been lying about something important.””

I read faster.

“She told me she lost her own child years ago.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She went completely still.

The letter continued.

“But the truth is…”

The sentence ended.

The page was torn.

Again.

I looked at the missing piece.

Someone had removed every part that mattered.

Every answer.

Every explanation.

Vanessa suddenly grabbed the letter from my hand.

I reacted immediately.

“Give it back.””

She held it tightly.

“You don’t know what you’re reading.””

“I know enough.””

“No, you don’t!””

Her voice echoed through the nursery.

For a moment, she looked like she had forgotten to pretend.

Then she whispered:

“Rachel promised she would never tell you.””

“Tell me what?””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

And then she said the words I never expected.

“She found out Emma wasn’t safe with me.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Like she realized she had said too much.

I stepped closer.

“What did you just say?””

She looked at me.

And before she could answer, a voice came from behind us.

“Dad.””

We turned.

Tyler stood in the hallway.

His face was pale.

“I know why Mom hid that room.””

Vanessa’s eyes widened.

“Tyler, don’t.””

But he kept going.

“Because I saw what she put in there.””

I stared at him.

“What did she put in there?””

Tyler swallowed.

“A box.””

“What kind of box?””

May you like

His voice dropped.

“The one with Emma’s name on it.””
