Chapter 7: The Woman in the Photograph

I stared at the photo until the screen blurred.

Vanessa.

Rachel.

A baby.

Three people connected by a past I didn’t know existed.

My thumb hovered over the message.

“Ask Vanessa what she did to my sister.””

I read it again.

And again.

Because my mind refused to accept it.

“What did you do?””

The words came out before I realized I had spoken.

Vanessa stood frozen at the end of the hallway.

Her eyes weren’t on me.

They were on my phone.

“You weren’t supposed to see that.””

That sentence was worse than any confession.

I lowered the phone.

“Who sent this?””

She didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

Her face tightened.

“Daniel, listen to me.””

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

But firm.

“You’ve been saying that for years. Listen to me. Trust me. Don’t ask questions.””

I stepped closer.

“But every time I did, my daughter paid the price.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I never wanted to hurt Emma.””

I looked at her.

“Then why did you?””

She looked down.

And for once, she didn’t have an excuse.

The silence was enough.

I walked downstairs.

I needed answers before I did something I would regret.

Tyler followed me.

“Dad?””

I turned around.

“Stay with Emma.””

He nodded.

“I will.””

That small promise from an eleven-year-old broke my heart.

A child shouldn’t have to protect another child.

I stepped outside and called the number that sent the photo.

It rang twice.

Then someone answered.

“Daniel?””

The voice was a woman’s.

Older.

Tired.

“Who are you?””

A pause.

“My name is Sarah.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“How do you know Vanessa?””

Another pause.

“She ruined my family.””

The words landed heavily.

“What does that mean?””

Sarah exhaled.

“You deserve the truth. But you need to understand something first.””

“What?””

“Vanessa was not always Vanessa.””

I frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

“She changed her name.””

The world seemed to tilt.

“Why?””

“Because of what happened years ago.””

I looked back at the house.

At the woman standing behind the window.

“What happened?””

Sarah’s voice became quieter.

“My sister was named Rachel.””

My stomach dropped.

“No.””

“Yes.””

I felt the air leave my lungs.

“That’s impossible.””

“Your Rachel wasn’t the only Rachel in this story.””

I closed my eyes.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying Vanessa had a sister.””

I looked through the window again.

Vanessa was no longer watching me.

She was crying.

“She told everyone her sister died,” Sarah continued.

I swallowed.

“But she didn’t.””

“No.””

A chill ran through me.

“Then where is she?””

Sarah didn’t answer immediately.

Finally, she said:

“She’s been missing for fifteen years.””

I couldn’t speak.

“Daniel, I know this sounds impossible.””

“It does.””

“But Rachel found out.””

My heart raced.

“Found out what?””

“That Vanessa wasn’t who she claimed to be.””

I looked down at the photo again.

The baby.

Rachel holding her.

“Why was Rachel with Vanessa?””

“Because Rachel tried to help her.””

“How?””

Sarah sighed.

“Vanessa had a daughter.””

I froze.

“What?””

“A baby girl.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because Vanessa told me she couldn’t have children.””

Sarah went silent.

Then she said:

“She told everyone that.””

I looked toward the house.

Emma was inside.

My daughter.

My little girl.

The same child Vanessa had punished for wanting food.

“What happened to the baby?””

Sarah’s voice cracked.

“That’s the question Rachel was trying to answer.””

The call went silent.

Then Sarah added:

“Daniel, you need to find Rachel’s complete journal.””

“I found parts.””

“No.””

Her voice became urgent.

“You found what Vanessa wanted you to find.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“The missing pages aren’t missing.””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“Vanessa didn’t tear them out.””

“Then who did?””

Sarah whispered:

“Rachel.””

I froze.

“Why would she tear out her own pages?””

“Because she knew Vanessa would search for the journal.””

The wind moved through the trees outside.

I felt suddenly cold.

“Where are the pages?””

Sarah answered:

“She hid them with the one person Vanessa never suspected.””

“Who?””

A long pause.

Then:

“Your daughter.””

My blood ran cold.

I looked back at the house.

At Emma’s bedroom window.

“What are you saying?””

Sarah’s voice trembled.

“Daniel, Rachel left the final evidence with Emma before she died.””

“That doesn’t make sense. Emma was a baby.””

“I know.””

My heart pounded.

“Then how?””

Sarah whispered:

“Because Rachel knew Vanessa would wait until Emma was old enough to become afraid.””

The call ended.

I stood there staring at my phone.

Then I heard a scream from inside the house.

May you like

Emma.

I ran.
