Chapter 6: The Box With Emma’s Name

Nobody moved.

Not me.

Not Vanessa.

Not Tyler.

The only sound in the room was the old ceiling fan turning slowly above us.

I looked at Tyler.

“What box?””

He looked terrified.

“The wooden one.””

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“That’s enough.””

Tyler backed away.

“No.””

The word surprised all of us.

Because Tyler had always been afraid of her.

But this time, he stood his ground.

“No more.””

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””

“Yes, I do.””

His voice shook.

“I should have told Dad years ago.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Tyler.””

He looked at me.

“I found it when Mom told me to clean this room.””

“When?””

“Last year.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“You had him clean this room?””

She didn’t answer.

Tyler continued.

“There was a box behind the closet wall.””

I looked toward the closet.

“The wall?””

He nodded.

“She told me never to touch it.””

Vanessa stepped toward him.

“Because it was private.””

Tyler looked at her.

“Then why did it have Emma’s name on it?””

Silence.

I walked to the closet.

I pushed aside the hanging clothes.

Behind them was an old wooden panel.

I pressed against it.

Nothing happened.

Tyler walked over.

“Here.””

He pointed to a small crack.

I pulled.

The panel opened.

Behind it was an empty space.

But the box was gone.

My heart sank.

Vanessa had already moved it.

I turned around.

“You knew.””

She didn’t respond.

“You knew it was here.””

She looked away.

“I was protecting this family.””

I laughed bitterly.

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You were protecting yourself.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You have no idea what I sacrificed.””

“What did you sacrifice?””

She looked at me.

“Everything.””

“Then explain.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was when Tyler spoke again.

“It wasn’t just the box.””

I looked at him.

“What else?””

He hesitated.

Then reached into his pocket.

He pulled out his phone.

“I recorded something.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“Tyler.””

He pressed play.

At first, there was only silence.

Then Vanessa’s voice.

“You need to stop crying before Dad gets home.””

Emma’s voice followed.

“I’m hungry.””

“You already ate.””

“No, I didn’t.””

“You had your chance.””

The recording stopped.

I felt like someone had punched me.

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked away.

“That doesn’t prove anything.””

“It proves enough.””

“No, it doesn’t.””

She stepped closer.

“She was acting out.””

“She was five.””

“She needed discipline.””

I shook my head.

“No child deserves that.””

For the first time, Vanessa looked truly desperate.

“Daniel, you don’t understand.””

“Then make me understand.””

She sat down on the edge of Emma’s old crib.

Her voice became quieter.

“When I married you, I thought we could start over.””

I didn’t answer.

“I loved you.””

I stared at her.

“Did you love Emma?””

Her silence hurt more than any answer.

I walked out of the nursery.

I needed air.

I needed to think.

But before I reached the stairs, my phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

There was a photo attached.

A photo of Vanessa holding a baby.

Not Emma.

Another baby.

Underneath was a message.

“Daniel, you deserve to know what happened before you met Vanessa.””

I stared at the image.

Then another message appeared.

“You have been raising a child beside the person who destroyed her first family.””

My hands went cold.

Because the baby in the photo wasn’t just any baby.

It was Vanessa.

And the person holding her was Rachel.

I looked back toward the nursery.

Vanessa was standing there.

Watching me.

She knew.

She knew I had seen it.

Then my phone received one final message.

A name.

A name I hadn’t heard in years.

May you like

The sender wrote:

“Ask Vanessa what she did to my sister.””
