Chapter 10: The Truth Hidden in the Attic
I ran.
I didn’t think.
I didn’t ask questions.
I just ran toward the backyard.
“Emma!””
My voice cracked through the night air.
The porch light flickered above me.
The yard was empty.
The swing moved slightly in the wind.
But Emma was nowhere.
My heart felt like it stopped beating.
“Daniel!””
Tyler came running behind me.
“She’s not outside?””
I turned.
“No.””
Mark stepped onto the porch.
His face was pale.
“Vanessa took her.””
I looked at him.
“How do you know?””
“Because that’s what she did before.””
The words made my blood run cold.
“Before?””
Mark looked away.
“I spent years searching for my daughter.””
I grabbed his jacket.
“What does that mean?””
“It means Vanessa knows how to disappear.””
A sound came from inside the house.
A small cry.
Not from outside.
Inside.
I ran back through the kitchen.
The house was dark.
“Emma?””
A tiny voice answered.
“Daddy?””
I followed the sound upstairs.
And then I saw her.
Emma was standing beside the nursery door.
Alone.
Crying.
I dropped to my knees.
“Emma!””
She ran into my arms.
I held her so tightly she complained.
“Daddy, too tight.””
I pulled back immediately.
“Sorry, sweetheart.””
She wiped her eyes.
“Mom took me upstairs.””
“Why?””
“She said she needed to show me something.””
My stomach tightened.
“What did she show you?””
Emma looked toward the nursery.
“She said Mommy Rachel left something for me.””
I froze.
“What?””
Emma nodded.
“She said I was old enough now.””
I looked at Tyler.
Then Mark.
Nobody spoke.
I held Emma’s hand.
“Show me.””
She walked into the nursery.
Straight toward the old crib.
Then she pointed underneath.
“There.””
I crouched down.
Under the crib was a small wooden box.
Not the one Vanessa had hidden.
A different one.
Smaller.
Older.
My hands shook as I pulled it out.
On the lid was a name.
Emma.
Inside was a stuffed rabbit.
The same rabbit Emma carried everywhere.
Except this one was different.
This one had a zipper on the back.
I opened it.
Inside was a folded piece of paper.
Rachel’s handwriting.
My heart broke before I even read it.
“Emma,
If Daddy finds this, it means he finally knows the truth.””
I covered my mouth.
The letter continued.
“I wanted to protect you, but I ran out of time.””
I looked at Emma.
She was watching me.
“She wrote to me?””
I nodded.
“Yes, sweetheart.””
The next line made me stop.
“Vanessa believes you are connected to Ava. She believes you hold the answer to what happened fifteen years ago.””
I looked at Mark.
He went completely still.
Rachel knew.
She knew everything.
The letter continued.
“Daniel, you must understand something. Vanessa did not come into our lives by accident.””
My breathing became shallow.
“She chose our family.””
I looked toward the hallway.
Because suddenly every memory felt different.
Every smile.
Every hug.
Every moment Vanessa acted like she was saving us.
What if she had been planning something all along?
The final paragraph was underlined.
“Do not let Vanessa tell Emma that she is unwanted. That is the lie she has been trying to make everyone believe.””
My hands shook.
Then I read the final sentence.
“The truth about Ava is not in the past. It is living with us.””
I looked up.
“What does that mean?””
Mark stepped closer.
“Daniel…”
His voice was quiet.
“Ava might not be gone.””
The room went silent.
Before I could respond, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
Vanessa.
Her breathing was uneven.
“Daniel.””
I stood immediately.
“Where is my daughter?””
A pause.
“She’s safe.””
“Bring her home.””
“I can’t.””
My fists tightened.
“You kidnapped my child.””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“I saved her.””
“From what?””
Silence.
Then:
“From you finding out too late.””
I felt anger rise.
“You have one chance.””
“Daniel…”
“What?””
Her voice became a whisper.
“I didn’t hurt Emma because I hated her.””
I looked at the little girl standing beside me.
“Then why?””
Vanessa answered:
“Because every time I looked at her, I saw the daughter I lost.””
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Then another message appeared.
A location.
May you like
And one sentence.
“Come alone if you want the full truth.””
