Chapter 3: The Message From the Past

I didn’t sleep that night.

Not because of anger.

Because I was scared.

There was a difference.

Anger makes you want answers.

Fear makes you question everything you thought you knew.

I sat in the living room until sunrise, staring at the message on Vanessa’s phone.

My first wife, Rachel, had been gone for five years.

Cancer took her three months after Emma was born.

I remembered the hospital room.

The machines.

Her hand squeezing mine.

Her final words.

“Protect our daughter.””

I had promised her.

And now I wondered how long I had failed.

At 6:30 in the morning, Vanessa came downstairs.

She looked tired.

But not sorry.

“You went through my phone?””

I looked up.

“You received a message from Rachel.””

Her face froze.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

“How?””

“Explain.””

She sat down slowly.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

My voice was calm.

Too calm.

“Tell me why my dead wife’s name is on your phone.””

Vanessa looked toward the window.

“She left me messages.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“Before she died.””

The room felt colder.

“Rachel knew she was getting worse. She asked me to help.””

“Help with what?””

“With Emma.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“She was afraid.””

My heart stopped.

“Afraid of what?””

Vanessa’s voice softened.

“She knew you loved Emma, but she also knew you worked all the time. She worried you wouldn’t notice things.””

I stood up.

“You’re lying.””

“I’m not.””

“Then why did you hide this from me?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Because Rachel asked me not to tell you.””

That was impossible.

Rachel would have told me.

She told me everything.

I grabbed my jacket.

“I’m calling Rachel’s sister.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“Why?””

“Because I want the truth.””

I left before she could answer.

Rachel’s sister, Claire, answered after three rings.

“Daniel?””

Her voice sounded surprised.

“Claire, I need to ask you something.””

A pause.

“What happened?””

“Did Rachel ever ask Vanessa to help raise Emma?””

The silence on the other end was immediate.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

“Daniel…”

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

“I thought you knew.””

The room seemed to spin.

“Knew what?””

Claire took a breath.

“Rachel didn’t trust Vanessa.””

I gripped the phone.

“What are you talking about?””

“She told me Vanessa was pretending to help, but she noticed things.””

“What things?””

Claire lowered her voice.

“Daniel, Rachel kept a journal during her last months.””

My heartbeat increased.

“A journal?””

“Yes.””

“Where is it?””

“I gave it to you.””

I frowned.

“No, you didn’t.””

“Yes, I did.””

A horrible feeling crawled up my spine.

“Claire…”

“She said if anything happened, you needed to read it.””

I looked around my house.

My hands started shaking.

“I never got it.””

There was a long pause.

Then Claire said something that made my blood freeze.

“Daniel… Rachel gave it to Vanessa.””

I ended the call.

I don’t remember driving home.

I only remember opening the front door.

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

I walked upstairs.

Vanessa wasn’t there.

Neither was the notebook Tyler had shown me.

I searched the bedroom.

The closet.

The drawers.

Nothing.

Then I saw the small wooden box on the top shelf.

The one Vanessa always kept locked.

I pulled it down.

Inside were old photographs.

Jewelry.

And a yellow envelope.

My name was written across the front.

In Rachel’s handwriting.

My hands trembled as I opened it.

The first line said:

“Daniel, if you are reading this, something happened that made you finally look closer.””

I kept reading.

And then I reached the sentence that made my entire body go cold.

“Please don’t let Vanessa raise Emma alone. I saw what she was doing when you weren’t home…”

I heard the front door open downstairs.

Vanessa’s voice echoed through the house.

“Daniel?””

I quickly folded the letter.

Because the next line wasn’t finished.

Rachel had written:

“The reason Vanessa wants custody of Emma is because she knows that I left proof of…”

I looked down.

The sentence ended there.

The rest of the page had been torn away.

And Vanessa was walking up the stairs.
