Chapter 9: The Night Emma Was Born
The room felt smaller.
Like the walls were closing around us.
Emma sat down slowly.
“What happened the night I was born?””
Sarah looked like she had been carrying that question for years.
Maybe she had.
“I made a mistake.””
Emma shook her head.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
Her voice trembled.
“But mistakes don’t destroy fourteen years.””
Sarah looked down.
“You’re right.””
That was the first time I heard her admit it.
No excuses.
No defense.
Just guilt.
I stood near the window, listening.
Because this was no longer just about me.
This was about Emma.
Her life.
Her story.
Sarah took a deep breath.
“When you were born, Jason and I were already having problems.””
Emma nodded.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
Sarah wiped her eyes.
“You don’t know how bad it was.””
She looked at me.
“And you don’t know either.””
I stayed silent.
Sarah continued.
“I was afraid Jason would leave.””
Jason laughed quietly.
“You knew I was already trying to fix things.””
Sarah nodded.
“I know.””
“Then why?””
Her voice broke.
“Because I met someone else.””
The silence was immediate.
Emma looked confused.
“What?””
Sarah closed her eyes.
“For a short time.””
I felt like I couldn’t hear properly.
“Someone else?””
She nodded.
“It happened before Emma was born.””
Jason looked away.
“I knew.””
Emma looked at him.
“You knew?””
Jason nodded.
“That’s why I was so angry.””
Sarah cried.
“I thought I had ruined everything.””
I looked at her.
“Who was he?””
Sarah didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
Because Jason did.
“Your father knows him.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What?””
Jason looked at me.
“You worked with him.””
My mind raced.
Then a name came to me.
A name I hadn’t heard in years.
“Michael?””
Sarah looked down.
And that was enough.
My knees almost weakened.
Michael was my old business partner.
The man who left town after our company collapsed.
The man who Sarah always said she barely knew.
Emma looked between us.
“Are you saying…”
Sarah whispered:
“Michael might be your biological father.””
Nobody spoke.
The words hung there.
Heavy.
Impossible.
Emma looked at me.
I saw fear in her eyes.
Not fear of losing me.
Fear of losing herself.
I walked toward her.
“Emma.””
She stepped back slightly.
That hurt more than I expected.
Not because she rejected me.
Because I understood why.
Her whole identity had been shaken.
“I need time.””
I nodded.
“You can have it.””
She looked at me.
“Even after everything?””
I forced myself to smile.
“Especially after everything.””
That night, I sat alone in the living room.
The house felt different.
Every picture on the wall.
Every memory.
Everything seemed to carry a question.
Around midnight, someone knocked on the door.
I opened it.
Emma stood there.
Her eyes were red.
“Dad?””
I froze.
She had called me that again.
“What happened?””
She held a small envelope.
“I found this in Mom’s old things.””
My heart tightened.
“What is it?””
She handed it to me.
“It’s from Michael.””
I opened it.
Inside was a single page.
Only one sentence was written.
*I know Emma is my daughter, and I know exactly what you did to keep me silent.*
I looked up at Emma.
And before I could say anything…
My phone rang.
May you like
The caller ID showed a name I hadn’t seen in fourteen years.
Michael.
