Chapter 11: The Missing Years

The message stayed on my screen for several minutes.

I read it again.

Then again.

Emma noticed.

“What is it?””

I locked my phone.

“Nothing.””

She gave me a look.

After everything we had been through, she knew when I was hiding something.

“Dad.””

I sighed.

“I got a message.””

“From who?””

“I don’t know.””

She reached for my phone.

I handed it to her.

She read it.

Her expression changed.

“Do you think it’s true?””

I looked toward the street.

“I don’t know what to think anymore.””

The next morning, I called Michael.

He answered immediately.

“Daniel.””

“We need to talk.””

A pause.

“About what?””

“The week Emma was born.””

Silence.

That silence told me everything.

“You left town.””

Michael exhaled.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He didn’t answer.

“Michael.””

Finally, he said:

“Because Sarah told me to.””

I closed my eyes.

“Why?””

“Because she found out I knew.””

“Knew what?””

“That you were planning to adopt Emma.””

I froze.

“I never told anyone that.””

Michael was quiet.

“Yes, you did.””

“No.””

I thought back.

The conversations.

The nights Sarah and I discussed our future.

The times I told her I didn’t care if Emma shared my blood.

I loved her.

That was enough.

Michael continued.

“You told Sarah you wanted to legally become Emma’s father.””

My voice lowered.

“And?””

“She panicked.””

I sat down.

“Why?””

“Because if you adopted Emma, she knew the truth would become harder to hide.””

The anger came back.

Not explosive.

Cold.

Deep.

“So she asked you to leave.””

“Yes.””

“And you listened?””

Michael didn’t defend himself.

“I was weak.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying they were scared.””

“I know.””

“No.””

I looked out the window.

“You don’t know what it feels like to raise someone for twelve years and then find out everyone around you made decisions about your life without you.””

Michael was silent.

Then he said:

“You’re right.””

That answer surprised me.

Because I expected another excuse.

Not accountability.

“I’m sorry, Daniel.””

I rubbed my face.

“Did Sarah ever plan to tell me?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

Another pause.

“After the adoption.””

I felt sick.

“She was going to let me adopt a child while hiding that she might not be mine?””

“Yes.””

I hung up.

I didn’t yell.

I didn’t throw anything.

I just sat there.

Because sometimes betrayal is too heavy for anger.

That afternoon, Emma found Sarah at her house.

I didn’t go.

It was something they needed to do without me.

But Emma called me afterward.

Her voice sounded different.

“What happened?””

“She admitted it.””

I closed my eyes.

“Everything?””

“Almost.””

“Almost?””

Emma was quiet.

“She said there’s one thing she still hasn’t told us.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

“She said Jason knows.””

“Knows what?””

Emma took a breath.

“The reason she paid him.””

I stood.

“What reason?””

“She said Jason agreed to disappear because he was protecting someone.””

“Who?””

Emma whispered:

“You.””

I froze.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

I couldn’t speak.

After all the lies.

After all the secrets.

Now I was somehow at the center of it.

“Emma, that doesn’t make sense.””

“I know.””

“Did Jason explain?””

“No.””

“Where is he?””

Another pause.

“He wants to meet tonight.””

My chest tightened.

“Emma, be careful.””

“I will.””

Then she said something that scared me.

“Dad?””

“Yeah?””

“If what Jason says is true…”

She stopped.

“What?””

May you like

Her voice became quiet.

“You might not be the person you think you are.””
