Chapter 5: The Day Everything Changed
I didn’t sleep.
The photo stayed on my phone all night.
I zoomed in until the image became blurry.
It showed Jason standing outside a hotel.
Sarah was there too.
But there was something else.
A third person.
A man I didn’t recognize.
The timestamp was the same day Jason left.
The day Sarah always told me was the day he abandoned Emma.
At six in the morning, I found Sarah in the kitchen.
She knew immediately why I was there.
“You saw it.””
I placed my phone on the table.
“Who is he?””
Sarah looked at the photo.
Her face went pale.
“Where did you get this?””
“Answer me.””
She sat down slowly.
“That was fourteen years ago.””
“I know.””
She looked at me.
“You don’t understand.””
I laughed quietly.
“That seems to be the sentence everyone uses when they don’t want to tell me the truth.””
Sarah looked toward the hallway.
“Emma can’t know everything at once.””
I froze.
“Everything?””
My voice dropped.
“What else is there?””
Sarah covered her face.
“I made mistakes.””
I stared at her.
“Sarah.””
She finally looked up.
“Jason didn’t just leave.””
The room became silent.
“What does that mean?””
“He was going to take Emma.””
My heart tightened.
“What?””
“He told me he wanted full custody.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
She nodded.
“He said he was her father and had rights.””
I looked at the photo again.
“Who is the man with him?””
Sarah hesitated.
“My lawyer.””
I stared.
“Your lawyer?””
She nodded.
“I was terrified.””
The anger inside me grew.
“Terrified enough to lie to your daughter for fourteen years?””
Sarah started crying.
“I thought I was protecting her.””
“No.””
I pushed the phone toward her.
“You made her hate a man without giving her the truth.””
Sarah looked down.
“And I hurt you too.””
That was the first honest thing she had said.
Before I could respond, the hallway creaked.
We both turned.
Emma was standing there.
She had heard everything.
Her face was empty.
“How long?””
Sarah stood.
“Emma—”
“How long did you know?””
Sarah opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Emma laughed softly.
A broken sound.
“Wow.””
She looked at me.
“And you?””
I felt my chest tighten.
“I didn’t know.””
She searched my face.
“You swear?””
I nodded.
“I swear.””
For a moment, she believed me.
I saw it.
Then she looked at Sarah.
“Why?””
Sarah cried.
“Because I was scared.””
Emma shook her head.
“No. You were scared of losing control.””
She grabbed her jacket.
“Where are you going?””
“To talk to Jason.””
I stepped forward.
“Emma—”
She stopped.
“I need answers.””
I wanted to tell her to be careful.
I wanted to tell her that answers don’t always heal wounds.
Sometimes they create new ones.
But I let her go.
Because for the first time, I realized something.
I couldn’t protect her from the truth.
Not anymore.
Three hours later, Emma called me.
I answered immediately.
“Emma?””
Her voice was quiet.
“Dad…”
I closed my eyes.
She had called me Dad.
Not because she needed something.
Not because she was angry.
Just Dad.
“What happened?””
There was a pause.
Then she whispered:
“I found out why Jason left.””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“What did he say?””
Another pause.
Then Emma said:
“He didn’t leave me.””
I felt cold.
“What?””
“He said you and Mom made a deal.””
My heart stopped.
“A deal?””
Emma’s voice trembled.
“Dad…”
May you like
“What?””
“He said you paid him to disappear.””
