Chapter 3: The Truth Behind The Tuition Account
I spent that night staring at the ceiling.
Sleep never came.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Emma standing beside Jason.
Every time I opened them, I saw the document.
The agreement.
The signature.
The request to remove me.
At seven in the morning, I was already sitting in my car outside the university financial office.
I needed answers.
Not excuses.
A woman behind the counter looked through my account information.
“Mr. Carter, you are listed as the primary payment source.””
“Yes.””
She clicked through several screens.
“But there was a request submitted to update the account.””
“Who submitted it?””
She paused.
“I’m not sure I’m allowed to discuss that.””
I placed the document on the counter.
“This is my account.””
She looked at the page.
Then her expression changed.
“I can tell you that the request was approved temporarily.””
“Approved for what?””
“To transfer responsibility.””
My stomach dropped.
“Transfer responsibility to who?””
She looked at the screen.
“Jason Miller.””
For a moment, I couldn’t speak.
The man who disappeared had somehow walked back into Emma’s life and stepped into the place I built.
I drove home feeling numb.
When I opened the front door, Sarah was in the living room.
She looked like she had been waiting.
“You went to the university.””
It wasn’t a question.
I put my keys down.
“You were going to let him take over everything.””
Sarah shook her head.
“No.””
“That’s exactly what you did.””
“No, I was trying to make Emma happy.””
I stared at her.
“At my expense?””
She looked down.
“You don’t understand what happened.””
“Then tell me.””
Sarah sat on the couch.
Her hands were trembling.
“Emma believes you kept Jason away.””
The room went silent.
“What?””
“She thinks you didn’t want him around.””
I laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was impossible.
“I spent years asking him to call her.””
Sarah looked at me.
“You did?””
“Yes.””
I walked to the cabinet and pulled out an old folder.
Inside were printed emails.
Messages.
Letters.
Everything I had sent Jason over the years.
“I begged him to be involved.””
Sarah stared at the papers.
“I didn’t know.””
“No.””
My voice became quieter.
“That’s the problem.””
I looked at her.
“Neither did Emma.””
The next day, I went to see Jason.
I found him outside a coffee shop near campus.
He looked surprised when he saw me.
“Well, this is unexpected.””
I stopped in front of him.
“Why did you sign that agreement?””
He sighed.
“So you found out.””
“Answer me.””
Jason took a sip of his coffee.
“Emma deserves to know her biological father.””
“She deserves the truth.””
He looked at me.
“I am the truth.””
My hands curled into fists.
“No. You’re a part of it.””
Jason stepped closer.
“You had your time.””
Those words cut deeper than I expected.
“My time?””
He nodded.
“You raised her. I’ll give you that.””
The way he said it sounded like he was giving me permission to be proud.
“But now she knows who she really belongs with.””
I stared at him.
“Did you tell her I kept you away?””
He didn’t answer.
That was an answer.
Before I could say anything else, Emma’s voice came from behind me.
“Dad?””
I turned.
She was standing there.
She had heard everything.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then she looked at Jason.
“Is that true?””
Jason’s face changed.
“Emma—”
“No.””
Her voice shook.
“Did he really stop you from seeing me?””
Jason opened his mouth.
But no words came out.
I watched my daughter look between us.
And for the first time, I saw doubt on her face.
Then Jason reached into his jacket.
He pulled out an envelope.
“I was going to show you this when the time was right.””
Emma looked at it.
“What is it?””
Jason handed it to her.
“It’s proof.””
She opened the envelope.
Her eyes moved across the page.
Then her face slowly changed.
Because whatever was written there wasn’t just about me.
It was about the night Jason left.

And according to that document…
Sarah had been hiding something too.
