Chapter 13: The Evidence She Buried
I stared at the documents in my hands.
The world around me continued moving.
Cars passed on the road behind us.
People walked along the river path.
A dog barked somewhere in the distance.
But I heard none of it.
Because the only thing I could see was Sarah’s name.
On the bank records.
On the transfers.
On the evidence that Jason had hidden for fourteen years.
Emma stood beside me, reading over my shoulder.
Her face slowly changed.
“Mom did this?””
Jason looked down.
“I don’t know the whole story.””
Emma looked at him.
“But you know enough.””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
I turned the page.
There were transactions from our company account.
Money moved in small amounts over several months.
Amounts that were easy to miss.
Until they added up.
I remembered that time.
The panic.
The meetings.
The accusations.
The day my business collapsed.
I remembered everyone looking at me differently.
Even Sarah.
Especially Sarah.
“You knew,” I whispered.
Jason looked at me.
“I suspected.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
His eyes dropped.
“Because Sarah threatened to take Emma away.””
I felt anger rising.
“She couldn’t do that.””
Jason laughed quietly.
“You’d be surprised what people can do when they’re afraid.””
Emma looked between us.
“So Mom destroyed your life?””
Jason shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“She made a choice.””
That hurt more.
Because choices were harder to forgive than mistakes.
I spent years believing Sarah was my partner.
The person who stood beside me.
The person who knew me better than anyone.
Now I wondered how many times she had looked me in the eyes while hiding the truth.
My phone rang.
Sarah.
I stared at the screen.
Emma noticed.
“Answer it.””
I did.
“Daniel.””
Her voice was already breaking.
“I know you found out.””
I looked at the river.
“How long?””
Silence.
“How long did you know?””
Sarah exhaled.
“Since the beginning.””
My eyes closed.
“Since the beginning of what?””
“The company.””
Emma covered her mouth.
I felt my chest tighten.
“Why?””
Sarah started crying.
“Because I was desperate.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“I thought I could fix it.””
“How?””
Another silence.
Then she whispered:
“I borrowed money.””
I frowned.
“From who?””
“Investors.””
“That wasn’t illegal.””
“No.””
Her voice shook.
“But when the company started failing, I panicked.””
I looked at the documents.
“And you moved money?””
“Yes.””
The confession was quiet.
Almost impossible to hear.
But it was enough.
Emma turned away.
Sarah continued.
“I planned to put it back.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Before or after everything collapsed?””
“Daniel—”
“No.””
My voice hardened.
“You watched me lose everything.””
“I was scared.””
“There it is again.””
I looked at Emma.
“She was scared.””
Sarah cried.
“I thought I could fix it before you noticed.””
“But you didn’t.””
“No.””
She whispered.
“I couldn’t.””
The call became silent.
Then Sarah said:
“Jason found out.””
I looked at him.
“He did.””
“Yes.””
“And you paid him?””
“I begged him.””
“For what?””
Sarah’s voice cracked.
“To leave before he exposed me.””
Emma stepped closer to the phone.
“Mom.””
Sarah froze.
“You’re there?””
“Yes.””
A long pause.
Then Emma asked:
“Did you ever love Dad?””
The question destroyed everyone.
Sarah cried.
“Yes.””
Emma shook her head.
“Then why?””
Sarah answered softly.
“Because I loved you too.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Emma said:
“You don’t get to hurt people and call it love.””
Sarah had no response.
After the call ended, we stood there quietly.
Then Jason spoke.
“There’s one more thing.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He handed me another envelope.
“This came after I left.””
I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
From Sarah.
But it wasn’t addressed to me.
It was addressed to Michael.
My hands shook as I read the first line.
*If Daniel ever finds out what happened, tell him I tried to protect him.*
I stopped.
Because beneath that sentence was another one.
May you like
A sentence that made my blood run cold.
*Tell him the accident was not an accident.*
