Chapter 12: The Truth About The Night He Left
Jason chose a park near the river.
Somewhere quiet.
Somewhere with enough distance that nobody could interrupt.
When Emma and I arrived, he was already there.
He looked different.
Not confident.
Not like the man from graduation.
Just tired.
“I know why you’re here.””
Emma stepped forward.
“Then tell me.””
Jason nodded.
“I should have told you years ago.””
“Why didn’t you?””
He looked at her.
“Because I thought I was protecting you.””
Emma shook her head.
“Everyone says that.””
“I know.””
Jason looked down.
“But this time, it’s true.””
I crossed my arms.
“Explain.””
Jason took a deep breath.
“The night I left, I didn’t leave because I wanted to.””
Emma stared.
“Then why?””
Jason looked at me.
“Because I found out someone was planning to destroy your life.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Who?””
Jason didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“You.””
The word hit like a punch.
Emma looked confused.
“What does that mean?””
Jason looked at me.
“Daniel, you need to remember something.””
I felt uneasy.
“What?””
“You weren’t just Sarah’s husband.””
The wind moved through the trees.
Jason continued.
“You were my business partner.””
I nodded.
“We know that.””
“No.””
His voice became heavier.
“You were my business partner when the company money disappeared.””
Everything went silent.
Emma looked at me.
I felt the blood drain from my face.
“What are you talking about?””
Jason stared at me.
“The missing funds.””
My heart pounded.
“The company collapsed because of an investigation.””
Jason nodded.
“An investigation into you.””
I stepped back.
“That’s impossible.””
“Is it?””
I looked at Emma.
She looked terrified.
Jason continued.
“I found evidence.””
“What evidence?””
“That someone moved money before the company failed.””
I shook my head.
“I didn’t steal anything.””
“I know.””
Jason’s answer shocked me.
“You know?””
He nodded.
“That’s why I left.””
I stared.
“Explain.””
Jason looked at Emma.
“Sarah wanted me gone because she was afraid the truth would come out.””
My voice dropped.
“What truth?””
Jason reached into his bag.
He pulled out a folder.
“I found the person who actually moved the money.””
He handed it to me.
I opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
A bank record.
And a name.
A name I hadn’t seen in fourteen years.
Sarah.
My hands went cold.
Emma looked at the papers.
“Mom?””
Jason nodded.
“She wasn’t protecting you from me.””
He looked at me.
“She was protecting herself from what she did.””
I stared at the evidence.
Unable to breathe.
Then Jason said the one thing I never expected.
“Daniel, the reason I disappeared…”
May you like
He paused.
“…was because Sarah threatened to blame you for everything.””
