Chapter 6: The Man Who Was Paid To Leave

For a few seconds, I couldn’t speak.

The words didn’t make sense.

They floated between us like something impossible.

“You think I paid him?””

“No.””

Emma’s voice was shaking.

“I don’t know what to think anymore.””

I sat down at the kitchen table.

The same table where I had signed school forms.

Medical forms.

College forms.

Every document that said I was responsible for Emma.

“Tell me exactly what he said.””

Emma was silent.

Then she began.

“He said after the divorce, you wanted me gone from his life.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“That’s a lie.””

“I know.””

The answer came quickly.

And that surprised me.

She continued.

“He said Mom threatened to take him to court.””

“She did.””

“But he said you offered him money to walk away.””

I looked across the room.

My hands were trembling.

“Emma, I never did that.””

“I believe you.””

Those four words almost broke me.

Because after everything.

After the graduation.

After the pictures.

After watching another man stand where I belonged.

Those four words were the first sign that maybe I hadn’t lost her.

“Where are you?””

“Outside Jason’s apartment.””

I stood immediately.

“Emma, don’t stay there alone.””

“I’m okay.””

“No.””

My voice became softer.

“You don’t have to be okay.””

There was silence.

Then she whispered:

“I’m sorry.””

I closed my eyes.

“Don’t apologize.””

“I was horrible to you.””

I swallowed.

“You were hurt.””

“But I believed him.””

“You believed what you were told.””

Another silence.

Then she said:

“Dad?””

“Yeah?””

“I found something.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

“A bank transfer.””

I stood still.

“What bank transfer?””

“From fourteen years ago.””

My mind raced.

“Where did you find it?””

“In Jason’s old emails.””

I waited.

Then Emma said:

“The money wasn’t from you.””

A strange relief passed through me.

“Then from who?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

And when she did, her voice was barely a whisper.

“Mom.””

I felt the world go quiet.

“What?””

“There was a payment.””

“How much?””

Emma hesitated.

“Fifty thousand dollars.””

I sat back down.

“No.””

“Dad…”

“No.””

Because suddenly, everything changed.

The lies.

The secrets.

The missing years.

Sarah had spent fourteen years telling everyone she was protecting Emma.

But if Emma was right…

Sarah hadn’t just hidden the truth.

She had paid for it.

I stayed on the phone with Emma until she came home.

When she walked through the door, she looked exhausted.

Not angry.

Not cold.

Just tired.

She sat across from me.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she said:

“I don’t know who I’m supposed to trust.””

I looked at the girl who used to run into my arms.

The girl who used to ask me to check under her bed for monsters.

The girl who had become a stranger in one morning.

“You don’t have to choose sides.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“What if I hurt you again?””

I looked at her.

“You’re my daughter.””

She broke down.

And for the first time in months, she let me hug her.

But the moment didn’t last.

Because my phone rang.

Sarah.

I almost ignored it.

Then I answered.

Her voice was trembling.

“Where is Emma?””

I looked at my daughter.

“She’s here.””

A long pause.

Then Sarah whispered:

“I need to tell you both something before Jason does.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

Her voice cracked.

“Jason wasn’t paid to leave.””

I frowned.

“Then what was the money for?””

Silence.

Then Sarah said the words that changed everything.

“He was paid to keep a secret.””

May you like

And before I could ask what secret she meant…

The call ended.
