Chapter 9: The Price They Put on My Daughter

I reached Emily's apartment in twenty-two minutes.

She was standing behind the locked entrance, still holding the folder.

The moment she saw me, she burst into tears.

“Dad!””

I pulled her into my arms.

“It's okay. You're safe.””

She shook her head against my chest.

“I didn't do anything.””

“I know.””

“Why would someone accuse me of fraud?””

“Because someone is trying to scare us.””

I took the folder from her.

Inside were photographs of Emily entering her university, walking across the parking garage, and sitting outside a coffee shop.

There were also copies of her driver's license and the personal information she'd sent Brianna months earlier.

The letter was typed on plain white paper.

Miss Williams, you have been identified as a potential participant in unauthorized company financing. Your cooperation is required to prevent further legal action.

At the bottom was a phone number.

And a handwritten sentence:

*Your father cannot protect you from everything.*

I felt anger rise in my chest.

But I forced myself to remain calm.

“Emily, did you recognize the man?””

She nodded.

“He was wearing a dark blue suit. Maybe forty years old. He said his name was Peter.””

“Did he leave a business card?””

She handed me one.

It read:

*Peter Shaw — Financial Compliance Consultant.*

There was a company logo beneath it.

Richard Lawson Holdings.

I photographed the card.

Then I called Susan.

“Richard has contacted Emily directly.””

Susan's voice hardened.

“Do not call that number. Don't respond to the letter. Preserve everything.””

“Should we report it?””

“Yes. I'll coordinate with the investigators handling the financial fraud complaint.””

Emily sat on the sofa.

“Dad, I need to tell you something.””

I sat beside her.

“What is it?””

She looked down.

“Brianna contacted me last week.””

“What did she say?””

“She asked whether I could help her get some money from your company.””

I closed my eyes.

“What exactly did she ask?””

“She said Mom was planning to move out and needed a deposit. She asked whether I could access the graduation account you set up for me.””

I stared at her.

“Did you give her anything?””

“No. I told her the account was in your name and that I couldn't touch it.””

She hesitated.

“Then she got angry.””

“What did she say?””

Emily looked embarrassed.

“She said I was selfish and that I already had everything.””

I gently took her hand.

“You did nothing wrong.””

Emily looked at the folder.

“Dad, I think Mom wanted me to become part of this.””

I nodded.

“I think so too.””

She leaned against my shoulder.

“Are we going to lose the house?””

“No.””

“The company?””

“No.””

“Are you sure?””

I looked at my daughter.

For eleven years, I'd built my business around one principle: never make promises you couldn't keep.

But this time, I wasn't completely sure what would happen.

So I gave her the truth.

“I can't promise there won't be consequences. But I can promise I won't stop fighting to protect what we've built.””

She hugged me.

And for the first time since the birthday party, I felt certain about something.

Whatever happened to my marriage, I would not let my daughter pay for someone else's greed.

Later that afternoon, Susan called.

“We've made progress.””

“What happened?””

“The lender has placed the $1.8 million application under fraud review. The bank has also frozen the remaining suspicious transfers pending verification.””

I exhaled.

“Good.””

“But there's something else. We traced the consulting payments.””

“To Richard?””

“Yes. And one of the recipient accounts belongs to a company registered under a different name.””

“Whose name?””

Susan paused.

“Daniel Carter.””

I closed my eyes.

“So he was still involved.””

“His account received $65,000. He claims it was a consulting fee, but we need to establish what services he provided.””

I felt the anger returning.

“Can he explain that?””

“He'll have to.””

Then Susan continued.

“Marcus, I also obtained preliminary information from the apartment management company. Richard Lawson isn't the name on his original identification documents.””

I sat upright.

“What?””

“Richard appears to be an alias. The identification number on his lease belongs to a man named Peter Lawson.””

I thought about the business card Emily had shown me.

Peter Shaw.

“Is Peter Shaw the same person?””

“We're checking. But the connection is strong.””

I looked at the photograph on Emily's folder.

The man had been using different names.

Different companies.

Different addresses.

And apparently, he'd been doing this for years.

That evening, I returned home.

Vanessa's car was gone.

So was Brianna's suitcase.

A note sat on the kitchen island.

Marcus, you've destroyed this family. I'm taking Brianna somewhere safe. Don't contact us until you can admit what you've done.

I read it twice.

Then I called Vanessa.

She answered immediately.

“What do you want?””

“Where is Brianna?””

“She's with me.””

“Where?””

“Somewhere you can't interfere.””

“Vanessa, she needs to be safe. Is Richard with you?””

Silence.

Then she replied, “You should worry about yourself.””

“Listen carefully. Richard has used my identity to obtain fraudulent loans. He's also threatened Emily. You need to stay away from him.””

Vanessa laughed.

“You're just trying to turn everyone against him.””

“I'm trying to protect you and Brianna.””

“You had years to protect us, Marcus. Instead, you made us feel like second-class citizens.””

I closed my eyes.

“Where are you?””

She hung up.

I called Brianna.

Straight to voicemail.

Then a message arrived.

It came from an unknown number.

*Stop looking for your wife. She's made her choice.*

A second message followed.

*If you want to see Brianna again, withdraw the fraud complaint and sign the company transfer.*

I stared at the screen.

Then another message arrived.

This one included a photograph.

Brianna was sitting in the passenger seat of the Range Rover.

Vanessa was driving.

And Richard was in the back seat.

Beneath the photograph was a final sentence.

*You have until Friday.*

I immediately called Susan.

She told me not to respond and began coordinating with the appropriate authorities.

But before I could put my phone down, another notification appeared.

It was an email from my company's human resources department.

The subject line read:

*URGENT: Executive Access Revoked.*

I opened it.

The message stated that my company credentials had been temporarily suspended following a request from the board.

I stared at the screen.

I was the founder.

I owned the controlling shares.

There was no legitimate reason to suspend my access.

Then I noticed the attachment.

A board resolution.

It claimed that I had voluntarily stepped down as chief executive officer due to medical concerns.

The resolution was dated that morning.

And beneath the names of the approving directors was a signature I recognized.

My longtime operations director, Linda Parker.

I called her immediately.

She answered in a whisper.

“Marcus, thank God.””

“Linda, what happened?””

“I'm so sorry. They told us you were seriously ill.””

“Who told you?””

“Vanessa. She said your doctor had advised you to step away from the company.””

I gripped the phone.

“Linda, did you sign that resolution?””

She began crying.

“I thought it was legitimate.””

“Listen to me. I never resigned.””

“I know that now.””

“What made you change your mind?””

She hesitated.

Then she said something that made my blood run cold.

“Because Marcus, I just discovered that the board meeting approving your removal was held without you.””

I stared at the email.

“When?””

“Yesterday morning.””

“Who chaired it?””

Linda lowered her voice.

“Richard Lawson.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“How did he get into the boardroom?””

“He presented a document claiming he'd been appointed your temporary legal representative.””

“By whom?””

There was a long silence.

Then Linda answered.

“By you, Marcus. The document has your signature.””

I looked at the screen.

Another attachment had arrived.

It was a power of attorney.

And the witness signature at the bottom belonged to someone I knew.

Someone who had been sitting at my birthday party.

Someone who had watched Vanessa accuse me of treating her daughter unfairly.

My own wife.

But the second witness was even more shocking.

It was Emily's name.

And according to the document, my daughter had personally witnessed me granting Richard control over my entire business.

I immediately called Emily.

“Sweetheart, did you witness any legal documents involving Richard Lawson?””

Her voice trembled.

“No, Dad.””

“Are you absolutely sure?””

“Yes. I've never even met him.””

Then she whispered:

“Dad, there's something I found in the Mercedes.””

“What?””

“A small envelope tucked inside the owner's manual.””

I closed my eyes.

“What's inside?””

Emily took a breath.

“A copy of the original power of attorney.””

Then she said:

“And Dad, there's a handwritten note on the back. It says someone at your company helped them forge my signature.””
