Chapter 5: The Signature That Could Destroy Me
I stared at Daniel.
“What did you just say?””
He glanced toward the staircase.
“Keep your voice down.””
“You walk into my house at midnight, tell me someone is signing my business documents, and then ask me to whisper?””
Daniel rubbed his face.
“Marcus, please. I came here because this is getting out of control.””
“Then start talking.””
He followed me into the kitchen.
I turned on the overhead light.
Daniel looked exhausted. His shirt was wrinkled, his tie hung loosely around his neck, and sweat glistened near his hairline.
For the first time, he didn't look like the confident businessman who had helped me build Williams Commercial Development.
He looked frightened.
“Richard Lawson,” I said.
“Who is he?””
Daniel pulled out a chair.
“He's Vanessa's financial adviser.””
“Since when?””
“About eight months.””
I stared at him.
“Eight months?””
Daniel nodded.
“She said you were having problems at home. She wanted someone to help organize your assets.””
“Why would she need a financial adviser to organize my assets without telling me?””
“I didn't ask enough questions.””
“Clearly.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“Richard has been helping Vanessa prepare a financial separation. But that's not the worst part.””
“What could possibly be worse?””
He opened his briefcase and removed a thick envelope.
Inside were photocopies of company resolutions, banking authorizations, and a document titled Proposed Ownership Restructuring.
I recognized the company logo.
My company.
Williams Commercial Development had started eleven years earlier with one used truck, two employees, and a small office above a hardware store.
I'd worked weekends and holidays to build it.
I'd taken risks that kept me awake at night.
I'd missed family dinners, birthdays, and vacations.
Now someone had prepared documents that appeared to transfer thirty-five percent of my ownership to Vanessa.
I examined the signatures.
They looked convincing.
“Where did these come from?””
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“Richard prepared them.””
“Who signed them?””
“Someone using your electronic authorization.””
I looked up.
“Someone?””
Daniel nodded.
“Your administrative assistant had access to the company's document system.””
“Linda?””
“She was given instructions to upload the documents.””
“Did she know they were fraudulent?””
“I don't think so. She was told they were approved by you.””
I stood up.
“Who authorized that?””
Daniel didn't answer.
I slammed my palm against the counter.
“Who?””
He flinched.
“Vanessa.””
I took a breath and forced myself to sit down.
“What was the plan?””
Daniel opened another document.
“They wanted to transfer part of your ownership before filing for divorce. That way, Vanessa could claim the shares were already legally hers and demand additional compensation during the settlement.””
“That makes no sense. She's not an owner.””
“That's why they needed the documents to appear legitimate.””
I stared at the papers.
Then I noticed something.
A date.
The ownership restructuring was scheduled to take effect the following Friday.
Four days away.
“Why are you giving me this now?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“Because I found out Richard was preparing to use my signature too.””
“What?””
“He wanted me to certify that you had personally approved the restructuring.””
I leaned back.
“So you helped them.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“I thought it was just a family financial arrangement. Vanessa told me you wanted to give her a larger stake in the company. She said you were planning to retire early.””
“And you believed her?””
“She showed me emails.””
“Emails I never sent?””
He nodded.
I stared at my oldest friend.
“Daniel, you've known me for eleven years. You know I would never transfer thirty-five percent of my company without discussing it with you.””
“I know.””
“Then why?””
He looked down.
“Because I was sleeping with her.””
The room seemed to shrink.
I heard the refrigerator humming behind me.
A clock ticking on the wall.
Nothing else.
“How long?””
Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
“Seven months.””
I didn't move.
“Seven months.””
“Marcus—”
“Don't.””
“I know I betrayed you.””
“You didn't just betray me. You came into my home. You ate at my table.
You watched my daughter grow up. You stood beside me at my father's funeral.””
“I know.””
“And all that time, you were sleeping with my wife?””
Daniel covered his face.
I wanted to hit him.
I wanted to throw every document into the fireplace.
Instead, I stood and walked toward the window.
“Get out.””
“Marcus, please. There's something else.””
I turned.
“What now?””
Daniel removed one final sheet from the envelope.
It was a bank authorization form.
My name appeared at the top.
Beneath it were the names of two additional authorized signatories.
Vanessa Williams.
And Richard Lawson.
The account number belonged to the company's operating account.
I stared at the document.
“Did they access company funds?””
Daniel nodded.
“Two transfers were initiated.””
“How much?””
“Forty-eight thousand dollars in total.””
I felt sick.
“Where did the money go?””
“One transfer went to the apartment management company. The other went to a consulting firm owned by Richard.””
I gripped the back of a chair.
“Did the bank approve them?””
“The first one cleared. The second is pending.””
I immediately called Susan.
She answered despite the late hour.
After hearing everything, she instructed me to preserve the documents and contact the bank's fraud department first thing in the morning.
Then Daniel said something that made her stop speaking.
“There's one more thing, Marcus.””
I turned toward him.
“Speak.””
“Brianna has been helping Richard.””
I stared.
“What do you mean?””
Daniel hesitated.
“She photographed some of your personal documents. Your driver's license, tax returns, even the security codes you kept in the office.””
I shook my head.
“No. She's a child.””
“She's seventeen, Marcus. And Richard promised her something.””
“What?””
Daniel looked directly at me.
“A college trust fund worth two hundred thousand dollars. He told her it would be hers once Vanessa got control of your company shares.””
I felt my chest tighten.
Brianna.
The girl whose school tuition I'd paid.
The girl whose first car I'd helped teach her to drive.
The girl I'd defended when people questioned whether I truly loved her.
She had apparently helped strangers steal from me.
Before I could respond, footsteps sounded upstairs.
Vanessa appeared at the top of the staircase.
She was wearing her silk robe.
Her eyes moved from me to Daniel.
Then she noticed the envelope.
Her face changed.
“What is he doing here?””
I held up the ownership documents.
“Apparently, he's explaining why my company is being transferred to you.””
Vanessa descended the stairs slowly.
“Daniel, I told you not to come here.””
Daniel stood.
“Vanessa, this has gone too far.””
She laughed bitterly.
“You're the one who got scared.””
I looked between them.
“Seven months?””
Neither answered.
“Seven months of lying to my face?””
Vanessa folded her arms.
“Don't pretend our marriage was perfect.””
“That doesn't explain the fraud.””
She stepped closer.
“You have more money than you know what to do with, Marcus. You could have made things easier for everyone.””
I stared at her.
“By stealing my company?””
“By sharing what you built!””
“Then why forge my signature?””
Her expression hardened.
“You were never going to give us what we deserved.””
I glanced toward the staircase.
“Did Brianna know?””
Vanessa's face went still.
And from upstairs, a familiar voice answered.
“Yes, Marcus. I knew.””
Brianna stood at the landing.
She was holding a small black folder.
She looked directly at me.
Then she said, “And you should know that the two hundred thousand dollars wasn't the only thing Richard promised me.””
She opened the folder.

Inside was a photograph of Emily.
And beneath it was a document bearing my daughter's name.
