Chapter 7: The Daughter Who Was Told to Betray Me

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

I could hear the doctor breathing through the phone. I could hear the refrigerator humming. I could even hear Brianna quietly crying near the staircase.

But all I could think about were her five words.

“Mom said you'd be better off dead.””

I slowly lowered my phone.

“Brianna, look at me.””

She shook her head.

“Look at me.””

Her eyes finally met mine.

“Did your mother tell you to say those things about me to the hospital?””

Brianna wiped her cheeks.

“She said you were getting worse.””

“Getting worse how?””

“She said you forgot things. That you got angry for no reason. That you were becoming dangerous.””

I stared at her.

“Have I ever threatened you?””

She didn't answer.

“Have I ever hit you?””

“No.””

“Have I ever made you afraid to come home?””

She looked toward Vanessa.

My wife immediately stepped forward.

“Marcus, stop interrogating her!””

I turned toward her.

“You submitted a medical assessment request claiming I'm mentally incompetent?””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“You've been acting irrationally for months.””

“Give me one example.””

“You're obsessed with money. You're suspicious of everyone. You're constantly accusing people of betraying you.””

“Because people are actually stealing from me!””

She rolled her eyes.

“See? This is exactly what I'm talking about.””

I picked up the medical documents.

“Did you forge my medical history?””

“I didn't forge anything.””

“Then why does this paperwork say I've been experiencing memory loss?””

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

Daniel immediately shook his head.

“Don't look at me. I had nothing to do with that.””

She snapped, “You were supposed to handle the financial documents!””

“And I told you I wasn't participating anymore!””

I called the hospital back and asked to speak directly with the medical records department.

The doctor confirmed that an appointment had been requested but that no assessment had taken place.

I instructed them to flag the request for verification.

Then I called Susan.

She listened without interrupting.

When I finished, she said, “Marcus, this changes everything. We need to establish whether your wife intended to use a medical evaluation to gain control of your finances.””

“Can she do that?””

“Not simply because she claims you're confused. But fabricated medical records, forged authorizations, and fraudulent financial documents are serious matters. Don't confront her further without documenting everything.””

I agreed.

Then Susan asked me to photograph the signed statement attributed to Brianna.

I looked at the paper.

Brianna's name appeared beneath a paragraph claiming she'd witnessed several episodes of confusion.

At the bottom was a handwritten signature.

It looked real.

“Brianna,” I said quietly, “did you sign this?””

She began crying harder.

Vanessa moved toward her.

“Don't answer him.””

But Brianna pulled away.

“Yes.””

I felt something break inside me.

“Why?””

“Mom said it was just paperwork.””

“What did she tell you it would accomplish?””

“She said doctors would understand that you needed help managing your money. She said nobody would hurt you.””

I sat down.

“Did she tell you that you might lose your trust fund if you refused?””

Brianna nodded.

“She said Richard had already put two hundred thousand dollars aside for me.””

“And you believed him?””

“He showed me the account.””

I closed my eyes.

For months, Brianna had been hearing promises about a future paid for with my money.

Vanessa had turned a birthday gift into a competition, a marriage into a financial scheme, and a frightened teenager into a witness against the man who had helped raise her.

But I wasn't ready to give up on Brianna.

Not yet.

I looked at her.

“Where is Richard's account?””

“I don't know.””

“Do you have his messages?””

She hesitated.

Then she slowly took out her phone.

“There's a group chat.””

Vanessa lunged forward.

“Give me that!””

Daniel stepped between them.

“Enough, Vanessa!””

Brianna opened the conversation.

The group included three people: Vanessa, Richard, and Brianna.

I read the messages.

Richard had written:

Once the evaluation is completed, Marcus will have difficulty challenging the transfer.

Vanessa replied:

Make sure Brianna understands what to say. She needs to sound convincing.

Then Brianna had sent a question.

What happens if he finds out?

Richard's response was chilling.

By then, he'll have bigger problems.

I scrolled further.

There were screenshots of my driver's license, tax documents, and personal banking information.

Then I found a message sent two days before the birthday party.

Richard had written:

The Mercedes situation is perfect. Keep him emotional and distracted. He'll focus on the girls while we finish the paperwork.

I looked up.

Vanessa's face had lost its color.

“You planned the birthday argument?””

She said nothing.

“Was Brianna instructed to throw the keys?””

Brianna covered her face.

“I didn't want to do it.””

Vanessa shouted, “Stop talking!””

But Brianna continued.

“Mom said if I acted angry enough, you'd feel guilty and give me Emily's car. She said you'd eventually sign whatever she put in front of you because you'd want the family to be happy again.””

I slowly stood.

“So none of this was about the Mercedes.””

Vanessa's voice became icy.

“Don't flatter yourself. You were always going to be difficult.””

At that moment, someone knocked on the front door.

Three firm knocks.

Daniel looked toward the entrance.

“Who is that?””

I checked the security camera.

Two uniformed officers stood on the porch.

I opened the door.

One officer introduced himself as Officer Bennett.

“Mr. Williams, we received a report concerning a possible financial fraud and identity theft situation. We'd like to ask you a few questions.””

Vanessa suddenly began crying again.

“Thank God you're here! My husband has been threatening everyone!””

I stepped aside.

“Officers, I have documents, messages, and financial records I'd like to provide.””

Officer Bennett looked between us.

Then he noticed the folder on the kitchen counter.

“Ma'am, we'd like to hear your account too.””

Vanessa's expression changed.

For the first time that evening, she seemed to understand that the story she'd carefully constructed might not survive contact with the truth.

But as Officer Bennett reached for the documents, Brianna suddenly grabbed my sleeve.

“Marcus,” she whispered, “there's something else you need to know.””

“What?””

She looked toward Vanessa.

“Richard isn't just trying to take your company.””

May you like

Her voice trembled.

“He's planning to make sure you never get the chance to testify against him.””
