Chapter 4: The Man in My Wife's Apartment
I zoomed in on the photograph until the man's face filled my phone screen.
He was probably in his early forties, with dark hair, an expensive watch, and the kind of confident smile worn by someone who believed he had nothing to fear.
Vanessa stood beside him.
Her hand rested against his chest.
Brianna was smiling at the camera, holding the keys to the Range Rover I'd supposedly purchased.
I didn't recognize the man.
But I recognized the necklace Vanessa was wearing.
I'd bought it for our fifth wedding anniversary.
I called the apartment manager immediately.
“This is Marcus Williams. Who is that man?””
The manager, a woman named Patricia, hesitated.
“I'm sorry, Mr. Williams. I shouldn't have sent you that photograph without explaining.””
“Then explain.””
“The gentleman introduced himself as Richard Lawson. He said he was Mrs. Williams's husband.””
I closed my eyes.
“I'm her husband.””
There was an uncomfortable silence.
“That's what I understand now, sir.””
“When was this photograph taken?””
“Yesterday afternoon. Mrs. Williams brought her daughter to collect some belongings.
Mr. Lawson was already staying there.””
“Did they purchase the apartment?””
“No. It's a rental. However, the application lists Mrs.
Williams and Mr. Lawson as a married couple.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“Can you send me a copy of that application?””
“I'm not sure I'm authorized to release tenant information.””
“Then please preserve every document associated with the lease. My attorney will contact you.””
“Of course, Mr. Williams.””
I ended the call.
For several minutes, I sat alone in my office.
My wife had apparently rented an apartment with another man, used my financial information to acquire a luxury vehicle, and prepared divorce documents while pretending our biggest problem was a birthday present.
But one question bothered me more than everything else.
Why was Brianna involved?
She was seventeen.
She was old enough to understand that something wasn't right, but young enough to be manipulated by adults she trusted.
I wanted to believe she was simply caught in the middle.
Then I remembered her question in the kitchen.
Did you tell him about the other car yet?
She knew.
At least some of it.
My phone rang.
Vanessa.
I answered.
“Where are you?”” she demanded.
“At home.””
“Did you go through my office?””
I looked at the folder on my desk.
“Why?””
“Because some documents are missing.””
“Which documents?””
She went quiet.
Then her voice sharpened.
“Marcus, I'm warning you. Don't start interfering with things you don't understand.””
I almost laughed.
“Is Richard Lawson one of those things?””
The silence was immediate.
“Who told you that name?””
“Your apartment manager.””
“You had no right to contact her!””
“Apparently, I had no right to know about your second apartment either.””
Vanessa lowered her voice.
“Listen carefully. Richard is helping me with something. It has nothing to do with you.””
“Then why does the lease list him as your husband?””
“Because the property manager made a mistake.””
“And why is Daniel's name on the Range Rover paperwork?””
“Marcus, you're exhausting.””
She hung up.
Twenty minutes later, Brianna came through the front door alone.
She found me sitting in the living room.
“Where's Mom?”” I asked.
“Shopping.””
“Did she tell you I saw the apartment photograph?””
Brianna froze.
Her handbag slipped slightly down her shoulder.
“What photograph?””
I studied her face.
“Brianna, I'm not going to yell at you. I just want the truth.””
She looked toward the stairs.
“Why are you always trying to make Mom look bad?””
“I'm not. I'm asking you a question.””
She dropped onto the sofa.
“Mom said you were going to start acting crazy when you found out.””
That sentence hit harder than I expected.
“What else did she say?””
Brianna crossed her arms.
“She said you were going to accuse everyone of stealing from you.””
“Did she tell you about the Range Rover?””
“It's my car.””
“No, sweetheart. It was purchased using my identity.””
She rolled her eyes.
“Mom said you'd eventually pay for it anyway.””
I leaned forward.
“Who is Richard?””
Her eyes moved toward the hallway.
“Why?””
“Because he's living with your mother.””
“He's just a friend.””
“Friends don't usually introduce themselves as someone's husband on a rental application.””
Brianna stood abruptly.
“You don't know anything!””
“Then explain it to me.””
She shook her head.
“Mom said not to talk about the apartment.””
“Why?””
“Because you're going to ruin everything!””
She stormed upstairs.
I heard her bedroom door slam.
I remained seated, trying to process what had just happened.
Then I heard another sound.
A phone vibrating.
Brianna had left hers on the coffee table.
The screen lit up.
A message appeared from a contact saved as *R. Lawson*.
Tell your mom Marcus found the lease. We need to move the remaining documents tonight.
Before I could read anything else, the phone disappeared from the table.
Brianna stood in the doorway.
Her face had gone completely white.
“Give me my phone.””
I looked at her.
“Brianna, what remaining documents?””
“NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS!””
She snatched the phone and ran upstairs.
I didn't follow.
Instead, I called Susan.
When I explained what had happened, she became unusually quiet.
“Marcus, there's something I want you to consider. If they are rushing to move documents, they may believe you've already discovered more than you actually have.””
“What should I do?””
“Nothing impulsive. Let me investigate the financial transactions and the ownership documents. And don't sign anything Vanessa puts in front of you.””
I agreed.
Then Susan added one final warning.
“There's another possibility. Someone may be preparing to claim that you knowingly participated in this arrangement.””
I looked toward the staircase.
“What arrangement?””
“I don't know yet. But if Richard Lawson's name appears alongside yours in any financial documents, we need to understand why.””
That night, I waited until the house was quiet.
At 11:46 p.m., a car pulled into the driveway.
I recognized Daniel's black BMW.
He didn't knock.
He walked straight into the house using the spare key Vanessa had given him.
I stepped out of the shadows.
“Looking for something, Daniel?””
He nearly dropped his phone.
Then he looked at me and said something I would never forget.
“Marcus, you need to understand. Richard isn't the man Vanessa is trying to protect.””
May you like
He swallowed.
“It's the person who's been signing your business documents.””
